My Citrus Trees grown from seed are now almost 47 months old and it's time to get you updated on the Lemon and Orange Trees! They were sown from seed on 6/11/17. In this update, I will be repotting the orange trees (as well as the lemon trees - but not shown) into 5 gallon pots up from the 2 gallon pots they are currently in. I am mainly repotting them for a few reasons: 1) They are requiring more frequent waterings due to the pots being too small 2) The root system needs more space to branch out 3) The Texas heat (100 degrees plus) is coming soon and we don't want the pots (or roots) to overheat. Some info for the care of container-grown citrus plants: - Be sure you plants get 8-12 hours of direct sunlight (not blistering sun, but good sun) - Make sure the pot/container is well draining - Be sure to not let the soil dry out. Moist soil is better than not moist. - Supplement 2X per year with a slow release fertilizer (citrus is a heavy feeder) - You can use Neem Oil to treat pests like spider mites, or rubbing alcohol on mealy bugs/worms. - Citrus grown from seed takes 3-5 years minimum to flower, and sometimes it never does. I'm two years into growing 5 citrus trees from seed, at about 2-3 feet high. Growing them indoors in Ireland. :) Thought they were struggling but they seem comparable to yours, it's tough with very little sun though. Will have to make a video soon

Awesome! I have always been curious to try starting citrus from seed, but was always told the fruit would be bad. It is cool to see the whole process and the updates of it all. Many types of Citrus actually come true to type, being clones of the mother tree. The types that don't come true to type will still have 50%-100% of the mother tree's genetics. What is usually lacking when Citrus seedlings don't fruit is proper care. Adequate sunlight, or very good artificial light, unrestricted top branch growth and proper nutrition are required if there's an expectation of flowers and fruit. My trees usually begin flowering at 9-10' of height. Under ideal conditions that height can be attained in 2-3 years on certain cultivars.

Living in Texas as well. I have a Maple and I put a pretty healthy layer of pine bark as a mulch and it helps prevent evaporation. And reduces my watering significantly. I don't know if citrus can have that, but if they can, it would help

I just put our orange tree out for the summer. She will probably need repotting next spring. I'll probably put her on wheels to make it easier to move her in and out of winter quarters.

Hey Rob !First of all, I really admire the effort you put on this plants,and i'm really trying to do the same too! But I also wanted you to know that you could give your plants new name by yourself, because practically you grow a new variety, for example , of apples, peaches etc.

You can grow lemon trees in Pennsylvania. I have them, they make great house plants.

@@joem2745 Are you using a peat based soil? Covering the surface with a thin layer of sand might be worth a try.

Have you ever completely defoliated them? Its really good for them.

hi..any chance you could do honey mandarins? I have a few mandarin saplings which are more than a year old. I am currently working on lemons which are 2 months old and calamondin which are 3 months old. the lemons are more resillient and grow much bigger compared to the calamondin. its satisfying to watch the progress.

any advise on proper re-potting. Thanks

my citrus in pots go kinda dormant in the winter too dropping a bunch of leaves and getting some die back, but they always seem to come back in late winter/early spring. I find you don't want to transplant them then either, they can't use the extra water.

I have a orange tree i bought at Walmart a few months ago she is still in the same pot and I’m thinking I need to repot it In a new bigger Pot- should I do the same with thre banana compost tea for her? And should I just re-pot her in the big pot and then the winter bring her inside because we live in Jersey where it snows

Peaches are a good candidate for "seed to fruit" projects. They have a short juvenile phase and reliably produce edible fruit. The Spanish propagated them by seed for centuries, weeding out many of the bad genetics.

Hey Rob, have you considered grafting budwood from your seedlings onto rootstock? There is a good chance they will flower/fruit faster

I’m at the beginning of the seed grown citrus journey, 4 month old Hamlin sweet orange, 2 month old Tango mandarin and 1 Pixie mandarin seed drying on the counter. 4 - 5 years is a long time to wait and see what I get but fortunately I have many 2 year old grafted citrus trees and 1- 3 year old Clementine with a dozen or so fruit looking great. I’m hoping next year will be the year. I think you should get Lemons next year, oranges…. Anyone’s guess

I have successfully sprouted Tangelo and Eureka lemon and some regular orange from the grocery store. I can’t get Tangelo shipped here in Texas so I’m going to try to grow and graft it. Good luck to you!

Hey, I’m a tad nervous about my lemon tree - I started it from seed in December and it’s looking amazing but all of a sudden the leaves have dropped a lot and all are pointing down…..I only water it when it’s dry say too inch of soil do I need to wait for it to be dryer? I’m 8months into growing it? Any help would be great! Thank you

Dont forget your february fertilization!! Your trees are showing major nutrient imbalance get some extra fertilizer in!!

Maybe it's due to different climate but I have some that are growing from seed since December 2019 and they're already over 5 feet

@@RobBackyardGardenerr Got to be that, plus there's no winter here to slow the growth process.

I have a 11 year old grapefruit tree that I have grown from a store bought grapefruit's seeds. Still no flowers. I tried putting it and other younger citrus trees that I've grown, outside earlier this year (I live in northeast) and they have suffered from the below 50 degree nights. They are still alive, but not happy.

Grapefruit is one of the last types of Citrus to mature and transition into reproductive stage. The highest part of the tree is the first to mature, so pruning the top should be avoided.

@@LandscaperLife I rather doubt you harmed the tree. At about 9-10' of height, training the apical tip to grow horizontally can induce transitioning into reproductive mode.

@@rafaelramos441 well, I've kept this one to about 4 ft. Only because I live in an apartment and I have to carry the tree downstairs every season. I can't handle a 9ft er lol

Why do you use banana peels and coffee grounds? They don’t provide enough nutrients, as it can be seen on these trees. Why not using chicken manure? It’s really cheap and it will provide the required nutrients.

I didn’t want them to go to waste. It’s not the only thing I use but these Citrus Trees def could use some help and chicken manure is not a bad idea for sure!

Those are some tiny trees for 4 years.

DON'T add sand to potting mix!! I did that for my lemon seedling and when I took it out about a year later, the soil had become concrete like. No roots grew in in it. Only the taproot had grown down to the bottom and swireld underneat the pot... Had to remove all the soil, ripping about half the roots off an dput it in some fresh soil. Now we are about a month later and it's still struggling and has only produced one really tiny leave.

Still screaming I see...
