Growing Carrots In Raised Beds And Containers | Secret Soil Mix

Our secret carrot soil mix for planting and growing carrots in raised beds and containers. The problems is, we have no secrets when it comes to gardening. Your success is our success. Today we'll cover our growing medium and the soil additives we use in our raised bed garden. Garden boxes and containers give gardeners more control over the soil and we take advantage of that. We also use pelleted seeds to ensure good seed to soil contact which improves our germination rate. We'll show you how to space your carrots and the correct planting depth. We also want to discuss the positive effects of phosphorus, calcium and magnesium on root crops as well as the down side of nitrogen in the soil.
Items used in this soil mix include: Potting soil, bone meal, Epsom salt, and composted chicken or cow manure.

    I think that folks who have gardened for a while just do things from instinct with good success... The problem may have come in changes in the soil itself... And in that, it is really beneficial to continually be working with that soil... Those are cheaply built 8 year old boxes that probably need rebuilt (or they will soon) but the soil in them is priceless... I think you will find your will richen and mature as well... Good luck ! Please do share your results !

  • @catalystcody4949

    @catalystcody4949

    4 жыл бұрын

    Vermiculite is not quite the same. Yes it makes a soil more airy but at the end of the day it’s a clay, absorbs water while perlite does not( had 50 lb bags of both get rained on, your not moving vermiculite easily) & it will loose texture in the long run. Not what you want if you want soils to dry out between waterings say for cacti.

    @@catalystcody4949 I must say that saying vermiculite being a "clay" is news to me. I am going to look that one up. It is surely NOT a clay product. IF you are correct I will apoligize, BUT, I don't think it is.

    @@Spaughshalfacrehomestead I’m not sure what you mean by super soil mix, but I started with 3.8 cubic foot bag of peat moss and mixed in an equal amount of perlite. I poured all of that into the bottom of a 4x4 foot bed that was 1 foot tall. I then added a 1 inch layer of potting mix on top and planted the seeds into that. I followed all of their soil amendments as mentioned in the video as well. I wasn’t using pellitized seeds but bare seeds and I didn’t have any luck with the newspaper on top but just watered thoroughly every evening. Hope that helps and good luck!

    They were food storage grade 50 gallon drums that we cut in half to make use of the space between the beds... We change up what we grow in them, but my favorite thing to grow in them is the different herbs... They had cucumbers in them earlier this year... The soil needs some work so I may let them stand till fall and work on them when it cools off.... Thanks so much for watching !

  • @BumbleBeeJunction

    I cheap way to start is to fill them to about 6" from the top with straw, and then dump (rinse) peat moss down through it as filler... Then in the last 6 inches, focus more on the amendments in the proportions here... Thanks for watching ! Hope that helps !

    Cardboard (weed suppression).... Hardware cloth (critter suppression)... Straw or Hay (cheap filler)... I think after that, I would load the bed with loose peat moss, and amend it from there... But peat is bulky and will get you filled up to where you can work with it...

    @@BumbleBeeJunction does sand mix work with carrots?

  • @BumbleBeeJunction

    @BumbleBeeJunction

    5 жыл бұрын

    Cherrie... I am not a big fan of sand and carrots, but that is just me... If you've seen our harvest videos, obviously we can grow them without it... Many times, it becomes too dense for the carrots to grow long... If you are adding it to loosen up clay, then I would suggest gypsum instead...

  • @cherriemckinstry131

    @cherriemckinstry131

    @@BumbleBeeJunction Another reason I ask is that peat moss can get very expensive and half a bag goes for what a full bag went for a few years ago. The good thing is that it's acidic and therefore some pests do not like to get neat it. Oak leaves and pine needles are also acidic and cam be gathered locally. I used to live near a peat bog so it was a little more affordable, but still is more money than resourcing pine needles or oak leaves and shred them up.
