A few years back I drove through the apple growing area of Washington state this time of year. At a roadside stand I discovered the Arkansas Black; a hard-to-come-by variety. The pie from those apples was the best I've ever made.

Another winner Mark. I almost spat out my coffee when you took a bite of a cider apple! British cider apples are beyond sour and even the most robust stomach would protest. Golden Delicious apples are the blandest wool textured which once dominated market here to detriment of old school species. A few cloves in a winter apple pie with custard is good fuel to keep you going outdoors.

Wow! I did not know that peach trees grew so large. 😊

Zestar and Chestnut Crab are my best trees here in MN. They grew fast on semi dwarf rootstock and produce every year. And great sweet flavor.

This was fabulous! Learned so much! Have a much better insight & appreciation for orchard growing! My apples taste so much better now! 🍏🍎🍑🍒

Mark good timing for me I have 4 3year old apple trees and I enjoy having trees and always keep a tree but my yard is 3 times bigger as before. Johnathan is our favorite as we love pies and I am from Kentucky and them folks loves fried apples often. Glad this man stopped working and taught me a few things.Seems like farms makes people happy when they are not afraid of work. Thanks Greg for me and yourself

My son loves for us to get together in the Fall, and make a trip to our local orchard. Outside of buying apples, we buy hot apple cider donuts made to order and apple butter. They are SO YUMMY! It’s special and nostalgic for him even though he is grown. ❤️ I hope your friend enjoys his retirement.

Carhartt and Red Cap Both off Amazon. The Red Caps were half the price. I thought I'd try both. The Carhartts are a little better made and will last longer, but twice the price.

Wow who knew the depth of knowledge that is available on growing so many varieties of apples. Great interview so glad you shared this useful information. I was farm-raised, we had truck Gardens with different types of fruit trees in each of the gardens. We also raised Yorkshire pigs and Black Angus and milking jerseys. We also grew hay and corn. We had a Grove of seedless persimmons that made the best persimmon pudding. FYI... growing up on a farm as a young kid I didn't particularly care for The Fall season. Not enough hours in the day to get everything done, glad I had the experience. I sure do enjoy your Channel Mark!

One interview may be a baker at a bakery, the 2nd may be someone who collects classic cars. After getting emailed for the 5th time from people from CA about this guy who has since passed who did a show out there on PBS for 25 years who did exactly that, I decided I'd give it a try after watching several of his shows. Great fruit bearing orchard Mark. Thanks again for all the information about growing them. I was keen to watch as I've just planted a James Grieve apple, originally from 1890 Edinburgh and it's suited to our climate. It's only a baby and has already produced three apples which are a cross between cooking and eating. I covered the tree during the spring to protect it against the frost but I pulled the hessian covers off too early one morning and the sun burn one branch which means it's a little deformed.

Have a need for education to be somewhat academic that's not a bad thing but we discount so much information because of it. It was a huge issue to me when at university doing my bachelor of agriculture science, the lecturers really wanted you to only focus on academic resources not what the old farmer had to say. I'm at home not away till November.

We have lost alot of culture and history and the ability to do things look at Western manufacturing only just alive. As always, great info especially on the difference between root stocks. The first home I bought was in a small village of Apple Creek that celebrates Johnny Appleseed Days every July. Why July? I have no idea since there isn't an apple tree anywhere near that has mature fruit in July.

Amazing video full of so much information... as in I never heard of nematodes before this and had to pause, Google them, read and then go back... this was incredibly educational! My dad and his dad both had fruit trees and they worked hard at winter pruning.. a talent that they both took to their graves with them and had not shared with me. Greg is such a treasure chest of knowledge and I admire when he and his family have done with their Wilson's Farm Market. When I was the food buyer at The World Trade Center I arranged for one of the orchards in New Jersey to bring a bushel of each of their types of apples.. they brought 22. The chefs had a blast using different types of apples for different food items.. btw, duck is incredible with apples.

Hi Mark I ordered a golden delicious and a granny smith last November one came in Dec and the other one in February. I planted them this spring. So far doing great this will be there first real winter I pray they make it.

It always seems to happen that way too! You get busy and forget and it never fails! I hope it recovers for you.

I once read that if you plant an apple seed there is no guarantee it will grow apples of the type on the tree, the apple pip came from, and can be a whole new variety, and the only way to ensure the apples are the same as the parent tree is to graft a tree. Regarding cider, a lot of the founding fathers were from families that originally lived in South West England, to this day, this remains the apple cider orchard area of England and the place with the most cider makers.

Lovely. The nearest geographic location (near me) apples grow naturally is Mount Bromo in Java. Watching this made me want to look for Michael Caine and Tobey Maguire in 'The Cider House Rules'. I guess that says everything about my relationship with apples in orchards if they aren't in the fridge. 🤷🏻‍♂️😂

Honey Crisp was developed here in Minnesota at the university arboretum. We enjoyed them before the world found out about them. Loved the orchard you shared without Holly. She made me say that!

@@marksgardenlife5971 Definitely the best variety I have every tried! They did originate in NZ. They are a newer variety, but we must have a few growing them here by now and those are even bigger. I have found them at Aldi for really good price. WM has them at times also. Think it is a honey crisp cross. I ordered two "low chill requirement" apple trees for my area in SC would love to know a spraying regimen. They will arrive tomorrow with my purple plum pony ornamental trees. After seeing those on dwarf root stock, regretting I did not search for dwarf low chill req apple trees.

I used smith Brothers I have a dwarft and semi dwarft.

I'd rather have more classic varieties available, e.g. Rome, Jonathan, Jonamac, Cortland, Winesap, Acey Mac, Golden Russet, Ida Red, Prairie Spy. There is a sameness to the flavors of the modern apples, I enjoy the complex flavor of a Jonamac, just my favorite eating apple.
