FYI, another gardener says that if you leave the ginger in a large piece you will get more Ginger faster.

just found your video trying to get more information on growing store bought ginger, the ones i got on my kitchen counter got eyes that now got green shoots sprouting and im new to plants. I got a honey mango seedling thats got an almost 5 inch shoot with dark green leaves that are like three inches a pop, and thats my first and fastest growing plant ive grown from seed. Of course after eating the delicious fruit, which is like the best part :). Just got tomato and basil potted plants from friends and also just started germinating sweet cherry seeds which were extracted from their pits. So much going on but loving the process of it. Keep going with the videos

I live in zone 5b as well and I have grown ginger outdoors by piling about 18 inches of leaves over it after it died back in the fall. I did this for several years but lost it one winter after a strong wind storm blew the leaves off during freezing weather.

I just found you today as I was searching to grow ginger in pot inside. I am currently using a spare bedroom from one of my children flying the coop to raise his family, and have converted it into an indoor garden. I have a grow tent, and converted my closet into a grow tent as well. Now setting up the remainder of the room into an organized growing area for chives, garlic, ginger and some herbs. Being physically disabled has limited my access for outside gardening, but I can bring it inside and do it year round!! I can be safe also, as my alert dog will run to my husband if I need him, otherwise he remains in my room doorway until I release him as I'm finished my work.

Hi Cindy, This is amazing! I love your positivity and determination. I’m all about helping people realize you don’t need a lot of space or even outdoor space to grow food! Hi Lushane, I only take what I need and always leave some of the ginger “root” in the pot. That way there is always some left to keep growing. Ginger grows very slowly and I am not using every day so this works for me. Hope that helps

I really appreciate all your videos and especially the one about the Rise Garden! I plan on trying to grow indoor ginger this year. I have always been a devout dirt gardener, but now that we live in the far north I lost my lovely 3 season garden and have had to look at other options. Can you share where and how seeds from other sources can be grown? Also, where do you buy seeds specific to plants suited for hydroponics?

Thanks so much for your kind words! I get most of my seeds from Baker Creek (www.rareseeds.com), Renee's garden (link below) and West Coast Seeds (link below). There are no specific seeds for hydroponics really. I do tend to use dwarf plants especially in systems that don't have a lot of grow height. My first attempt died last year. So I bought some more from the store, (home delivery, I'm very old and can't shop myself) the pathetic dried up stumps you get are disgusting. Then you get a decent piece and it's like Christmas. I got a good piece with what I call nodules. Hurray, it's been in my heated porch in the UK since spring and it's growing. One big 3 foot high shoot and 2 new ones starting and it's August now. I'm hoping to get a tiny harvest in October and just take a little for my use then. Do I leave the rhizome that I don't harvest in the original pot over winter and add some new compost in spring. I use ginger a lot in cooking and I have some Indian friends that would appreciate a ginger present if I'm successful. I'm an experienced gardener, but not on this plant.

Thank you for your clear instructions and advice. Have you grown turmeric? Do I use the same principles to grow turmeric?

I have grown turmeric once and I want to try again. I did do the same thing BUT turmeric is supper slow. So slow I gave up on it and out the pot outside in the summer and forgot about it. Then I saw something pop up a month later!

How do you harvest it? Just break off a piece as you need it?

I love Moscow mules too! If you had to guess, how long would it take for the whole piece you’re holding to double in size? I’m trying to figure out how much space we would need to live off home grown ginger as we use ginger everyday in our tea + cooking.

Ginger grows incredibly slowly. I’m trying it outside for the first time to see if it grows better (assuming it will) then I may transplant it back inside to keep growing as our season is too short. In terms of the time to double, honestly I don’t know. I don’t use ginger daily so I have had enough for when I want it.

I live in Central Oregon and I have an organic garden but the growing season is not terribly long here. I am thinking of growing some ginger on the deck where I grow all my other herbs in the summer and bringing it into the house during the winter. It’s such a great medicine and also just tastes wonderful. Right inside the deck is an area that gets a lot of sun. What do you think? Then there is is tumeric, so I’m going to try that one as well. Thank you for you excellent instructions. 💛🍀🦋🍀💛

Yeah for sure go for it! I am also growing turmeric inside same as my ginger but my growing season is so short! You should get a number crop outside. One thing I will mention is that turmeric takes FOREVER to get growing (or at least it did for me) So long that I forget it was in the pot and went to use it for something else and found a teeny sprout! Keep me posted on how it goes and so glad you found the video helpful. 💕🌱

I grow my own in 7b. I have used pieces from an Oriental store. By the way, one store cuts off all those growing points and I will not return there! Another store had a wonderful young lady who taught me how to grow turmeric from their 'roots' I am in my third year of growing that. Love the two and use them daily!

I want to grab some galangal from the store and start growing that as well. I gave turmeric a go and didn’t have great results but I’m going to give it another try over the winter.

@@The_IndoorGardener start the turmeric early if you can. It needs to have the nubs in order to grow. And not too wet or to dry. It likes the warmth so if you have a great day so much the better! Mine actually bloomed this year. It looks like a canna bloom. Not the real fancy ones. The basic smallish red ones. It was streaked with orange and made the roundest black seeds! I planted those too. And like ginger I grew it in a long shallow tray that is about 5 inches deep. Does galangal taste same as ginger?

@@lpmoron6258 I did grow the turmeric and it had lovely leaves but when I harvested there wasn’t much root development. So probably need to work on amending for that. The galangal is similar to ginger but milder I would say. It is used a lot in Thai food which I LOVE!

@@The_IndoorGardener I have wondered about underground development. The plants are shoulder high. Looks just like a canna. I hear the leaves are used to wrap fish in when cooking. Have yet to try that.

Hi Gloria, I just stick my hand into the dirt and feel around for the size of piece I want then try and snap it off under the dirt. Basically I try to disturb the rest of the ginger as little as possible so it can keep growing. I hope that helps and remember it grows very slowly! If you want “new” or young ginger you can harvest the the leaves are still there. For mature ginger (like you would see in the grocery store) I wait for the leaves to dry up and fall off.

Plants want to grow and ginger is no different. Yeah that should work fine. Ginger prefers to have horizontal space than vertical! Good luck

1. Buy fresh ginger and tumeric since I'm growing both 2.soak them for 24hrs in warm water 3. I read that I need to cut the ends and have them form a callus? Is this true and or needed? 4. Get 2 pots big enough since ginger grows horizontally 3. Get well drained potting soil 4. Place soil in pot put ginger and tumeric eyes side up? Cover with more and water? 5. Since I live in Jersey 6b where should I place the pot indoors and when moving outdoors do I need to do anything specific?

I have soaked and not soaked, both worked. If you are planting the whole piece no need to cut. I would only cut them if I am trying to establish multiple plants. Then yes you should let the end dry out and callus over (same with seed potatoes). If you don't it can rot sometimes, so I always err on the side of caution and let the ends dry out before planting. Just cover them lightly, in my experience they like to be close to the surface (like iris tubers). I have done the inside/outside thing, I have also just grown it inside. My favourite way now is to start them real early inside and then move the pot outside or transplant to the garden when it is warm for them to mature and I can harvest in the fall. @@melahd6604 I have always used what I had. Rather than get caught up in analysis paralysis I would just try something and see how it goes. Or even better yet…do one with just the potting mix and do another with the potting mix and add fertilizer. Then you can see which works best for you. I will always lean into an experiment rather than just doing what someone says. Nobody is gardening under the exact same conditions 😜

Yes, my nonorganic ginger rotted away without sprouting. Not sure if it was irradiated or treated with a sprout inhibitor or both.

Going to try it out in the garden this year but will have to get it started indoors to give it enough time to get to a decent size.

How do you know when it’s done

Hi Simon, "done" is a harder thing to quantify as it depends on what you want. If you want the tender ginger shoots (like what is used for sushi ginger) then you will want to harvest it when the leafy stems are still green. It will have a very thin skin and maybe a pinkish hue. If you want the mature ginger then you will want to wait until the leafy stems have died back and fallen off. At this point it will have the thicker beige skin like the stuff you see in the grocery store. Just make sure to only take what you need so there is still some left to keep growing and making you more ginger!.

I'm growing standard grocery store ginger just fine. (Non organic)

Non organic is fine just wash it well, it has a growth inhibitor sprayed on it.

Hi Mark, from my experience the ginger rhizome does grow horizontally BUT it does throw down long “roots”. It would be interesting to try and see how it works!

@@The_IndoorGardener im thinking the root might go down 1 or 2 inches then turn to spread out on bottom.this would require so much less space than a enormous pot

I grew ginger outside last year. Unfortunately it seemed to rot when I brought it in in the fall. I will do it again though

Hmm…mine was ok when I have brought it in before, but after the whole thrips episode I’m not doing that anymore. The one I have going now (the one in the video) just stays inside all the time :)

It goes through a cycle of growing and producing leaves and then dying back. It goes through the cycle every year. If you want the more tender ginger shoots you can harvest when the leaves are present. If you want the more mature ginger like you see in the grocery store you have to wait until the leaves have dried up and died back. Just make sure not to harvest all of it so there is some left to continue the cycle.
