@@wholefedhomestead I'm an experienced gardener and binge watch many gardening channels, but can say yours is the one I'd love to see more of. Your garden tour video was awesome, I can't wait to see more. I'd love to see what you're doing each month and a brief tour if you have the time, as I'm sure all the other viewers would as well. Cheers.

I would also love to see more of your garden (just finding your channel so I'll be going thru more growing videos. We live across the way from you in Northern Upstate NY (zone 4). Howdy neighbor. Every year I try to make my garden a bit bigger and we love love love onions so I'm quite happy to have found this video because I just bought seed instead of doing sets in the spring. Hoping seeds work better for us as they have for you.
Thanks, totally demystified the whole onion experience.

I've never heard someone say "flap over" so many times before 😂. Great video, thank you! ❤
I used to store onions in pantyhose with a knot between each onion. I could just cut off the bottom one as I need it and leave the rest hanging.
You have the best voice. Your videos are so easy to listen to (and informative…).

Thank you for the series. My hubby has some questions. 1. A few of my onions are going to seed. Are these okay to use? 2. Do you ever eat the green leaves? 3. Do you use fertilizer in the garden? 4. What went wrong with the sets? You said you never had luck with them.
This is the best video on "growing onions" . I have seen the 3 videos and I will do the same thing for my first year at growing onions. Mine are already peaking above the soil, under lights in my basement, it is February 14 in my zone 5a. Thanks for doing these videos for us, it is greatly appreciated. 😊😊😊

Excellent information my dear! Thank you so much!!!!!
This really is the best onion video, to the point but very detailed and informative. I swear one year I'll get it! Every year I,plant them in seedling mix, they come up like tiny grass and that's it. They stall and die off and I do water properly and lightly fertilize and give them light. Onions and beets are my nemesis. Potatoes and tomatoes do very well for me.

Thanks for these videos! I've been gardening for 2 years and have grown nice onions starting from seed but I really like your method. I didn't trim my seedlings and they were quite a mess as they grew. This is so much more tidy. I love the deep pots, too and bought some just for onions although I may also use them for tomato starts. I'm in Montana and it is so nice to see how other cold climate gardeners do things.
I’m going to try onions again this coming year. Hopefully they all get nice and big like yours!

Very exact and well explained information about growing onions. We have agricultural land on The Big Island. We will probably have to grow in containers because we lack good soil…..ps…..do you use any amendments to your soil

Thanks for the video 😃 I love growing onions, but not seeds, cause our season is so short here near the Arctic Circle. All the best Mirja 🇫🇮
There, all 3 in this series watched and liked. Still would like to know your thoughts on a few things. 1) How close to your seedlings are your lights, or does it matter? 2) What spacing do you use to plant your seedlings? 3) Do you use any fertilizer while the plants are growing in the house? 4) Do you fertilize once planted and with what? 5) Do you save seeds from veg that aren't hybrids, for planting next year, and if so, do you test germinate them? Just curious, comparing notes 1 gardener to another. Ones never to old to learn. We grow about 200/yr. I like the idea of the 5" starter containers. Very nice series, TYFS Mark n Rosa

Hi Mark n Rosa- thanks! 1- that really really depends on your lights 2- 5-6” (I’m sure I mentioned this in the video) 3- Nope 4- Nope 5- I don’t save onion seeds, but I do save a few other things here and there

@@wholefedhomestead it's funny, all I keep hearing is "onions are heavy feeders", and yet you seem to just let them go.
Looks like you are implementing the Dixondale method.
Like others say so often here, your videos are nicely made and informative. Thanks! Question: why do you prefer to plant shallow and have the bulb on top of the soil like that? Does that just help keep it drier and more clean?
@wholefedhomestead
6 ай бұрын
Thanks! The onions seem to grow bigger that way, and yes are drier and less prone to rotting. I’ve also seen some people dig out the soil from around the onion once it starts to bulb up.
❤❤❤
VERY nice harvests. We had so much rain this spring and summer here in New England that my onions, and many other veg suffered. Many of my bulbs didnt get to be full sized, as we had a lot of dark, gray, cloudy, rainy days

@@wholefedhomestead "wet" for sure. last year i wtered 2 times a day. This year? 2 times a week, at best
Oh I have a question from part 1 and part 2. I am new with grow lights and I don't know how far from the lights my onions are supposed to be and when it changes. I've watched part one and part two each two times now and I really can't get a feel for that. Help please and thank you
@wholefedhomestead
10 ай бұрын
That might seem confusing because it really depends on how powerful your lights are. Mine is quite powerful so I keep it pretty high up… but with weaker ones you might need to keep it an inch or two directly above.
Can I ask how long does it take from planting seeds to harvest.thanks
Have you turned off the water during the time that you are letting them sit for the 2 weeks in the garden? I had a beautiful harvest this year but they all got a blackish mold which freaked me out and I tossed them all. I can grow them, but the curing process never works for me.
@wholefedhomestead
9 ай бұрын
We actually don’t water much because we get ample rain… so I’m not super well versed on watering crops. However, ours get rained on plenty and don’t mold. But I’d cut down or stop watering if you can.
@wholefedhomestead Did you use any fertilizers, if so what kind and how often? Did you trim them at all after planting in the ground? Also, what grow zone are you in? - Thanks. :)
@wholefedhomestead
Ай бұрын
No fertilizer and I don't trim them. We are zone 4. 👍🏻
? Do you plant onions in the fall in order to have seeds the following year.
Great video, I will go back and watch 1 & 2. My garage stays at 40 degrees in the winter, do you think that is too cold? Thank you.

That should be fine, as long as it doesn’t get much colder… and of course there’s zero light.

So my question is, when the onions flop over, do you stop watering? If yes, how do you do that if you are letting them naturally flop over? Maybe you have 2 that flopped next to 2 that have not?
@wholefedhomestead
6 ай бұрын
So, we don’t really water here… we typically get rain every week. I’d say err on the side of watering them lightly even if some are flopped over.
What about the greens? I like to dehydrate and grind them. Your thoughts?
@wholefedhomestead
4 ай бұрын
If you cut the greens off when they’re green/wet, you risk introducing bacteria into the onion and it won’t cure or store well. Not a chance I’m willing to take, but others might.
Your explanations on growing onions are exceptionally clear and helpful. Thanks a ton for sharing your knowledge! 😊 By the way, we've sent you an email regarding a possible collaboration. Please feel free to take a look whenever you have a chance. Thank you!

1. They aren’t they great/partially dried out at onion harvest time. 2. You risk the onion rotting in storage if you cut them off while still green.
How long do they stay away from grow lights or bed where you put seedlings.
