Regarding the Coco situation, I think that was one of the few times where I agreed more with the agency than the idol. Prior to Coco's solo release, she had also been given a solo song (It's called "Wishy Washy" if you want to check it out) that led to lukewarm reception. Sori had not yet also received a solo before Coco decided to want to release music once again. At this time, Sori had just gained a good amount of media attention for being in the 'winning' female group on Mixnine (the group didn't actually debut). So it made sense that the company was trying to capitalize on selling Sori. What also happened at the same time was that Coco auditioned for the Unit while Sori made it onto Mixnine. But Coco didn't even make it past auditions, and was told her audition wouldn't be aired to essentially spare her from criticism. Financially it makes sense to invest into the member who just gained some decent attention, right? I do believe the company should've been more transparent with their plans to Coco, of course. But overall I really don't like how Coco made Sori look in this situation, because she didn't do anything to deserve all of this negative attention. Even in the end the company didn't actually sue Coco and let her contract go. Though I've seen some sources say that the company lost against Coco, which is interesting. To me the company was trying to do what was best given their resources. As much as it would've been great to give it equally, we all the know that the industry is chasing success not equal opportunity. EDIT/ 2022 update: But this happened a long time ago now, and the situation had died down. Sori's music never led to enough attention, which is why she decided to stop making music, but her fanbase remains small and loud! Coco still uploads on KZread and released a song called Lately in 2021. Part of me hopes they made up somehow after this.

  • @nicolegoh9748

Lots of reasons actually. Conflict of interest (since snsd also model for clothes brands), missing out on schedules (2014 was a crucial year for sm because of all the scandals + snsd were scheduled for their Tokyo Dome tour later that year), not the same focus. Yoona didn't have any acting activities the whole of 2014 and Sooyoung's clothing line Beaming Effect was a charity drive rather than a fashion brand (like what B&E is). Jessica also had similar solo activities prior to 2014 like getting a lead role in a musical. Really don't think it was an sm thing for her case cause snsd renewed their contracts that year + there're rumors that Jessica was only supposed to stay on for a year more anyways before going on hiatus to focus on B&E (supposedly they were gonna announce it at their Tokyo Dome tour and it aligns with how there was a whole mv + song of CMIYC recorded with her in it, also how her contract pretty much expired in 2015 and she left fuss free from sm). I highly doubt that sm would've kicked her just cause "she wasn't giving them a cut of B&E", they lose more money kicking her out cause they effectively the brand reputation and soshi bond they built for 7 years, also shelving that rumored Jessica&Krystal album + S2 of their reality show, also all the money Jessica brings in as a member of snsd alone

@@princesskristan oh yeah there was lots of speculation about that and I wouldn't be surprised if it was true tbh, snsd has always been the main priority for the other 8 + Tokyo Dome was a huge deal to them cause it had always been their dream to perform there. Jessica was going to become and is B&E's CEO and creative director, I also don't really see how she could've managed all that on top of prioritizing snsd so it must've been pretty frustrating for the others if Jessica hadn't been as fully focused as they were Whatever the truth is it's undeniable that they parted on bad terms with each other, seeing as how Jessica never went for Tiffany's birthday last year despite neither of them being in sm anymore 😬😬

Jessica's situation was just so messy all around because while we don't know how exactly it was settled and who was telling the truth, it's undeniable that it makes no sense to kick Jessica at all Like it's not even a case of "sm kicked Jessica cause she didn't let them have a cut of B&E" because they made more losses from kicking her out (longest trainee = most money spent, 7 years of brand reputation and cultivating the soshi bond destroyed, yet another scandal for sm in 2014, Jessica being a popular member especially in China, scrapping J&K S2 + the album + losing favour with Krystal, rerecording and refilming CMIYC, also ot9 had just re-signed their contracts that year)

Honestly, I don’t think SM thought that Jessica’s firing would have impacted the group much. I mean, they probably thought it would be another TVXQ situation where members left but the group still retained their popularity. And B&E was the sticking point. They wouldn’t make her choose between the group and her clothing line or accused her for using her SNSD fame to promote the clothing brand otherwise. Remember that Jessica came out with a clothing line at a time that it was extremely rare for idols to do and it wasn’t uncommon for established idols to run their own businesses with the permission from their companies. SM was butthurt that they failed to get on the B&E money and punished Jessica for it. I stopped being a SONE after that. I’m not going to speculate the relationships within the group but them saying that they were going keep her in the group then suddenly voted her out had put a foul taste in my mouth and I didn’t mess with SM groups for 4.5 years after that.

The fact that so many idols have filed lawsuits against their companies for mismanagement, mistreatment, lack of protection from netizens and saesangs, and even outright abuse tells me that it isn't just an issue within the kpop system but South Korea's legal system as well. It was a lawsuit by Hangeng, formerly of Super Junior, that made it so a contract could only last for seven years, but that made me question that if they could get protections put in place for slave contracts, then why couldn't they fight to get other protections put in place? Taeyong from NCT is extremely overworked to the point of needing to be carried off of the stage ones performances are over, Momo from Twice and many other female idols have stated that their companies have made them lose so much weight that they were scared of dying, and SM Entertainment artists have the WORST saesang problem that I have ever seen. I get that the entertainment system is fucked up on principle, no entertainment system on the planet is innocent, but kpop is the only one that I've seen that makes me genuinely question why these companies continue to receive trainees or why someone would choose to become an idol in the first place? As fucked as the American entertainment system is, at least these people have protections set in place to protect them, especially in the case of stalkers who have been known to get homicidal (ex: Selena, John Lennon). Hollywood is a little under a century old, but Kpop is not even 40 years old and has had issues ever since kpop GROUPS became a thing. These companies are having CHILDREN choose their career over the health, mentally abuse them without care and then have the nerve to act like the victim when the idol wants to leave. Need I remind you of TRCNG, The East Light, and Stellar? Sulli (may her soul rest in peace)? All the other idols who have admitted to being sent into dark depression with no support from their company? The idols who have gotten to the point where they have BEGGED netizens and sasaengs to on numerous occasions to leave them alone? If the kpop industry doesn't change, I won't be surprised if it starts dying because idols stop putting up with the abuse and companies stop recieving trainees because said idols make sure that they open up about their treatment by these companies. Hell, I won't be surprised if the idols eventually say "Enough is enough" - especially with the frankly disturbing amount of idols who've developed severe eating, social, and mood disorders or idols attempting to/taking their own life - and push back against their companies. Either way that it goes, something's got to give in both the company and the government, especially with eyes on the kpop industry growing.

They are an irritating company at times, and haven’t always treated all of their idols equally, but apparently they don’t go to the extremes, and actually pay their artists quite well. But for her it would be silent, when more popular members are treated with way too much attention compared to other members, it can really affect the other members. I understand what that's like and it sucks , favoritism is awful. Another example of this is the pre debut group "Alpha Ray" , a former member called Aiganym gained lots of attention for being Kazakh , she left the group and in her statement she said that she had issues with the company and issues with the members who got a bit jealous. See how much issue that creates???

the Korean government should come up with a thorough system to review and background check anyone trying to start a management agency, including if they have the proper funds and resources to properly manage, promote, support, and take care of a group of individual artist(s) because the things and crap that these artists have to go through is in many cases, in my opinion, inhuman....i understand having a nice, beautiful image, but i think the kpop industry goes way overboard in most of their idol requirements....still not clear as to what happened with my bias, Jessica of SNSD....it is such a shame with what is going on with Momoland....i used to worship the ground AOA walked on, and now they are just a shell of the former great group they used to be....such a shame....Mafia Entertainment, TS Entertainment, DR Music, Pledis, Star Empire Entertainment, CJ E&M, FNC Entertainment, Jellyfish Entertainment, Media Line Entertainment, and Yellow Bees agency, and many others need to either go out of business or be put out of business by the Korean government...

I feel like SM & maybe (just maybe cos we all still dk what went down with the members) the members of SNSD felt threatened by Jessica because Jessica knew her worth & her rights. Like she isn't just someone who'd agree to everything someone told her to do if she wasn't comfortable with it. & I feel like she always spoke her mind which is why they would've butt heads. That's just my theory though cos when I watch her, I just get that sense of a powerful woman who won't take shit from no one esp if she knows what they're doing is wrong towards her.

Sm is truly a horrible company, they overwork some idols and mismanage others. Just look at what they did to f(x). Some of the members of Nct are having health problems but are still being forced to promote and dance. Also the situation with Lay. He has expressed repeatedly that he wants to return to activities with Exo but sm is keeping him in China. The reason for this is that it is rumored that Lay's activities in China are making up 10% of the company's income. They are so money hungry that they are willing to permanently injure idols and damage their mental health. The way they treat their idols disgusts me. Foreign members also get mistreated a lot despite being one of the more popular members in their groups(i.e Winwin, Lay, Amber, Jessica etc)

I appreciate your videos and I've really been enjoying this series so far! I remember when TheEastLight's mistreatment was brought to light, it was a very sad and upsettingly frustrating experience to have to witness. Those boys were super talented and did not deserve any of the physical, emotional, and mental scarrings that they dealt with from their company. So, thank you for shedding light on situations like these that not many people would know much detail about or would usually turn away from. I've seen many videos and articles about some of these topics, but it's pretty tricky filtering through all of the information and knowing how much of it is accurate, your videos have really condensed these situations so the information is easy to understand and consume without leaving out any important evidence or skewing much of the stories. Some of these incidents I haven't even heard about so it was very eye-opening to learn more about them...if you plan on making a part 3, could you please cover the mistreatment of TRCNG.

I’d love to see you make a video on TVXQ - many Kpop fans, including yourself, use the term “slave contracts”, but probably don’t know who coined it or why... I don’t think anyone remembers and it sucks for their hardship not to be acknowledged when they (and Hankaeng) basically paved the way for any idol who has ever left their company since... but they are still suffering the consequences.

The Kpop industry is at its worst a dehumanizing "meat grinder" that chews up and spits out people who only wanted to be entertainers. The sad thing with MLD Entertainment is as bad as what happened with Daisy, Yeonwoo, and Taeha was. Momoland still gets treated as almost an afterthought by MLD Entertainment especially with the introduction of the new boy group T1419. While The East Light is almost like a nightmarish horror story you don't want to believe is true but it is and that makes all the sadder. 9 Muses Of Star Empire is a documentary that shows just how demeaning and abusive some companies can be to the Idols they train and that's not even getting to how the group was mishandled It's worth a watch but not easy to watch, to put it mildly.

I’m only on the 2nd person and I’m actually nauseous watching this. Like this literally makes me so anxious that it’s making me sick. It’s heartbreaking to hear what they have all been through... and I worry about my faves in kpop going through the same things.. they’re all overworked and there’s little care when it comes to their mental health and well being physically. I’m from the US so I forget that things are very different from culture in Korea and there’s a lot that goes on that seems like such an old way of thinking that it just makes me sad and angry for them all. The entertainment industry is brutal pretty much anywhere though so it’s not really about things being hard... but these hours of training and stuff are very much extreme. At least here ppl get paid and so at least they have comfort knowing that they’re hard work is being compensated at least. Money isn’t everything but for them not even making money and OWING money a year and a half after their debut?!?!?!! Like wtf this just really is bullshit

i feel that a situation that isn’t very well known about is about knk, ex-member youjin, and their ex-company YNB. like the general gist of it is that ynb is was a small company without a lot of money. In 2018, all the members had their contract terminated due to “internal issues”. and following that, is that the company announced that youjin left due to a panic disorder. Youjin (i forgot if it was through insta or his stream or if he has deleted it) recently clarified that that was made up and that he was dealing with depression, anxiety, and insomnia and that company did not help with that at all. Also, like the other groups in the video, he said that they were paid almost nothing and that their parents had to help them.
