Groundwork P3: Teaching Lateral Movements using In-Hand Work

Gymnastic Groundwork Part 3 of 6: Teaching Lateral Movements.
This video is all about teaching lateral movements using clicker training.
Lateral exercises where your horse is going sideways as well as forwards are really useful to build your horse’s suppleness, strength and straightness, which is why they’ve been used for thousands of years in both in-hand training and ridden work! But, how do we teach them using positive reinforcement?
By training a combination of cues through the isolations (part 2), such as lateral flexions, shoulders over and quarters-over, we can combine these with our leading work. This makes it a clear and simple process for you and your horse.
In this video, you’ll see how to introduce lateral work from the ground in exercises such as leg-yield and shoulder-in and you’ll see Rowan learning haunches-in.
This is all trained softly with relaxation as a priority and I use a marker (clicker training) and rewards to motivate and reinforce my horse.

Thank you for sharing your training techniques with us on youtube! They have shinned a light in many moments where I was ready to give up... I have been trying to teach Marley this exercise and the first day we were getting there, on the second session as I ask him to move over he does touch the target but shifts his bum to the side and faces me and we have to re-align and start again every time I ask, do you have any suggestions on how I could prevent or correct this response?
