Shepherd's Pie is indeed British. In all actuality Shepherd's Pie is made with ground lamb (that's the shepherd/sheep-herder connection). Ground beef or pork would be called Cottage Pie.
@SarahSodoma

Most of us Mississippi folks eat our chili over rice but in Kentucky they use noodles
Hubby is right, it is British. Shepherds pie is generally made with minced lamb, its cottage pie if its made with beef. I'm Scottish by the way lol. Thank you for sharing xx

I was going to say the same thing! My guy is from England. That part of the world takes their meat pies very seriously! :) This looks like a really good, easy Cottage Pie recipe. I'm going to try it - as well as the Cincinnati chili!
I just want to say how much I enjoy watching your cooking with your husband! Y’all crack me up! I’m a mom with toddlers and a baby so cooking dinner is a circus in my house right now, and watching you and your husband drinking wine and chatting while cooking really helps me realize my kids won’t be this little forever and I will get to leisurely sip on wine while cooking one day! I hope that doesn’t sound silly 😂 I just love the casual/conversational style of your videos!
So I made the shepherds pie tonight for 10 college age kids. They loved it! I had to quadruple it. I will definitely make this again for them. Thank you for the recipe 😊

That is the best review!! 🙌🙌💜
Here are in my state of Nebraska, It’s common to eat a cinnamon roll with your chili. When I was a kid growing up, chili and cinnamon roll day was very popular in the school lunch room. One of the lunch ladies made the most wonderful homemade cinnamon rolls. Unfortunately, they don’t have a recipe anymore and now they use the rise and bake kind.

That was actually my idea for my next “lunch lady recipes” video. I’ve heard so many peeps eating cinnamon rolls with chili. Sounds great to me!
We make our Shepherd’s Pie or whatever it’s called with canned green beans. To each his own. We love it. We are from Michigan.
Skyline is what got me obsessed with cheese and hot sauce on my chili and spaghetti. I even put it on Italian dishes and goulash now. I love it
Blessings blessings always
Okay, that bubbling shepherd’s pie, OMG🤯🤯🤯yummm
Layer ground beef, can of veg all, Make up instant potatoes and put cheese on top. Bake till cheese melts. Make up biscuits to go with it. Yummy
We are from the Cincinnati area and have grown up eating chili. The main versions come from Skyline, Gold Star, and Dixie. Even the local Saks 5th Avenue used this dish on their poster. You did a terrific job making it! So glad you enjoyed it!
I like the way you and Darin goof around.
Your recipes look so yummy! Loving your down home charm and making me feel welcome in your kitchen❤
Yum! I am glad you are back to cooking and decorating on this channel.
I'm from Georgia and I love shepherds pie!
Hope you dont mind but that is what in Britain is called cottage pie because its made with beef. Shepapperds pie is made with minced lamb rosemary red wine and thyme if you making it fancy but bacsically it lamb not beef but they are are British favourites and staples. Love watching you guys.xx
I grew up eating chili with rice. That’s how my mom made it. At our engagement party I tried chili Mac for the first time. Omg. It’s changed the way I eat chili. I only use macaroni or macaroni and cheese with my chili now. One time, I accidentally poured cinnamon in my chili instead of cumin and actually really liked it. I’m from northern Ohio and have never tried Cincinnati chili. I might have to try it this fall.
I live in the midwest and don't ever make shepherd's pie. Your recipe looked amazing. 😋 I had Skyline chili 1 time and didn't like it at all. It was sweet and I like my spaghetti sauce savory, no sugar. Your finished product looked yummy if it wasn't sweet.
Shepherd's/cottage pie is in our regular fall/winter rotation. I mainly use a recipe from aboutamom Freezer Friendly Shepherd's Pie. For a speed version, I brown the ground beef with some garlic, add a little Worcestershire sauce and then add a can of condensed vegetable soup with a little water. I saw someone recently top with tater tots and that looked good to me too. Cincinnati chili is still on my bucket list, and the flavor combination sounds great to me. I have a cookbook recipe called chilighetti... I used to make it for church gatherings, but haven't made it in years.
In my cottage pie, I make it very similar to the way you did. I start with the mirepoix. Then I add in the ground chuck with flour. I add s&p, garlic, beef broth, W sauce. I don’t use wine or tomato sauce/paste. Growing up, my parents did make something like it but my stepdad would put green beans in instead of green peas. My mom rarely bought them but if your kids don’t like green peas, try beans. There’s really no one way to make it for YOUR family. You can make it the way you like it. It comes from a necessity to eat the vegetables they had left before they went bad. I’ve never seen cheddar cheese on it before but it looks delicious. I’ve always used parm.
My sheppards pie sometimes- I use left over taco meat then layer corn then mashed potatoes on top and bake. Yummy
I’ve been following your videos from here in NE Ohio for several years now, I’ve been with you through 3 homes! Now, we’ve got to get you to make some Buckeyes in honor of our great Ohio State Buckeyes

The chocolate peanut butter balls?
I'm from just outside of Detroit MI and yes Cincinnati Chili and Shepherd's Pie are fall/winter staples... at least in my house
When I make shepherds pie, it’s ground beef with onion, salt and pepper then add a jar of spaghetti sauce, frozen peas and then top that with real mashed potatoes and Velveeta cheese so delicious. Yours looks very good to. !
Try adding French fried onions on top of the shepherds pie really adds a ton of a flavor and texture
For the chili, I sometimes add some maple syrup and liquid smoke .
I’d never heard of Cincinnati Chili but now I’m dying to try it. I read that it was created by Greek immigrants in the twenties , hence those Mediterranean spices, and originally meant to be a sauce served over hot dogs. I’m a fan of Bob’s Big Boy diner’s chili spaghetti and this looks even better!
We ate homemade chili over spaghetti noodles growing up. I didn’t know that wasn’t the way to eat noodles until moving away from my small southern town 30 years ago.
She speeds pie is my husbands favorite! I have a favorite Texas chili recipe
I live in southeastern Ohio, and Cincinnati chili is not common here. Your version looked tasty though. I’ve also never had shepherds pie. Lol. After hearing you rave about how good it was I made it for dinner tonight and the family loved it. Thanks for sharing, Jen. I always get so much inspiration watching you cook😊
One of my thanksgiving left over dishes is to make a variation of Shepards Pie using turkey and mashed sweat potatoes.
Great video! Thank you ❤
I love both! I also make something called chili mac. It’s a regular chili recipe served over macaroni noodles with onions and cheese as toppings.
That's really smart about not adding spices/herbs before draining beef.
Sounds yummy❤
I have had the first one many times, but never Cincinnati Chili. It makes me want to try this! Thanks Jen.
I have been wanting to make shepherd's pie and now I will have two extra seeing yours. I've never had Cincinnati Chile but I think I might try it. Thanks, Jen.
The last receipt sounds like when I clean out scraps!😄
Makes me hungry for shepherd's pie for sure. From Illinois originally and and while we didn't do Cincinnati chili, other styles were (and are still where we live in WY) very popular on a, chilly fall day, cold winter day, snow storm, football Sunday, etc. We always served with cornbread or peanut butter sandwiches and added shredded cheddar and sour cream on top. My favorite recipe uses cocoa powder, cola, and french onion soup concentrate!
So looking for a new shepherd's pie recipe - thanks so much! Can't wait to try it. Looks delicious!
I've never tried Cincinnati chili but it looks really tasty!! I have had shepherds pie but I've never made it from scratch!
Your recipes look delicious.
I love Cincinnati chili. Its different but its so delicious 😋
I have tried both. I like skyline chili. I haven't had it in awhile. I might have to make some.
Cincinnati chili is delicious! Love that you tried it out!
When you add ground meat without browning or cooking it, it changes the texture of it and the meat breaks apart into very fine pieces. Some hot dog chili's are made this way so it provides good coverage over the hotdog and you don't have to contend with large chunks of meat. And both recipes looked delicious. Shepherd's pie is such a comfort food for me. And I'll have to try the Cincinnati chili soon. I just have to get my mind wrapped around putting it over noodles.

I loved the texture of it!!
Also, I make shepherds pie all the time in the fall/winter season. It is a staple in our home sometimes I but tator tots and the cheese instead of mashed potatoes. Both versions are delicious ❤!
I haven't tried this or made it, but regarding the chicken broth in beef dish... i heard on some cooking channel that if you use the opposite, if you will, broth, as the dish, it enhances the flavor. I've done it a couple of times and I have to say the food was amazing! I'd like to say it was a result of switching up the broths... cause I didn't have the original to compare to, but it was so delicious!
Looking forward to trying the Cincinnati chili 😊

I’m from Cincy and we love our chili! You nailed it! ❤ the only things I do differently that skyline style does is use my immersion blender to make it thinner. The original is a pretty thin consistency.
Yummy 😋
cool
I can't wait to try that Cincinnati chili!!! Looks delicious...
I’m from ohio( Columbus) we love Cincinnati chill! No cumin!( it’s called chili five way! Over noodles with kidney beans sprinkled on top( rinsed) cheese sour cream and onions and crushed saltines on top
I'm Cincinnati born and raised, it's a really close recipe to what is in the real deal I'll have to follow your recipe to really give my opinion. You did a great job describing how it is around Cincinnati. Skyline Chili is the most popular place. Your Shepards Pie looks amazing too.

When I was in Cincinnati you could get Sky line chili at Kroger grocery store. I liked it but I also like chili regular, Cincinnati chili was good for something different
I have never ate Shepards pie but it looks good gonna try it and we eat spaghetti sometimes with our chili
Hi Jenn. I can not, chili over spaghetti??? That is so odd. I, too, get in a rut when it comes to dinner recipes so thanks for the inspiration. I have had Shepards/Cottage pie before and it is wonderful for a cozy Fall dinner. Now if only the weather in Tampa, Florida would go below 90 degrees , I would definitely make this.

It’s SO odd!! But it’s so good. I would not steer you wrong! I couldn’t believe it either! 😂🥰
Both look great! I actually live in Ohio ( north of Cincinnati). I am not a huge fan of Cincinnati chili, but it is definitely a big thing up here. Glad you tried it! 😊
That sweet chili with jalapeños poppers or fried jalapeños is really good 👍 I also use cinnamon instead of chocolate so maybe I’ll try it this way next time I make it 🍲
I make Shepherd’s Pie with ground beef, (that’s the way my British mom made it because us kids would not eat lamb) onions, garlic, flour for thickener, beef broth OR vegetable broth, canned mixed vegetables and Bob Evans Original mashed potatoes. My husband and sister absolutely love it made this way! My husband eats a peanut butter sandwich with his chili! Thanks for the recipes!
I like to add my onion also and cook it with the meat.
I remember the first time I had Shepherd's Pie was at church camp. It looked (and tasted) like the leftovers fron the whole week, covered in mashed potatoes. Needless to say I was not a fan and renamed it "leftover pie"...lol. Many MANY years later...seeing the version you made, makes me want to give it a try again. 😋
My hubby told me shepherds pie is with lamb and cottage pie is with ground beef. I prefer ground beef but sometimes he puts 25%lamb and 75% ground beef and its really good. Love watching your video's!
I am originally from Ohio and I love Skyline chili! They also put it on hot dogs 😊. I now live in TN and our Walmarts carry the Skyline chili in the freezer section. It has the spaghetti noodles so you just have to add your toppings and its very close to what they serve in the restaurants.
Our favorite hot lunch in school was cinnamon rolls & chili. It's still a menu item today.
I have tried shepherd's pie, but not that fancy. Your's looked like a restaurant style one. It looked like perfection. Never had the chili, but you made it look good. Have a nice weekend. ❤
Love Cincinnati chili ❤I’m from Ohio
The best shepherd's pie to me is hamburger, mashed taters and Velveeta on top. And burn that cheese a bit for me!! Perfect meal!
How fun! I love your take on the Cincinnati Chili. It is an interesting flavor, for sure. For those who get all ugly about adding noodles to chili, just do not do it. My family adores it that way. Thank you for sharing these fun recipes! ❤😊

Hey girl! You too!!
Here in Canada, Shepherds Pie is very common! Never heard of Cincinnati Chili, to me Chili should have kidney beans or some sort of beans in it and served with garlic toast. BTW, once more I have to comment on your gorgeous dish you made the Pie in! Thanks for sharing!
@CookCleanAndRepeat

Thank you! This chili is completely different than regular chili. I love some “regular” chili with beans, cheese, sour cream, and Fritos. It was fun to try!
Team chili and cinnamon rolls all the way! I tried cincinnati chili once before, it was good, but it's not very common in the area I live. Never have tried shepard's pie, but it looks pretty good!
I do love all your recipes and appreciate you sharing them with us but one thing I must comment on is the cleanliness of your stove and kitchen area. I have watched some channels and cannot finish watching because of the condition of the surroundings. Thank you!!!
😂, we used to have a Skyline Chili which is based out of Cincinnati, Ohio but when I was young we ate there a few times and I didn't like chili in general so I would get their mini hot dogs. As an adult I eat and make chili not super hot so I will have to try this version. By your description it sounds really good ❤! Thanks for showing us how to make it Jen!
It looks more like chili hotdogs sauce, to me but I’ve never heard of this before. I’ve never had chili with any kind of pasta. Thank you for sharing this recipe 💕🙏🙏

I've never made Shepherds Pie. I've had it once, I didn't care too much for it. Your looks delicious. The chili, I've never heard of. I'm from Iowa, wrong part of the country I guess.
I make what we call shepherds pie with minced meat not lamb. It’s a staple in many Canadian kitchens. It’s 100% comfort food. My family likes corn so I put the mince on the bottom then a layer of corn then the mashed potatoes and sometimes a bit of cheese on the top. So delicious. 🇨🇦
Northern Illinois here, I use corn and green beans in ours ❤ peas are vile just saying 😂
Well, I was about to say that I'd never eat chili over spaghetti noodles (I have tried it with macaroni, and that is something I won't do again 😜!), BUT the way you and your husband described it makes me think it might not be too bad after all...as long as I reframe it as a type of spaghetti sauce vs chili in my mind! 😅 I have had, and made, shepherd's/cottage pie quite a few times (one of my grandmas was from England and made it a lot). It's not my favorite, but it's definitely a warm and filling meal! 😊
I make my shepherds pie with corn & rotel 😊

I’ve made Shepherds Pie before and actually I was a lunch lady in a school cafeteria and made from scratch shepherds pie there too. I’ve never done the chili before but here in Va they call it chili-mac . My husband loves chili-mac but I’ve never made it at home before
I learned to make shepherd pie when I was in high school home ec class. We used green beans.
@CookCleanAndRepeat
10 ай бұрын
I loved home ec! I bet green beans are good too.
❤❤❤❤
Chili is good over rice too
We don't like those green peas either. We use the canned mixed vegetables, drained in our shepherd's pie. They are good and have very few of those peas.
I use cream of mushroom soup instead of a tomato base Always homemade mashed potatoes
Yes I tried Cincinnati chili I am from Ohio
I don't think I could put ground beef in without browning & draining it. I did a little research on Cincinnati chili. I had never heard of it before. It's a Mediterranean meat sauce developed by immigrant restaurateurs in the 1920s as a topping for spaghetti and hotdogs (coneys). Found this interesting.
Chilli Mac 😊 I’ve never made a Shepard pie I have a picky husband hard to please him Love your videos Blessings to each 🙏🎃🌻❤️
