Love the P-47, Having flown both in WW 2, my father always said " If you want to get there fast, fly the P-51, if you want to get there and back, fly the Jug.

I believe it, since most attacks are surprise, and the ability to survive initial damage is paramount, the P 47 is all around the best aircraft to fight in during World War II
The P-47 largest single engine fighter in WW2 Is a Dwarf next to a skyraider. I seen wicked wabbit and a Skyraider in Sevierville Tennessee hanger . I was amazed at the size comparison.
My opinion (for what its worth, I’m no expert) is that the P47 and the B29 especially, showcase the practically unlimited power of American aviation during the later stages of the Second World War. They cheerfully chose the biggest engine in the catalogue and built this gigantic plane around it, over twice the resources needed for a Spitfire and made it work, an astonishing aircraft. Furthermore they made over 15,000 of them! The B29 program was absolute madness financially, with enough problems to deter all but the most ferociously determined. But, and its a big but, they made it work and work brilliantly enough to finish the war in two missions. Money well-spent.
Brazilian pilots joined the USAF, fought in northern Italy, using the P-47, of the 48 pilots of the Brazilian Fighter Group that carried out war missions there were a total of 22 casualties, five of which were killed by anti-aircraft artillery, eight had their planes shot down and parachuted over enemy territory, six were removed from the flight by medical prescription. They carried out a total of 180 missions. On April 22, 1945, they flew 11 missions, each flying two, even three times, at intervals of a few hours. Ten. Danilo Moura had his P-47 shot down by the flag, when attacking a composition, jumped with a parachute and walked 450 km disguised as a beggar, begging for food in houses, sleeping in shipyards, passing several times by German troops. He did everything contrary to what he was told, in case of a fall, he managed to reach Bologna, 10 kg (22.05 pounds) thinner, where he was welcomed by the partisans, and regrouped the American forces.
This flight need an A-10 Warthog to complete the three ground attack aircraft. The P-47 was the only one used as a fighter but excelled as ground attack. The other 2 were ground attack and support.
Such a beautiful pair of birds, wish I could see them in person
Jeez the P-47 is known for being a fairly sizeable fighter and the skyraider makes it look small
Just when does the twin turbochargers come in to play....???
dimensions of Skyraider
What happen to all the coments ?
The P-47, to me one of the most underrated fighters of WW2, is my favorite fighter plane. I would give almost anything to see one in flight. It has to be an awe inspiring spectacle. I have been close to a P-51 and an F4U-5N. I have been close to a B-17 and a B-24. But, nothing would compare to seeing a Thunderbolt in flight.
Awesome! My Dad flew the P-47 in WW2. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video!! Love the sound of radial engines and love those P-47 Thunderbolts & Skyraiders!!
The sound of the P-47's engine is unforgettable, the aircraft magnificent! Thank you for posting this fine video!
Who doesn't love a Thunderbolt?! Great video!
Wow what a great video! Man that Skyraider makes the Thunderbolt look small!!
Radial engines sound so awesome. Didn't realize that the Skyraider was such a large aircraft. I have never seen one up close. Usually seen with Vietnam era jets. I understand it was a beast. Would love to see one.

I believe there is one at the Air Force museum in Dayton and I remember seeing one down at the Pensacola naval Air station Pensacola Florida very nice air museums worthwhile going to
The P-47 is my favorite plane to fly in my Jane's WWII Combat Flight Simulator. It can take a beating, and still fly home, whereas the P-51, while fast and nimble, gets shot down rather easily, and can't carry as much ammo.
Beautiful aircraft indeed, both of them. They are both top notch at what they do. And oh what beautiful music they make in flight!
05:02 That's called a "radial engine" and that engine plays some sweet, sweet music. Thank you, sir.
Gosh that is a gorgeous plane.
So many people say the P-47 is ugly etc. but to me its like an American muscle car shes beautiful and powerful. Ive always loved the looks of it. The P-51 and Spitfire are beautiful but in a different way, like a sports car, with everything leaning towards maneuvering and high speed, but the P-47 like the muscle cars is brute power and good looks.

Well, Alexander Kartveli, the person who designed the P-47, once said about the Thunderbolt: "It will be a dinosaur, but it will be a dinosaur with good proportions."
The sounds from the flybys are awesome!
Built with a ruggedness that many an airman owed his life to, the Republic Aircraft Company P:47. Her many feats were legendary . High fuel consumption was her one weakness. But few combat aircraft could take the beating the Jug could sustain and keep on ticking. She could deliver sledge hammer blows to both airborne and ground enemy units with equal deft.

More were lost in ground attack missions than in air to air combat!
The P-47 has got to be my favorite of all prop aircraft. Just an absolute legend. As much as I like the P-51, the P-47 has it beat in terms of firepower, ruggedness, and speed. They may not look like it but, the P-47 can really haul ass for a prop plane.

lander4545 Yea, that was the point that I was trying to make. The "for a prop plane" remark was only meant as an indication of how far planes have advanced since then and wasn't meant as a derogatory statement toward the plane. As I said before, the P-47 is my favorite! :)

lander4545 What I meant was, you guys said it could outrun anything. Yes, in dives, because it was built for it. Fighter Bomber that releied on alltitude. It was built as a durable fighter bomber. They made it sound like a damn energy fighter. And honestly the armor is only so good til you meet a pair of 20mm cannons.
@xBMF9000x
10 жыл бұрын
Daniel B Not an energy fighter? Tell that to the near 4000 German pilots who were shot down by P-47's that were using energy fighting tactics. Furthermore, yes they could take a pair of 20mm cannons. Look up Robert S. Johnosn. He was a P-47 pilot in WW2. He was flying bomber escort in a razorback model P-47 and had to tangle with a FW-190. The 190 poured every single round from its 2 machine guns and its 4 20mm cannons into Johnson's plane and Johnson still made it home in one piece. And when I say that the German pilot poured every single round, I mean literally every single round. If the plane can take 4 20mm's then 1 pair is a cake walk for the P-47.
@danielb4265

xBMF9000x You are so off topic. I just stated that you guys dont seem to know what it was built for, great aircraft for its purpose. And the reason for 4000 kills which im not even sure are correct numbers is the turbocharger which let the p47 climb higher than any plane and then simply dive down behind and shoot down its enemy. And you seem to think that the more kills the better the aircraft.. So is bf109 then the best aircraft due to it scoring most kills? Really off topic atm. Great plane, for its purpose. Should altho not be confused with a energy fighter or similar. It was a fighter bomber used to ambush at high alltitudes therefor achieving victory. If cought by a enemy tho the only thing to do was dive and gain speed, could not outturn anything pretty much.
Thanks for a great video! Thanks for the awesome sound! Great job by the pilots giving you some great angles. That Skyraider pilot can really reef it around!. P 47 is my all time favorite.
Depois de tanto tempo o P-47 ainda continua maravilhoso no céu.
That is simply gorgeous!
If I owned a tail dragger, I would install a forward camera to aid in maneuvers while on the ground.
Great Vid my friend!! The P-47 is one of my all time favorites.
Nice video , thanks for sharing !
What a sweet video.
Always great video. Merci beaucoup pour toutes ces vidéos qui nous permettent de ne pas oublier. Thanks for all these video
The P-47 was clearly a great aircraft, for its time. The Spad, however, was one of the few all time classics. In production from 1945 to 1957 (!), and in service well into the 1970s, it was the emotional ancestor of the A-10 Warthog. With two twenties in each wing and a ridiculous number of hard points, I read a Spad could deliver more ordnance in a single pass than a late WW II Navy destroyer in a full broadside. I don't know if that is actually true, but the A-1 was a magnificent, timeless aircraft. And some were modified to carry a four man crew for recon duties! P-47 was good stuff, A-1 was great.............

I’ve read that the A1 could carry an ordnance load equal to its own weight…only aircraft that could do that…
I love the A-1 It's one of my favorite planes.
Wow what a bird!
The P-47, being a Yuuuuge! taildragger, was a handful to taxi. There's footage here on Y/T of a squadron of Thunderbolt's getting ready for a mission, and each had a LITERAL "wingman" - a member of the ground crew SITTING on one wing of each plane giving hand signals to the pilots as they lined up for takeoff! I think the FAA might frown on that practice today! The F4U Corsair, with the same engine and a very long fuselage had same visibility problems with the nose up. It was initially rejected for carrier service due to landing difficulty. The Brit's used it on their carriers and came up with the sweep approach technique, later used by Marine and Navy pilots.
I didn't have the "privilege" of going to Vietnam but guys who did always spoke of their appreciation and love for the Skyraider. The jet boys would be there and gone in a flash, but the Raider hung around like a faithful old dog. Its one big aircraft. You don't realize it until standing next to one.

I didn't realize it was that much bigger than the P-47. I've never heard of the P-47 serving carrier duty like the A-1. I guess it's a combination of further aerodynamic advances and larger decks. If you look for carrier operations clips from the Vietnam war you'll find A-1s being flown off decks at odd "advantageous" angles without catapults. This might be my favorite long format video clip, Field Assembly of the P-47: kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKOlz9Vtccu6eqQ.html
Tough aircraft indeed!
This aircraft was a monument at the base aerea of my city in Brazil. The city's name is Campo Grande - located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. . Today I have a dream! Who knows FAB4192 bring back home! Flying .... Who knows?
I think this is the same Skyraider I saw at the Oregon International Airshow in 2009, and that plane is the biggest single engine warbird I have ever seen. Really wished I could have gone to this event!
I worked on the A-1E when I was MDCorp in Tulsa in the late 60's. Huge aircraft for a fighter.

That's what I've heard. Spads can carry up to 8000 lbs of ordnance, in addition to its 4 x 20 mm cannons.
Thunderbolt and skyraider is double trouble if you're the enemy.
Great!
I love the old Jug
The p47 was a headache and a nightmare to many of germanys finest fighters and it could hold its own against the feared and hated focke wolfe 190 also the messerschmidt me 109. There are not too many of these great warbirds left but everyone loves just seeing these great planes of fame fly and return after a day of it.
P-47 is some plane..wow
That 47 sure is a pretty sight to behold
First off: Fantastic footage of 2 fantastic planes. Especially the P47 is one of my favourites of all time. But after seeing that Skyraider/Mustang midair collision I can't help but wonder is it really worth it to fly in close formation for some pretty pictures? Both these planes are absolutely gorgeous in their own right, and very precious too. Why take the risk?
Take off at 3:45 Nice video!
god that thunderbolt dosent even look like it would even get off the ground its amazing
The last to see action by the US Military yes, and yes they used them very effectively in Vietnam for ground attack roles but have been credited with a few air kills including a Mig-17/19(cant remember which. But some countries still use the P-51 for example in their air forces, though wayyyyy outdated.. its nice to see :)
JUGS forever!
Two of the best ground attack aircraft ever! But the A-1 looks more an A-10 Thunderbolt II than the P-47 Thunderbolt itself!!! I know their were from Republic/Fairchild...so the name after the P-47.
It was fast as hell in a dive because of its heavy weight, as well in straight level flight. For its time, before the Mustang, and Corsair came out, it was very formidable. After that, it was used for ground attack, and excelled in that role.
@joewaters1356
7 жыл бұрын
The Thunderbolt was designed after the Mustang and the Corsair. The P-47N equaled or exceeded the best P-51 models in all major performance categories other than low altitude maneuverability. The Thunderbolt and the Corsair were roughly comparable. The P-47 had higher speed and better high altitude performance, the F4U had a bigger bomb load and performed better at low altitudes. My favorite plane is the P-47 and my father flew Corsairs in the Korean war.
Both pilots are actually brothers, Greg and Allen Anders. They certainly know how to move those big radials around and make it look easy!
They should make an upgraded Skyraider as a COIN aircraft
p-47 and a sandy nice
Thanks for the nice video and for not adding shitty music.
Although a heavy fighter the P-47 was a nasty plane to deal with and the 8 .50 caliber machine guns made it feared by the germans no matter what they had in the sky to battle for the reich and the P-47 often came back even when it got badly shot up after doing its job. Quite a fighter in its time even now.

beautiful aircraft -not fair nickname "the flying barrell"!
Both planes are a joy to see and hear, but I'm wondering; Did they attack Pain Field ?
This Skyraider is originally an Navy AD-2N Korean war vintage night fighter/attack painted in USAF Vietnam Camo.
11:42 Nothing like the business end of a spad with all its hard points loaded. Solly Cholly.
was the A1 the last production piston driven plane to see action? I think they used them in Vietnam but not 100 percent sure? Great video thanks for posting.

great video what camera was used?
As cool as they are, one of the really cool details of the video for me is whenever Mukilteo Speedway is in the background, I get a flash of the top of my work.Yeah, I know, whoopee.
hell yeah, how do you think it was able to carry the massive payloads it used to?
Soft spot for the P-47 Jug and the late arrival F8F Bearcat.
As far as I know, it is not. The bubble canopy of the Mustang goes over a part of the fuel tank behind the cockpit. If you remove it, you can put a second seat in there instead. Thats why many Mustangs have this modification. You don't need that fuel tank anyway when flying at airshows.
Looks like the A-1 is carrying it's own weight in munitions.
Shit, You could probably drive a '47' through a building and come out alive , great vid, thanks. D
By the way, which submodel is the A-1? It looks like a later model. I know that one of the submodels was designed to look and act like a fighter as well as an attack a/c.
The skyraider A warbird of the korean war and vietnam too but suffered many losses at the hands of the vietnamese mig jet fighters like the mig 15/17. After the mid 1970's they were put into storage in AZ

Why were tanks such difficult targets for aircraft during WWII? During WWII, aircraft with unguided weapons were relatively inaccurate and carried very limited ammunition. Weapons quickly overheated and would likely jam if fired for more than a few seconds at a time. Aircraft were not suited to carry large calibre and high muzzle velocity AT weapons. Tanks and AFV units often had light and medium flak units protecting them. Weather and visibility were major considerations for all air operations.
In Detroit we had a Skyraider instead of a police helicopter.

Bolts were faster and actually pretty decent dogfighters (tho SpADs did shoot down three MiGs in Vietnam). SpADs could carry more bomb and rocket load than a B-17, and loiter over the target zone far longer. With four 20 mike-mikes and a pair of mini hosers, one could "street sweep" with an A-1.

Louis Tennent - Read up on the Battle of Saipan. The P-47s that fought there were delivered by flying them off the escort carriers that brought them from Hawaii.
It's no stretch to see why the warthog was named the thunderbolt 2. It's not particularly beautiful or streamlined; just like the p47 it's mean tough and overmuscled.
P47 was the fucking boss

The Skyraider is a flying truck compared to the 47. For me ,I take the 47 over the Mustang any day.

Hard to believe the USAF, US Navy, and US Marines still flew these well into the Vietnam War. The F-4 was the only other shared fighter or attack aircraft between all three military aviation branches up to now. It wasn't until some 40 years later the F-35 reprised that scenario again. And has it been a massive disappointment. :-(
Hhhmmm. X-wing Fighter. the Better. ✈😁😇😯😎
This aircraft was considered the ugliest aircraft back in the day, she was the A-10 of her day in WW2.
