Grosso Forever: Jeff Grosso’s Birthday Tribute | Skate | VANS

Спорт

The old adage has never rung more true: legends never die. In memory of beloved Vans family member and skateboarding icon, Jeff Grosso, some of Jeff’s closest friends come together to celebrate his life during a virtual birthday gathering.
Grosso leaves behind a prolific legacy of skateboarding history, having touched the lives of skaters of all ages and backgrounds with his cunning commentary, tenacious attitude, and enduring activism for preserving the core. The special ceremony will showcase never-before-seen-footage of Jeff by Greg Hunt from the Vans Propeller vert sessions, birthday edits by Six Stair Productions of personal video dedications from friends and family. Moderated by Chris Nieratko, the event will close with an intimate memorial gathering with respected skate names such as Steve Van Doren, Loveletters to Skateboarding co-creators Rick Charnoski and Buddy Nichols, John Lucero, Steve Olson, Steve Alba and Lizzie Armanto.
Despite the era of social distancing, Vans brings us all together for this unique and truly special moment - a heartfelt ode to many lives lived by a passionate man who loved skateboarding more than anyone. Jeff Grosso, you are missed!

It just dawned on me that one of Jeff’s biggest fears, was the day that he would be too old to still ride his wooden toy to the gas station for a pack of smokes, or whatever. The only good thing, if you can even say that about this unfortunate tragedy, is that he never had to go through that. He went out still skating. He was my favorite skater, and I will truly miss him.

Its weird, but I always kind of adapted Jeff as the older skate brother I never had. My second deck was his Angel & Demon graphic, I bought it in 87 at the Ambler Skateshop outside Philly. Learned how to skate on that deck up here in Vermont, which is pretty cool to reflect on now, that it was Grosso's deck that I learned on. Just loved his power and flow skating and his wiseass personality. I followed his experiences from afar, from Speed Freaks to the drugs, Black Label, and of course, the Letters. He was a true original, and although I never met him, he had an impact on my life, and I'll miss him. Rest easy, Grosso, you have created a legacy with the letters that is timeless. Now go skate.

Jeffs passing has had a profound impact on me, it’s taken me back to being 13 years old and getting my first skateboard, it’s taken me back to getting my first Thrasher mag and the Powell videos, seeing Grosso rip, then years later as I’d drifted away from skating I got turned on to the letters and wow, they brought it all back, he (Jeff) got me hooked again, interested again, I feel like I knew Jeff even though I’d never met him, it’s like he was a fellow skater so he is my buddy, because that’s whT it was like in the early days of skateboarding, anyone wearing vans and a skate t shirt was your friend as you were into the same thing, skateboarding!! A way of life. RIP Jeff Grosso and thanks for waking me up again🤘🤘❤️❤️🛹🛹🛹🛹

My grandad was 93, his bDaY is also in April, on the 11th. I ordered some of the Grosso shirts for my family members as soon as I saw they were available. They’ve all seen a love letter episode or two with me. The shirts came in today on Grosso’s bDaY and we will be proud to wear them in his memory. We will never forget Grosso, respect! Steve Van Doren, providing killer shoes to the world, Lucero, a skateboarding mainstay and Jeff's childhood friend, Lizzie, helping to bust the door down of the boys club, Rick and Buddy, skating with you growing up and c'mon Fruit of the Vine, Northwest, Deathbowl to Downtown, Salba, pool god, Olsen, your photo at the Brooklyn Banks alone is pure bad ass, and Nieratko, giving us Big Brother hilarity and championing New Jersey through it's lifelong hated status,, you all are amazing and I thank you. Grosso, his skateboading, and the letters will never die. Like many others who had never met him, I was badly shook when he passed. That's because he spoke to each each and every one us like a friend about something that we all love. His caustic norcal-like sarcasm, his bombast, the outrageousness of some of his opinions...that familiar feeling where he's gone too far. He was the original Brat. That attitude could sharpen diamonds. It could readily dispatch imposters. It could shape a culture. We needed it. It was powerful enough to mock death. And for all he did and will always continue to do...we love you Jeff
