This was a special time. This band does not exist anymore. The name is out there, 4 out of 5 of the musicians are the same. But THIS...will never happen again. This is a band in its first 5 years of formation - 3 to be factual. The raw energy and dedication to nailing that craft, the inspiration - all of that has gone. I was lucky to start catching these guys in Fall 2002, again in 2003, the NYE run at the Tabernacle in 2004 and 2 or three more times in 2005 and 06. After that, it just wasn't the same. All musicians want to leave the past behind for progress - if you don't your not a pure creative - but it just makes me wistful for another time in space, when this band was pure fire and bliss at the same time.

Well Said Friend, trying to explain to a new school Tribe fan the pure Fire that STS9 was back then is impossible...you have to have lived it. .

I’m sitting here re-watching this video for about the 5th time and I can absolutely understand what you both are referring to. Although I am not an og S9 guy (25+ shows from 2013-Today) I’ve been around the band and the fans enough to piece together a slight taste of what these times must have been like for you all, and man am I jealous. I can easily say this is my favorite band today, if I were a bit older they would have unquestionably been my favorite band 17 years ago too. There’s been so much talk (even some serious hating) of how this band isn’t what it used to be over the past 5+ years and I hear each and every one of you. This era would be more up my alley but It was while I was in middle school :-/ I am actually just coming off of a stellar 3 Night run @ Pisgah this past weekend and it only makes sense that the band has come as far as it truly has and has evolved in so many ways. That’s just what happens with time whether we like it or not. The fact they still play songs from 15-20 years ago and have added so much flavor and kept them relevant, tasty hits for the evolving fan base as a whole is something to admire. I obviously see the difference as a cohesive unit from the chemistry and nirvana from this video to the sets this past weekend. Obvious; but still a damn good band no matter what anyone’s mega-critical mind may think. I’ll never forget being at Murphy’s last show NYE 2013 and standing 5 feet directly in front of him in the front row the entire show sensing an energy about him that was just ‘off’. Almost a rage about him, or an anger of sorts. All while maintaining what I thought to be a fucking awesome display the whole show. Ended up getting a guitar pick from HB that show and was hooked ever since. Crazy to find out that was a show that ended an era and brought in a new age. Grateful to have seen Murph a few times and felt the energy he would transmit on stage and through the microphone when he would pump up the crowd. As much as all the old heads would prefer ^ this band, it’s just not rational. That’s what bothers me when people trash the band today and their ‘direction’ they’ve taken. That’s just being entitled if you ask me (not referring to you guys). In reality these guys with Alana even still have not strayed that far away from their musical roots even though people tend to act like it’s complete night and day. Had the pleasure of meeting the whole band in 2017 Zach asked the small crowd who purchased VIP package what song from Artifact we wanted to hear and then they gave us a fat 15 minute ‘Peoples’. You can definitely tell these guys genuinely care about their fans and why wouldn’t they? They’ve been doing what they love and doing it very well for years.

I couldnt agree more. Sector 9 were untouchable 2001-2004. Decline started in 05 and by 07 they were borderline unlistenable thru the end of the Murph era. They are an unpredictable, dangerous and altogether thrilling new frontier in this era. They really had no peer. I must admit, they've made alot of strides with Alana and while it ain't this cosmic mayan jungle mysticism, it's gotten to be pretty enjoyable again. But not the out of body experience that this was. Not even close. But it's not the sacrilege & steady devolution of 2005-2013 either.

@@bos07redsx Dude, I saw the Rolling Stones last summer - for the first time after listening to them as a Big Fan of some 40+ years (why? Thats is another thread, lol). Obviously not the same band as my favorite era (68-75), but it was a damn good show. I love that you love the band as is. And I'm sure if I didn't know STS9 before 2010, I would love them more now. Respect, kid. Nuff, nuff respect. Bless.

They still had the flowers when I saw em in '05 but this is awesome. So much unspoken chemistry between these guys it's amazing ..I agree with you Luke, still love it

Fuck i was lucky enough to skip the trey show and see these guys at the Roxy in Atl (can't remember if it was Halloween or the next day,saw trey in Asheville the previous night and wasn't feeling him) They blew my mind so we drove back to Asheville to catch them the following night at a place called the orange peel. From Asheville to Memphis we bumped their studio album nonstop. The guys in the pnuma trio lived next to me back in the day( 2002-2007 to be specific) But these guys had a few tracks where they mixed in some hiphop verses better than I ve heard anyone else do back then.

Sigh, Back when STS9 had an amazing, organic, tight and jazzy groove😢 They could’ve expanded so much more in this direction but they went with too many beeps and boops and a highly over exaggerated techno sound, losing all the feeling behind the music entirely. Murph ain’t there….haven’t gone to see them since the new bassist joined, but saw them at least 100 times in the years before that. I see they are back in ATL for NYE this year and so I listened to some recent live stuff. Couldn’t do it. It was horrible and it made my ears and everything everything else hurt, especially my heart 💚 This was the music of some of the best times of my life for years!!
