    I agree that in an ideal world, every Cairn should be hand stripped. When I got my Cairn, I searched high and low… even searched up to an hour away for someone who could do this. No luck. I brought my dog to 4 groomers before I found someone who clipped her gently and with the proper look (no conditioner). She has been with that groomer for 6 years. My dog will be 8 this year, and has not had any skin issues (diet is a key component in this, not just grooming methods). Unfortunately, I just found out that my groomer now has health issues and will no longer be grooming 😢 The search begins anew…

    @songbird857 no. I've never impulsively brought home a living breathing being without doing copious amounts of research. And it's only a life lesson if you learn from it. Once you realized that the grooming you were doing was incorrect and actually destroying your dogs coat, it would have made sense to use the many different resources available to learn how to correctly groom your dog. It's not difficult at all once you learn how to do it. I've been grooming my own dogs since I was twelve.

    If you clip too short you risk damaging the wiry top coat/guard hairs. The soft undercoat grows faster than the top coat so it’ll look funny. It’s best to use a long guard comb if you want to remove length from the body and not hand strip. You can do the same for the legs or hand scissor if not strip. For the head youd use small shears to clean up the stop and trim the eyebrows. I personally don’t like how his brows look.

    It does please never ever clip a Cairns wire hair. It damages the protective wire layer. It is only the undercoat that should be removed, which is a softer texture. Clipping cuts the wired hairs leaving the skin vulnerable to skin irritations infections and sensitivity.

    His hair was 'stripped' is hoe cairn terriers should be trimmed. Using a buzzer ruins the thick wirrey coat. And makes the hair thin and smooth. Many people still buzz cairns cause its easier, or cause they don't know. But stripping keeps the coat healthier and fuller.

    Norm Appleton, if you sheer a dog with undercoat then you destroy the upercoat and the undercoat gets way thicker. That leads to a less good air circulation through the foor witch leads tho the dog being huter. (Pleas vergife me spelling) If you reed a little bit you do not trimm you terrier for estethiks but for their own well being.

    Loretta the original hey there. I'm looking into caring for a Cairn Terrier once I'm sure I'm responsible enough. I'm just now in the grooming research hahaha! I've seen videos of people hand stripping them but never seen one groom the laws where I'm sure their coat grows...how do they hand strip their paw area? And the face, really just hand strip everything??

  • @lorettatheoriginal9265

    @lorettatheoriginal9265

    Good question--I am sure that they clip the hair between the pads on the bottom of their feet--but I believe they are stripped on the top. I also believe there is a teeny bit of clipping around the rump--but the rest is stripped--including the face, neck etc. My little brindle has never had her coat cut--she was stripped from the beginning and she still loves the groomer. The one thing my groomer recommended is to not waiting too long in between strippings--that way it is less time consuming and probably less painful (initially) to get a full, heavy and overgrown coat stripped. Hope that helps.

  • @lorettatheoriginal9265

    I know that my cairn baby's face is hand plucked--not sure about the paws, but then she doesn't have a ton of hair growing out of the pads. It may be because we walk outdoors so much. The thing that happens when they are clipped, is that their coat gets ruined--they lose the waterproof characteristic when that hair is cut as opposed to stripped.
