[NOTE: This video was originally published in June 2019.]
What started as a way to feel safe while skateboarding around Venice Beach blossomed into an inclusive, nearly 200+ community meet-up for women of all ages to pursue skateboarding. This is GRLSWIRL (Girl Swirl), a sisterhood turned full-fledged organization that rallies women to help communities in need.
Founder Lucy Osinski wanted a fun way to get women on wheels to unleash their inner badass. Soon enough, she had successfully recruited dozens of women who were gliding the streets of Venice Beach. Scared that her organization would get caught up in the influencer craze, she steered the group to focus on philanthropy and ways to better their local community through charity work and mentorship.
GRLSWIRL has proudly given wheels to women helping women. So far, thousands of dollars has been raised for local charities, mission trips to communities in need organized, and kids and women of all ages have taken up the sport of skateboarding.
Learn more about Venice Beach's GRLSWIRL in this interview with founder Lucy Osinski.

    This is great!!! Love seeing women/ girls get outdoors and do things that are physically challenging! It builds coordination, strength, self worth, confidence, and teamwork. Women/ girls that participate in sports/ physical activities tend to do better in school, feel better about themselves, seek higher education, less chance of abusive relationships, more confident about themselves and realize what they are capable of accomplishing!

    This is SO COOL. I need to come and find you guys. I live in the UK, Devon and started skating now, with my pintail longboard for the first time at 25! I LOVE IT SO MUCH and the confidence and self belief it has opened within me is crazy. I feel like anything is possible on that board. It’s medication and flow and more than I every thought it could be 😍🙌💃❤️

    My sister and I plan to practice inline skating at a skatepark and we do feel a bit uneasy going there. It's always filled of boys, some of them with cam... Not all of them have a mature mindset and they'd respond not in a good mannered way. I also don't appreciate the stares and being talked about or being filmed. Mind your own business, skate.

    I grew up in SM and Venice was my stomping grounds 1970' and 80's skating and boogey boarding. I can totally relate to the intimidating atmosphere being male dominated. There is strength in numbers ladies and you are watching out for each other. Safety is paramount down there. Your passion to pass it down to the next generation is what it is all about. Blessings to you all:)

    I already know people with justifien critcal opinions will be called haters. It's just how fubar the conversation on the whole subject is. I feel like we live in times where the most loud morons will get their way, despite what most of people or science/studies are saying. For the record I personally don't have anything against women skating or in any sports for that matter. I just don't see it as a issue or at least we have way bigger issues at the moment, even without the virus. I can come with only two professions I would prefer to be served by a man. The first is urologist, I just beleave men have naturally more experience in that field. I do beleave that most women feel same about gynecologists. The second one is fire fighters. This comes just down to physiology. If women can pass the same tests, then I don't care, but I rather not die on fire, just because the fire rescue person was not able to do their job, beeing of what ever gender. These kind of inequality issues should be solved with upbringing, edjucation and by giving every body equal chance. Not by lowering standards for some and forcing stupid genre quotas.

    Maybe people are "mad" because it's a ridiculous strawman argument. Good skaters respect good skating. If you want to skate, just do it. There are no men out there ripping girls off of skateboards.

  • @__Andrew

    @__Andrew

    @@privateuser7 Good job not watching the video. It might not be true for you and your group, but the guys she was running into were overly aggressive and giving her unwanted attention when she just wanted to be left alone and skate. That is why she got this group going, so she would feel more comfortable skating in public areas where she has had a bad experience before. Literally the comment under this main one is from a girl skater who has shared he own experiences with guys being too pushy around her and making her feel uncomfortable when she just wants to go out and skate. So, just because its not _YOUR_ personal experience does not mean its not someone else's, and it does not make this a "straw man". Because nowhere in the video does she say "all men" or "all male skaters". She specifically says the ones she encountered where she likes to skate. Get.Outside.Your.Bubble.

    'Felt so not safe in the skate scene with men everywhere?' So dissapointing that you would frame it like that. Skaters have put up with prejudice since the beginning, so go for it, insult the men, and women, who created the most inclusive sport in the world, and kept it alive when it was purely hated by people like yourself, before you came along and made it so cool and interesting.

Guys usually don't make fun of girls for skating, they are actually impressed if a girl can reach or surpass their level. That's due to their low expectations but whatever. If they make fun of you it's because you're truly bad at it and that's the same for any gender

I think what people get annoyed with is people like these idiots that just come in and take over, not knowing the kind of customs and courtesies of a skatepark and when the inevitable clash happens they feign victimhood. “Oh you don’t like girls skating in your park!?” It’s the same with parents who just drop their 6 yr old kids off to use the ramps like slides.. it’s the same exact thing.

    I don’t know what Venice beach is like…but growing up in bc, Van and Vic, we always had and welcomed new female skaters. I don’t know the male skaters you hang out with but in my experience, all skaters are welcome to other skaters. Good for you for trying to start a club ,but please don’t say that girls don’t skate and male skaters are evil pigs. Keep up your mission, but if you talk with other skaters you will find a community not defined by gender but for the love of the sport.
