Grizzly bears finding the foothills home in Alberta, Canada!

Grizzly bears in Alberta are branching out from the mountains, where they were pushed and hunted to many decades ago. As their numbers somewhat rebound, bears are once again returning to the foothills and prairies in the province. On the flats, the food sources are much better than they are in the mountains and at higher elevations. The bears can often add another month or longer to their season being able to forage for food. With cutlines providing the path out of the hills, they are able to easily travel to areas of open canopy and great plains of Alberta.

Beautiful family! I couldn’t help but notice that the one cub seemed much larger than it’s siblings. (Unless it was just the angle we were seeing it at?) What is the possibility that THAT cub is a male?

No all these were females. But the one cub is 3 years old, the other two are just yearlings. The older cub got chased off as a yearling and didn't get back with mom till the following fall at two years old. By this time she had two brand new cubs. We were surprised to see her allowing it to remain as a 3 y/o.

@@TheBearGuyCanada Wow, I did see examples of a black bear family doing that (Hope and Faith...unfortunately Hope got killed soon after she got emancipated) but not with grizzlies. Bear family is sth we do not fully understand. They even adopt a stranger's cub which many thought impossible.

@@TheBearGuyCanada Ah..Okay…Thank you for answering! Poor baby! Amazing that it was able to survive on its own and then to have mom allowing her to stay after being reunited, is truly amazing, especially if it was the mom that chased her off. I guess we will never 100% fully understand everything they do and/or why!

@@TheBearGuyCanada Oh my! I was going to mention the same thing about that bigger cub! She let her back in? Amazing! She probably would not have if the cub were a he yes??

Hard to say, but at 2.5 years old I'd expect a male cub being a little more independant but that would be speculating.
