Grilled Kala, Unicorn Fish - A tradition of growing up in Hawai'i - Kimi Werner Recipe

In this episode, we pay tribute to the simple ways of the old days and honor the Unicorn Fish, also known in Hawai'i as Kala. This fish tastes exceptionally succulent when grilled with it's leather-like skin on. Served with butter, garlic and lemon, it actually tastes very similar to lobster! Fun tips and scenes of spearfishing and cooking -but most importantly, an ode to a delicious fish that is very often overlooked!

Love Kala, grew up eating it because it’s so kid friendly and lots of meat, the old school loves da shoyu Hawaiian chili pepper style. When I was fresh out of high school I moved to country and did a lot of board diving at surf spots, When I shot Kala’s some of my new friends would laugh at it and say “ das rubbish” I cooked it on da grill, put all da meat on a platter and covered it with garlic butter, told da boy’z it was lobster and they loved it, i let them know it was Kala and actually had to show them the Kala skeleton for proof😂 They all praised Kala from that night on.😍🍻

I feel like my local friends betrayed me lol. They always told me this fish was Ulua when I lived there. Some of my fondest memories were fishing for these off of Mā‘ili Point. Sometimes the tourists got curious sometimes they were rude. Sometimes a bunch of locals would just join me and I'd go get more fish for the fire and when I got back there would be beer and more food and a tent and I'm part of some family. Now I'm back home in Palau and I kinda miss hawaii

@@TheJerkmeoff Hi 😉 we fish this fish when the sea is rough we use wire leader because of it's teeth and they can cut mono easily best catch in shallow due to sharks or when they dive into corals. We call the seaweed (chiaguan) leafy with small like grapes. They are other spieces of fish that eat this seaweed. hangun ( orange tail unicorn fish) and guili don't know the English name for this fish.

I would see 10 lb ones swim in front of my face and not even want it. You made me realize that our roots is what make us. Thanks for opening my eyes. Next time Kala for dinner.
