Denis Sneguirev's documentary about Yuri Grigorovich (born 2 January 1927 in Leningrad), The Golden Age, takes its name from the last great ballet choreographed by Grigorovich for the Moscow Bolshoi, which he led from 1964 to 1995. His 31-year tenure at the healm of one of the world's most prestigious companies coincides with the golden age of soviet ballet.
Adored by some, vilified by others, Grigorovich was nicknamed the 'Tsar of the Bolshoi'. He created several of the iconic ballets which were to bring his troupe fame in the Soviet Union and also internationally, at a time when dance was used as a propaganda tool in the delicate political relations between the West and the East. Spectacular productions like Ivan the Terrible and Spartacus, which combined ancient epics with great national frescos, were discovered by western audiences for the first time. Grigorovich's art was at its best in these ample narratives, where he exploited the strength and virtuosity of his dancers, who were at this time unrivaled in the west.
Denis Sneguirev's film addresses Yuri Grigorovich directly, in the form of a letter. Interspersing interviews with artists and colleagues of Grigorovich we look back over the career of this dancer and choreographer, which from its origins in Leningrad, and later in Moscow, would bring him international renown. The director also includes several extracts of Grigorovich's ballets, set in context with the history of Soviet Ballet and with history in general.
Throughout his career Yuri Grigorovich was a man of contrasts and paradoxes. Some reproached him for pandering to those in power, and yet he was never a member of the Communist Party. Should we view this controversial man as an icon? As a living monument? A despot? Without entering into polemical territory, Denis Sneguirev's film allows us to discover the many sides of a complex man, the artistic influence he exerted over a period of three decades, and the heritage he leaves today to the world of dance.

A great choreographer... meh. Fair at best. His versions of classics are middlebrow to mediocre and he has a rather unimaginative sense of movement. The Legend of Love and Stone Flower haven't held up especially well either. Grigorovich is wonderful at grandiose staging and coming up with theatrical concepts. Honestly, I think he would have been been better if he'd worked on something like Broadway musicals. But how come no one ever talks about his time at the Kirov as a dancer (it seems like a forbidden topic) and, especially, how he was married to Alla Shelest? I would like to see one single photo of the two of them together... it's as if she was erased out of his life.

Great choreographer, but as the Bolshoi ballet manager sucked out lots of blood out of many dancers. The only reason Alexander Godunov defected was Grigorovich who didn't let him dance because Godunov was Plisetskaya's dance partner. Typical dictator and tyrant who couldn't stand any criticism.

I can't believe you didn't show his favorite dancer whom he brought to Bolshoi when he was 18 because he saw something very special in him, Nikolai Tsiskaridze... how unfair. It's like he didn't exist.

Although Nikolai Tsiskaridze does not appear in the trailer for the documentary, he does appear in the actual film.

Thank you. I already ordered it anyway. I have listened to Nikolai so many times talk about Grigorovich, they had a special relationship. It was Grigorovich who said : Put this Georgian on top of the list (for Bolshoi) . I just watched Golden Age ballet from 2007 and Nikolai was fantastic, he stole the show, as always,

And during the curtain call when Grigorovich came ot the two of them were holding hands, you could see that special love, how Nikolai was tender trying to help him and hold him, he seemed frail.

I don't believe the pathological Tsiskaridze, a lawyer without integrity ....has caught his attention. There is politics above even the legend Y. Grigorovich
