    Since there's a grid on the beauty dish, that reflector won't get much light to bounce off, so it's a good idea to use a fill light from below instead of the reflector when using a grid so that you prevent those harsh shadows under her chin.

    You don't always need to fill in shadows. The grid was put there for a more dynamic shot, to show you the difference between no grid and when the grid is attached. It just depends on what you're going for. I agree the reflector is pointless with the grid on the beauty dish but the point there wasn't to fill in the shadows.

    I know this is an old video, but why one earth didn't you nail the exposure in all three demo shots so we could actually see the difference made by the grid? Otherwise though, a great idea to show people. Thanks

    Great video. I especially appreciate how thorough you explain your setup. Really nice. Comparing shadows and quality of light is always very interesting. But comparing EXPOSURES (as in "too bright") in this instance is not valid because it is up to the photographer to have a proper exposure metered for whatever particular light/modifiers are in place at the time the shutter is released. If different exposure settings are necessary then that is what has to happen. Or different power settings.

  • @KaiMattern
    @KaiMattern4 жыл бұрын

    At first I was wondering why you would use the silver side of the reflector, but as you added the grid, it became clear that there was so little light hitting the reflector that the silver side made sense. I was wondering about the settings: I can only guess that the studio was so bright for the video: iso 160 does not make any sense in my mind. 2.8, iso 100 and 1/3200 would be equivalent and maybe get you a tad more into optimal conditions for the sensor. I would have liked that you had explained why you chose these specific settings. But thanks for the nice comparison of the progressive build for the shot.

    Miguel, I really like how you explain the settings & steps in your videos...well done! But I did think the model's hair being blown under her chin by the fan was a little annoying and could have been easily corrected. Also, I agree with Charlie G. that the grid eliminated the use of the silver reflector and cast a shadow under her chin. Unless, of course that was intentional on your part and was the look you were going for here.

  • @blagovestzaimov3455

    with using grid from that distance, all you did, is to eliminate the reflector because of an angle of grid. It's not a bad idea to move the beauty dish a bit closer.

    Finding the angle of a grid isn’t complicated, it just requires a bit of math. It’s actually the same math as finding the angle of view of a lens, knowing the sensor size and focal length. With a grid you have the size of each square and you have the thickness of the grid. The simple diagram has a rectangle with the height being the thickness of the grid and the width being the size of each opening with two lines crossing which represent the light. The lines cross at the center, creating a triangle who’s height = 1/2 the thickness of the grid and who’s base is the size of each opening. That triangle is the angle of the grid. But wait, there’s more. I’m sure you’ve noticed that grids don’t give you the sharp edges that a snoot creates. That’s because you’ve calculated the angle based on a circular opening, the grid square has corners which are slightly larger than our model of the grid. Doing the math will accurately tell you about light fall off of the grid. Wouldn’t this be better than “I don’t know what the angle of the grid is”?

    With the reflector, Miguel complained that the image was over-exposed without the grid. As we know, grid cuts down the light output. Shouldn't he reduce the light for the case without the grid to yield a fair comparison? It is a confusing test that he did.

    I note that after you added the grid the reflector fill appears less noticeable and there is a strong shadow under the chin, like the first shot without the reflector. Was this an artistic choice or could you further increase the fill by angling the reflector and reducing the shadow? Great video. Thanks.

    Melvin Markowitz As the the grid stops the light from spilling, it also stops spilling on the reflector. Hence, the use of Beauty dish with grid is for more contrasty and dramatic portraits. While if you want more flattering soft light then you may want to chose a 5' octabox.

  • @k2jwd

    @k2jwd

    Urshit Oza: Thanks for the reply. I have a similar setup in my small home studio. I use the RapidBox Duo with the deflector plate, simulating a beauty dish. I also use the inner diffusion baffle and outer diffuser which softens the light, similar to a diffusion sock on a beauty dish. I also use a 40 degree grid to limit spill and better focus the light. I use a boom to shoot on axis like Miguel does in this video. I use a 40" white reflector angled about 30 degrees upward to reduce the shadows. Even with the grid in place there is sufficient fill for me to see the catchlight from the reflector in the subject's eyes. That's why I asked Miguel if he chose to not angle the reflector for creative/artistic reasons. Keeping it flat obviously stops the fill when the grid is in place. Some people like the strong shadow below the chin/mandible. Some prefer a flatter light without the shadow. BTW, I get a very flattering, soft light with my setup.

    I have to agree with you. I saw no metering with/without a grid and at least one stop of light would be robbed when using the grid. Also the reflector would have to be angled to accommodate the angle of reflection when the beauty dish is grided. Laying it flat will not kick any light upwards.

    Correct. You can see where the lights and reflectors are positioned (in the front anyway) by looking at the eyes. In the second shot, you can clearly see the main light at the top of her eye, and the reflection of the reflector at the bottom of her eye. After the grid was added, the reflection at the bottom of her eye is gone. The grid shot is more dramatic, but I would agree that most people would prefer a slightly less exposed version of the second shot with the reflected light in the bottom of the eye. There's a reason Westcott makes a very popular $250-300 eye lighter reflector.

    Sorry but inside, in low light, as I see in video, 1/5000 is just nonsense. Check with a light meter (or simply with camera) and for ISO 160 and F:2.8 a speed of 1/200 gives a pure black image. So ambient light is almost inexistant, and use of HSS in this situation is futile. What if flash does not support HSS? I think a good light knowledge can compensate lack of gear.

    You change your lighting BUT you did not meter??? Oh look it's darker you say Come on you meant to be teaching......

    I know, right? More interested in pimping gear than teaching IMO.

    first shots overexposed and the grid "cuts" the light from the reflector. This video is nonsense in multiple aspects...

    if you put the grid there is no light bouncing to the reflector.. therefore you can see almost the same result as the first shot.... facepalm category...

    What's with the lens not being secured to the tripod? Miguel bumps the camera and the camera and heavy lens flop back and forth as if they're just barely mounted to the tripod. And Miguel knows this because he moves his camera and lens around while he's shooting, even though the tripod is stationary and he hasn't loosened the head for camera movement. Why? I'd be worried about a very expensive camera/lens combination hitting the floor. If you need to move the camera, loosen the head a bit to permit movement, not let the camera flop around on the mount. Also, the reflector is basically doing nothing with the grid in place. It might be bouncing a bit of light from the subject herself but little else.

    If your photo is overexposed you can turn down the power of the flash... You ruined the comparison really.

    Beautiful model with a lot of patience. Good information but too repetitive. I could have started the video at the five minute mark and miss nothing.

    Without trying to make each shot the best it could be, this is not a valuable demonstration.

    I like the one where her eyes are straight on the best. At 2.8, the eye that is not closest to the camera gets softer

    You can buy equipment and learn to shoot, but it is not a fact that you will get a beautiful model to work with. Thanks
