Little Edie was absolutely thrilled that they were making her life story into a musical. She wrote about it.

I feel sad that Little Edie never found true love, she had so much to give, such enthusiasm, vitality and an enchantingly childlike joix de vivre which was never satiated. By the time her mother died, she'd developed such a distrust and cautious approach that she continued to distance herself from most people, which is a real shame. These women weren't crazy at all, just non-conforming eccentrics.

I saw this in NYC and it was really fantastic. Totally unlike any musical I've seen. Christine Ebersole was wonderful. If you have seen the whole show with her in it you have some idea the magnitude of the the role. This is only a small piece.

I re-visited the Grey Gardens DVD yesterday. I think the beauty of Christine's performance is that she didn't try to impersonate or mimic Little Edie in every respect (her speaking voice is fairly different), but nevertheless perfectly captures her spirit.

Actually in the documentary scene upon which this number is based, little Edie is wearing all black. Don't worry, she also has a number with the American flag in which she is decked out in red. Both Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson as Big Edie are scary good!

You mean Harvey Fierstien. Yes, he was the original Edna Turnblad in the Broadway musical of Hairspray, althouth sainstskittles is right in saying that Divine was Edna in the original 1980s movie and that Harvey Fierstein was in 'Mrs. Doubtfire'.

Like nickbigd said, the scene in the film where Little Edie is describing her "revolutionary costume" she wears an ensemble similar to what Ebersole is seen wearing in this clip. However, it's a dark brown color, not black.

Dummy: It's a musical. I HATE musicals, however, this (and the other bits I have withdrawn from this site) captures more dialogue and spirit from the Maysles doc than I ever dreamed possible. I, for one, am delighted. Let's just hope that the Hollywood version DOAs.

I have my bachelors in piano performance and pedagogy. Man, is this piano score difficult to execute. We recently performed this at a local theatre. I was Gould Strong and actually had to play some on stage...but the pit orchestra/rehearsal piano part..Haha! Just look at the pianist go in the back. It was difficult but a blast. I love this musical. So many memories.

You people know NOTHING about musicals. Just because it's a musical doesn't mean the story is used for laughs, there are plenty of genuinely tragic moments in the show. Even this number isn't MAINLY about laughs, as much as about Edie's personality and fashion sense.

The accent is a little off (too tight, and the medial R's are too strong), but the cadence is dead on. But why doesn't she wear a bright scarf? I haven't seen the production but little Edie always wore bright scarves.

@WLKCONSULTING The reason these women were so unique was because they came from a wealthy, socially elite background which they rebelled against, you cannot compare their story with any other and your attempt to play the 'race card' is inappropriate and cheap.
