That one's after the pickup upgrade, those sound good. The problem with the earlier Electromatics (I've got a heavily modded 5120) was those pickups just weren't right, real weak and anemic.
What a great review! No nonsense, just clear detail and good sound samples. Thanks!
One the best reviews I've seen in a long time. Extremely thorough and detailed. You don't skip on the shortcomings either. Subbed.

I'd like to hear more negatives if they're are any, YT videos seem to minimize issues. Also looked at the build on Gretsch that showed the insides of the guitars after I saw the tiny images in the video. I couldn't make them out so I went to Gretsch. There's no-way, no possible way that their solid bodies can be considered solid body guitars. They aren't even chambered. The whole thing is empty inside except for two supports near the pickups which make the guitar a single chamber or cavity. It doesn't have chambers, it is the chamber. Crazy.

Great detailed review, thank you! When my 5420 needed to be repaired I had to get a spare guitar to be able to rehearse (as I only owned one electic guitar - the one which just had gone to the luthier.) So I was looking for an affordable replacement. I played the 5222 at the shop and I just loved it and still do! What an excellent guitar, everything was great out of the box. I was a little worried about the nose diving but it isn‘t an issue at all to me. Just brilliant in sound and playability.
I have a left handed g5222 in midnight and love the sound, the fit and finish, and the Gretsch quality.
That is a phenomenally well presented doco on the gretsch. Superbly done. Thank you.

Amazing review! Thanks a ton.
Thanks for the video and the in-depth description of the Gretsch. I've been looking at them for a while trying to decide whether or not to purchase one. Like you, I've found some very redeemable qualities in this guitar. The chambered body will help alleviate the back pain that I get from my solid body guitar, and as I am aging that becomes a more pressing concern. I also love the look, the feel, and the sound, and as you described is different that what I have. I am going with the Bigsby version because I like the added textures it provides. Again, thanks for the video and Happy Gretsching!

Kudos for a great review! You must have put a lot of effort into it. It's very rarely seen these days. Bought 5232T recently. Treble bleed circuit on mine is only on the master volume and it really does a lot. Other volume pots don't have treble bleed (nor they should I think). Speaking of pot taper, I actually like it this way.

I recently bought one of these G5222 and the author of this video has done an honest review of this guitar. I agree with all his comments and observations; the G5222 has its quirks, its downsides (pots - which could be upgraded - and neck dive due to body design) but overall this guitar is stunning for the price. My example is a 9.5 out of 10 for fit & finish. Good job Gretsch and great job to Brooks on his honest view of this marvellous instrument.

Another great guitar review. I'm glad you're doing more. I'm relatively new to the Gretsch party. I got a G5441T Duo Jet a year and a half ago that was perfect except for some fret sprout that can happen to any guitar and I just added a G5220G Single Jet that is perfect. I agree that quality pots with a good treble bleed should be an upgrade. Pickups are adequate for the price but if the guitar came with top quality Filtertron or TV Jones pickups it would have added hundreds of dollars to the cost.

Con una correa ancha de cuero, que no deslice, la guitarra deja de cabecear......la mia también cabeceaba, pero con la correa ancha de cuero se acabó el problema
Just received a G5237 Electromatic Double Jet in surf green (sea foam) -- a Christmas gift from my bride. It is stunning. The fit and finish is stellar. The neck was chunkier than expected but comfortable and easy to play. Very resonant body -- the strings ring out for days. The pickups are twangy and sparkly. That's "Gretsch" sound. Feels like a guitar that should cost much, much more. The only negative I could find: The frets on high E side of the neck from the 12th fret on up are a tad sharp. Otherwise, the guitar is a WOW!

Other than my minor confusion on that, thanks for the awesome review!!!

Hello Local M, what I was saying is that the color on the neck is solid and not a stain where you see the grain in the wood on some of the colors.
String this buddy with 11, 11.5, or even 12s. EQ it to accentuate the breathiness of the chambered body. And it's pure gretsch. Little bit of plate reverb or something. And clean clean clean. No boost needed. Great scale length for Johnny marr. EQ with a slope that rolls off lows, chorus, reverb, whatever
Thanks the the review. The neck shape on the Gretsch website says it’s a Thin U? Is this correct?
@airtimedesign
3 жыл бұрын
I don't feel the U Shape so much. I like the G5222 neck a lot. It feels flat and wide to me. The U shape would indicate more shoulder. It may have that but I don't notice it.
Still playing this? I just got one the limited edition with the Filtertrons and in Shell Pink. Love it but there is a slight rattle from the saddles. Also there was some fret buzz because the action was set insanely low.
Bought the same guitar earlier this year for my first electric
how do these pickups compare to the blacktop filtertrons?
what overdrive are you using for the drives? sounds great
Another trick for balance: stick on wheel weights in the switch cavity.

I'm certainly not a virtuoso, but I have been playing for over 40 years. I have over a dozen all US-made Fenders, Gibsons, and Rics that I purchased over the decades. I also have a Japanese-made Gretsch 6120. I'm older now and can buy just about any "players" guitar I really want (within reason of course), but I'm happy to save $ if I can. I've tried several Chinese-made guitars in the past with the hopes that they were just as good, but I sold every one almost instantly. They were all, "I'll never pick this up given the other instruments I have" guitars. But the 5222 was surprisingly quite solid quality-wise. And I get a sound from it that is just unique enough that I want to play it. (Admittedly, I saw the Back in Black tour in 1980 in Knoxville, TN and loved Malcolm ever since, so take it with a grain of salt) This review is pretty spot-on from my experience. And if this was my first guitar, it would definitely be far more than enough to inspire me.

"You're buying a guitar because it sounds good and it plays good" - shouldn't that be the only reason to buy a guitar in the first place? Who cares about "reselling" them, why would one worry about reselling something they love? (they sholdn't do it) Thanks for the informative and honest review!

That advice is in relation to the Bigsby equipped guitars staying in tune. The heavier string gauges help with tuning stability. I have 11's on my G5422TG.

@@chrisdee5032 Thank you.
Hi, Mr. Brooks! I am going to want one of these guitars, most likely the natural finish to get closer to my idol Malcolm. Great review indeed, thanks so much! One question to you sir: when you played CRUNCH, what exactly do you mean? Is it a particular set up in the amp or has to do with the instrument controls? Thanks for your feedback! Alessandro

Hello Alessandro and thank you for the comment. "Crunch" is just driving the amp slightly harder. Since I recorded the audio samples direct I used an amp sim to get the amp sound. The model was a VOX AC 30 with the gain pushed a bit. The guitar was wide open on all samples. The difference in the 3 setting of "Clean" "Crunch" and "Gain" is just how hard you push the amp. ie how loud you set the preamp. Hope that helps! Please subscribe I would appreciate it!

When I record the sound samples I record the guitar direct to an Apogee Audio interface and into Logic Pro software. I use 3 different amp sims and preset ups in Logic. The first is a clean sound, the crunch is a little dirty and the third I kick it up a few more notches.
Bo knows
Fender player/vintera or Gretsch electromatic series, which has better value for money ? Btw great review!

Hey Adam, for me the Gretch 5220 at $499 is the best value and the best sounding guitar out of the 3 you mentioned. The Squire CV is the only thing for less and it is a contender but I still like the 5220. It has a big bright sound to it and they are finished and play really well.

@@airtimedesign Thank you very much for reply, it seems that in this price range electromatics are great choice
Would you compare to a standard tele tone wise?

The Tele is known for a bright crisp twang. The Gretsch is more rounded and fuller. Still has a twang but not as bright as a Tele. The Gretsch has more body and rich full sound but not as dark as a Gibson Humbucking guitar. It hits a nice happy medium between Fender and Gibson. Does that help?
The scale length is pretty short, right ? Shorter than a Gibson, if I'm not mistaken.
I recently bought one of these G5222s, in Ocean Turqoise. Great looking guitar, great playing guitar (if a bit top-heavy) with great sustain, and superb tones....UNPLUGGED! The Broadtrons on this thing are horrendous. If you are coming (like me) from a vintage PAF equipped Les Paul, you will be seriously disappointed in the clarity of the pickups, even though they do sound "Gretschy", they are very muddy to my ears. You can sort of get around that by upping the gain on your AMP and then they sort of come into their own, but this guitar is not meant to be played at high gain. Or at least I don't need high gain sounds out of it. I want to get the clean\crunch breakup on my tube amp simply using the attack of my right hand to control the breakup of the sound, but with the Broadtrones in this guitar, I get a muddy definition-less tone. I am now looking to invest into a TV Jones bridge pickup (but really any filtertron will probably do) to get some better sounds out of this guitar, so buyer beware. 500 Euros will only get you so far. Still for that price, and the price of some new pickups, it's not a bad investment.
