Gregor Halenda's Custom BMW R100GS Dirtbike

Stephen Clark recently met up with Gregor Halenda in the desert of Southeastern Idaho to get a closer look at this highly unique motorcycle. This one-off R100GS is far from an ordinary resto-mod. It's fully custom and it was surprising to ride. Watch the video to get all the details straight from the builder as well as Stephen's impressions after riding it.

Beauty! Wish this type of bike was produced by BMW. No-nonsence, minimalistic rally look and feel. And things like proper suspension, clearance, everything for long distance off-road stuff. Looks so inviting to jump on and ride. Great job Gregor!

I'm not a fan of BMW'rs , but ... I have to tell you : this bike is a BEAUTY ! It really is ! This is the Paris - Dakar edition that BMW should have been selling to the public , instead of that new odd looking GS 's ... If there was a chance to build one myself ... this is exactly how it should look like , down to the smallest detail : tank, exhaust, suspensions, upper and lower frame ... to be honest, you should think about making and selling an affordable kit for the public .. so that everyone has a chance to make his own GS ! But maybe you want to keep it one of a kind , and do not have the desire to duplicate it ...

I agree with you. Definitely the most beautiful GS I've ever seen. But maybe these changes are so drastic and radical, that it would be too complicated to make it into market. I would prefer some detail info with whole process and changes step by step and drawings with all custom made parts so people could modify their own bikes close to this build.

...I had to chuckle a little when I guy like this can make something that BMW should have considered a long time ago - don't get me wrong, I love my 600lb R1200GSA (full tank and panniers) but I do wish it was a whole lot lighter especially when I have to pick it up after an off-road get off - of course, BMW has toyed with certain models over the years that were more off-road oriented but they just did not seem to get it quite right... I think we all had hoped the F850GSA would have been a breakthrough model but instead, it is very nearly as heavy as it's R1250GSA brother at roughly the same horsepower as my older R1200GSA - I also know that the Euro4 thing is a HUGE headache to deal with for makers but KTM, as an example, still managed to succeed where everyone else has failed with their new 790 Adventure R - lighter, fast, well equipped, plenty of power for the weight - will it be BMW reliable, probably not but it will likely be typical of KTM which better than the Japanese models but not as tough as BMW's lineup... In any case, thanks for sharing this rather inspiring story!

Thanks for the comment. Your thoughts mirror mine exactly. I think what we have all loved about the old airheads is their simplicity. I want to keep that but bring the performance to a more modern level. This bike works great but there's still a lot of room to make the next bike better. My goal is sub 350lbs (remove another 50 from where this bike is) and another 10hp which should get me close to a power to weight ratio of the 1200GS but in a bike that is 200lbs less. That will make a world of difference.

@@sparqqling good point - in my excitement watching this I (and most others it seems) totally forgot about the HP2. It was probably just too expensive but then so is this one if you were to buy one from the factory with those tanks. I just saw an HP2 for sale in Calgary or somewhere and would love to buy that if I didn't already have a KTM 990 Adventure.

Thanks you!! I will agree it is not finished but crash bars, as they are routinely deployed on airheads, are quite useless. I hear this a lot but I've never heard this from someone who's actually crashed an airhead. Sadly I can say I've crashed many of them lots of times and because of my quite extensive experience have decided they're not worth the trouble. I recently crashed this bike VERY hard, slamming it into a rocky road at almost 4mph and I didn't even crack the valve cover. Motor is fine.

This is a hard argument to counter. You're talking to a person who has been restoring a Midcentury house for going on 6 years - logic like that doesn't work for me. I have a KTM 500EXC so it's not like I don't get a modern bike and I'd like to have a 790 but if you follow that logic to it's natural conclusion we would have no hot rods, we'd have no cafe racers and no one would ever fix up old bikes or cars. There is something intrinsically satisfying about an old air cooled boxer and making one work beyond what you can imagine is extremely rewarding and scratches an itch for that era. There's a reason Singer Porsche's have a 2 year wait list and yet start at over a half million dollars when you could just go buy a new 911 for less than a fifth of the cost of a Singer. As for engine guards - totally over rated. I've slid a boxer down the track at 70mph with no more than scrapes to the heads. I've smacked it off rocks and trees and I've never damaged the engine outside of a cracked valve cover. They are bomber.

Thanks a lot! I picked up this project half done and I've changed a lot of it in the process because what I got didn't work. In many regards I've taken this bike as far as it can go so the next step is to start a new bike that will pick up where this one leaves off. Imagine this bike but with more power (85 vs the current 70) and less weight (330lbs vs the current 400) and you will have an idea of my next bike. I'm starting it this winter and will document the entire process on KZread. Stay tuned and if you subscribe I'll get around to posting the story as I go and answering the questions as well. It should be pretty interactive.

Whoa, whoa, whoa @@Rust_valley_adventures This bike gets ridden and HARD. But crashing in rocks is something I really try to avoid. That said I did crash it off a big jump after snapping swingarm on the landing. It sucked but the only damage to the bike was a scratched valve cover... and of course the swingarm. I'm redesigning the swingarm so that won't happen again and I'm going to keep riding it to find the limits.

I would like to put a minimal skid plate on but I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I've got about twice as much travel on this bike as your Bumblebee. I have almost 12" and my engine is lifted almost two inches. Baring a massive rock off a jump it will be impossible to bottom the cases. I recently jumped the bike hard enough to snap the swingarm and despite fully bottoming the case did not touch.
