Great info as always. Don’t be so hard on yourself about the black oak. Black oaks here in Missouri have been dying off rather quickly for various reasons over the last few years, and you might not have caused it.

That hickory tree is a beaut. We hope it won't be hurt. Are you thinking about raking off the surface soil a bit just to clear off some of the manure? It would be worth a lot as boards if, next year, you decide it won't make it. I'm surprised they all bunched up there for 6 hours.

It has already recovered, grass is growing where there was mud. Time, it is a huge factor. They were only there for 6 hours. Plus the area under the tree was beautiful forage before they go there and grouped up under it.

These things won't happen in a silvopasture or an orchard, would it. It's happening because the tree is alone and every cow is getting under it.

"It took a hundred years to grow and you [hypothetically] kill it in 2 days." trees are great providers but they do demand respect to live their life well to do so! براہمداغ made a good point maybe more trees there as silvopasture would buffer the impact on each of the trees? Establishing trees among lifestock takes some time (and fencing) though, would love to hear more of your thoughts about that Greg.

I wonder if you pruned the tree up the shade wouldn't be concentrated directly under the tree. I know in our feedlot the taller the shades the better because the shades area moves more

So Greg, I have a few acres of 10 year old cut over that has grown back to pole stage. Would mobbing cattle up like this be an effective way to kill those small trees and let sunlight get to the ground to grow forage?

How far out do you put the wire from the tree? Like around the drip line?
