Greenworks Pro 80-Volt vs 60-Volt Dual Blade Mower // A Raw Power Comparison

This is a power comparison between the Greenworks Pro 60-Volt 25-Inch mower and the 80-Volt 21" mower.
For two years now I've ben saying the GW 80V mower is the strongest battery mower I've tried and I've demonstrated this a few times on this channel but this comparison is one of the more frequently requested videos I've gotten from my viewers.
As mentioned you can see the following battery mower videos I've made previously:
► Mower Blade Tip Speed Explained: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ia2p1Lyzmqjcnso.html
► Battery Mower Specs Make Strength Vague: kzread.info/dash/bejne/l4qiuMuPdLqeo9o.html
► Things I Have Liked About Using Battery Mowers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qIWusLGSqdyroaw.html
Here are the two Greenworks mowers I featured in this video:
► GW 80V 21" Mower: www.amazon.com/Greenworks-Cordless-Batteries-Included-GLM801601/dp/B01CA4Q2QY/?tag=turfmechanicyt-20
► GW 60V 25" Mower: www.greenworkstools.com/pro-60v-brushless-25-inch-lawn-mower-2531502
Greenworks also has a lot of lower-priced "entry-level" mowers that I hope to be able to experiment with in the coming years. I'm drawn to many of their tiny mowers in the 13" and 14" widths.
Neither of these mowers have the best suction though so if bagging capabilities are important to you then check out the following video where I compared suction on a bunch of different battery mowers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/g4qe2bxqc6TboaQ.html

Great comparison! The lack of side discharge is a deal breaker for me. My favorite way to mow thick Bermuda. While I own the 60v Toro mower, I opted for the 80v Greenworks pro leaf blower. Just could not pass up the deal I got at Costco. It is a beast and very impressed with the quality and performance so far but the real test will come this fall!

Hey I don’t know why GreenWorks isn’t never listening to reviews like yours or others. The height should be able to go higher , side chutes are very popular because it helps with discharging taller grass so machine doesn’t big down to a halt. They should take these into serious consideration when upgrading new models. Excellent video

On Turbo, the 21-inch Greenworks 80V and 60V 2nd-gen mowers run at a constant no-load speed of 3200 rpm vs. as-needed 2800 rpm. The motor that turns their blade has a max output of 1500 watts. The 80V and 60V 25-inch models = 1100 watts. In Spring 2022, Greenworks Commercial introduced an 82V 25-incher with a more powerful motor. I would guess that its motor is one-third more powerful (about 1470 watts) because their new 82V 21-incher is one-third more powerful (2,000 watts).

I had the Toro Timemaster and it too had the dual blades that rotated counter to each other and it was just too efficient to mulch for grass that was wet or slightly overgrown. If you cut your grass every 4 days when it was dry, this type of mower probably would give you the best cut.

Does the 25" Mower has two or one electric motor? If it has only one motor for the two blades that could explain why is bogging down. The electric motor is not strong enough for moving the two blades in that jungle.

Good point about the faster blade tip speed on the 21" vs the25". That alone is worthy of some serious thought. But I guess I'm not sure why you'd expect a 60V machine trying to mow a wider path to do better than an 80V mowing a narrower path in this brute force test? Assuming the cut quality is the same (and maybe it isn't), isn't the main selling point of the 25" the wider path rather than raw power?

Really a great informative video, Thanks. How would the Pro 60 fair out cutting a normal lawn not what you demonstrated here. I have a small piece of property (under 1/4 acre) sloped on one side and I am looking to buy a battery mower. Another thing on my mind is whether or not I really need a self propelled. I have a 21" Honda gas self propelled I am currently using and it is more of a pain here than on my previous home with larger flat property to mow. If this piece of property was flat it would be a no brainer, non self propelled. I'm not a kid and don't want to bust my butt mowing!

  • @TurfMechanic

    @TurfMechanic

    2 жыл бұрын

It does pretty good if you cut regularly, small blades don't leave circles in the lawn but mulching leaves clipping strips so it looks better when you bag. The selfpropelled is worth it if you've got a slope. I'm young and strong but I always use self propelled on my hill, not always on my flat lawn though.

  • @TurfMechanic

    2 жыл бұрын

I'd have to try it to be sure but my guess is it would clog less because it's probably a better shaped deck and the blade itself is wider meaning the tip of the blade is most likely traveling faster even though the rpm is likely lower...also you are right, the deck is covering less material at once too so it's probably going to clog less. Until GW sends me one for free though I'll just have to speculate because I told my wife I wouldn't buy a new mower again until black friday this year! :D

Ordinarily id bag overgrown grass that can be discharged but for this experiment I decided to mulch with both mowers to easily show how quickly they bogged down and stalled side by side.

I decided to get the 80v Kobalt mower, it's very similar to this because Kobalt's larger power tools ( 40v+) are made by Greenworks So far so good only stalled once when I was trying to do so was looking at the 40v as I already have some tools in that line but decided to go for the more power, eventually planning on getting the chainsaw and maybe snowblower as well

  • @TurfMechanic

I've never tried the Kobalt mowers but I've heard similar things from others about them being similar to the GW mowers. If you do have the 80V greenworks I'm quite happy with my 80v Greenworks snowblower, the wider intake chute version though at 22". It does well for average snow depths but if you do get regular snow at 10" or more I'd probably look to the two-stage blowers which I think GW doesn't make (yet).

Taking into account the overlap for the 25 inch mower but not for the 21 inch mower and then calling it only a 20% difference is extremely biased.

  • @TurfMechanic

    @TurfMechanic

    2 жыл бұрын

I didn't think I needed to go into the math. 60v machine has a 24" cut path minus overlap of 2" your stripes are 22" wide. 80v machine is 19 7/8" wide cut path, subtract 2" overlap and your stripes are 17 7/8" wide. The difference is 4 1/8" extra width from the 60v unit. 4.125 divided by 17.875 is 23.1 meaning you cover 23.1% more ground with the 60v unit which is more than the 18% I guessed at in the video on the fly. When I use the 60v mower though I have to cut much slower and clear more clogs so it never actually speeds up the session. That's just been my experience. My bias is based on using both mowers and forming experience based opinion, im fine with that. Thanks for bringing this up, others probably wondered the same thing. 👊

Mowing large thick grass with weeds and what not. It's a no brainer why the two mowers struggled. Cause you tried to 'Mulch' with them. Plus using a Highlift blade on the twin 12.5 aka 25inch 60volt version. Mulching is more for already well groomed grass that you're just gonna take a inch or two off so it can slice the trimming even finer. But a THICK system is gonna clump all that grass into the mower's cage area that it's gonna struggle to spin the blades with so much stuff inside itself. You never never mulch with thicker grass. Period. Bag or maybe Side-discharge. If you side discharge run the land over twice to get a finer cut for the mulch that gets thrown out. That way you can cut it even finer. But it's always bagging when you're getting thicker and taller stuff. Mulching is never a option for super thick and tall grass. Even gas mowers will struggle with this setup. That's why you see lots of lawns be mowed with BAGS on these cases. Plus the Highlift blade is ment for throwing the grass into the bag or out the side discharge better because it sweeps the grass around. It's not ment for mulching. Not to mention the 25inch 60volt is 2-3x MORE powerful then the 21inch 80volt. The motors are better and spin faster. But the blades are only 12.5inch on both sides so the cage of the mower under is smaller but wider to take a wider zone. But the cage are only 12.5inch each. the 21inch has a larger zone of cage and size deck. That's the only reason why it made it farther is because it had more room to pile the grass up compared to the two 12.5inch cages under the deck that couldn't take much of the grass mulch as the 21inch could since the cage was larger underneath. But neither machine should've been ran in mulch modes. Bag or maybe possibly side-discharge. Or both Side-discharge and bagging. The 60volt and 80volt both have dual batteries. But the 60volt Can handle 2 8ah cells. While the 80volt can only handle a max of 5ah dual cells. So you're getting only 400watts of each 80volt cell. Vs 480watts. That's a extra 120watts for the 60volt to last longer in runtime then the 80volt. Just because it's 80volts doesn't mean it's 'MORE POWERFUL!' then the 60volt. That's misjudging in power performance. Even 18volts can slap a 40-56-60-80-120volt system. The biggest reason why some companies go with a HIGHER VOLTAGE. Isn't because it can give more power. No no no no. It's because a Higher voltage can supply similar power with less current flow draw. So it can take less draw power from the batteries to supply the similar power a lower voltage system has. This puts less strain on the batteries. But some companies can handle the higher power draw on a lower voltage battery system by managing the power flow. So even a 18volt can have a pretty powerful system in compared to a higher voltage. It'll just make the lower voltage battery draw lot more power from the battery system that'd heat the pack up more then a higher voltage battery pack would. It's why some companies don't go the insane 56-60-80-100-120volts when they can manage a pretty powerful system just on a 40 or 18/24volt system that even beats a higher voltage system.

You should have bought the 21" deck on the 60 volt cause those tiny blades have no momentum and get bogged down way faster

I think it's also the amount of space down there. the dual blade system seems to have a smaller overall volume there, which would get clogged up faster.

when the mower with the wider cut bogs down more often, you're not really saving anything.

If you’re trying to cut through grass this tall, if you side chute it, then you should go way farther. (With both units) The grass has no place to go.

Looks like you have the wrong mowers to begin with. Why not buy those sit on/ driving type. You'll cover more ground and much powerful

lol, I've been thinking about getting the new Toro 60V to compare it to my older model that I picked up in 2020. I also really want to try the newest Snapper models that have stepsense to see how they compare too. Honestly though, if you mow regularly and never let things get overgrown all of the battery mowers work just fine. The problem with power and mulching and suction really only come into play the greatest when things get overgrown or when you have tons of debris on the lawn.

@@TurfMechanicunfortunately not everyone has the time to mow regularly. Plus if anyone is paying $7-1000 for a mower, it should perform at least on par with a gas mower. And toros mkting is misleading by saying they have the worlds most powerful battery. They forgot to add the worlds least powerful electric motor.

On the 80v if you went on the slowest speed, it might not have bogged down. Or with the side shoot open.

DO NOT BUY THESE MOWERS! Flimsy and break easily and GREENWORKS WILL NOT HONOR THE WARRANTY. I hit a 3 inch ball of wood with the blade and the gear drive broke apart. Greenworks called it customer misuse and says I'm stuck with a $600 paperweight because they won't sell or give me the parts to fix it. Tried to be very polite but the customer service guy just turned on me when he realized he was told he couldn't help me. What a horrible company.
