Greenscreen vs. Bluescreen | When and why?

Фильм және анимация

This will be my first say about greenscreen and bluescreens techniques. There will be more in which we will talk about tracking, keying itself and compositing. Theory and basics are always important. Hope you enjoy it!

Blue is also really good for day-shots. At work we use Blue- / greenscreen for hair-colour choice: - Blue for 'Blond hair'. Reason like as what he said, blue = less spill. Blond hair is really reflective, so it gets a lot of spill on smaller detailed hair. - Green is good for 'Darker hair'

I don’t know much about film, though I’m friends with a lot of communication/creative arts majors so I’m at least a little more acquainted with film and production. This is really cool to see as a non-film student. I’ve always appreciated how much thought and work goes into the behind the scenes especially since my friends are so involved. Thank you Andrey, for this information. The main reason why greenscreen is preferred over bluescreen is because the green channel has the least noise of all channels and luminosity is - like you already said - a lot higher resulting in brighter edges but only if the greenscreen has been lit brighter than the foreground. It should always be lit by plus/minus a quarter stop to the foreground. Most of the time during principal photography the production is not clear about the final background if it’s going to be a bright or dark lighting situation and the digital compositor will have to do a lot of edge fixing and treatment to restore the contamination in the transition area from foreground to background. Another reason why bluescreen is preferred over greenscreen is if the talent has blonde hair, because it has a lot of greens in it and therefore blue is the better color for matte extraction. Either way the more you know about the final background or the lighting of the scene the better for the artist oh and never forget to shoot a clean plate, but that’s almost always not happening...

You are wrong in some things you said : 1) Green screen is used for digital camera and blue screen is used for film camera, 2) In order to avoid color spills on talent, you need to light a green or blue screen with green or blue light (just for the screen not the talent) like the ones made by Kinoflos, each time there is a youtuber talking about green or blue screen they forget that because they don't know that...
