I was there in 1983 when in US Air Force stationed in Sondrestrom. We included Kulusuk in the Dew line )(Dye site) resupply program. I was at Kulusuk twice. Once for a familiarization trip and once by the request of the Danish Government to look into the vast amount of equipment held in storage that was never used. Many of the things we (Americans) sent was the wrong voltage and it was just stored for decades. We could never get a retrograde program set up, so I have no idea what happened to all of that stuff. I was at the DYE site when it was operational a had several drinks with the crew there. A very unique experience and place. Thanks for sharing!

@@TheURLofEaling I'm going to rewatch them. Kulusuk was operationally under two units; Airfield Management, runway maintenance, old barracks, fire control, terminal management, logistics management. The dye site was a separate unit with a distant early warning mission. Every other Friday, the Danish terminal manager would host a party. A drunken mess. Several ladies from the village would walk to these parties. Keeping in mind, there were no medical personnel and no police of any kind. It was unique!

@@edherwick6995 Wow - I know interaction between service personnel and the locals was frowned upon, and its quite a long walk from the village up to the DYE station. But why were there TWO airfields, BE-2 and Kulusuk? Couldn't everything have been done with just the one. Or could Kulusuk airstrip not be made long enough? Feel free to email me - the address is at the end of all my videos.

@@TheURLofEaling I'll give you the quick answer. All of the DYE sites were on the ice caps except Kulusuk. The resupply of the other DYE sites was by a specialized Air National Guard unit (109th) who flew C130's equipped with skis. Kulusuk could not be resupplied that way. They airstrip was built and support facilities built to maintain it. The skill set of the DYE site workers would be used in that fashion. And, we wanted a presence on the eastern side of Greenland.

Very dramatic scenery, but I could not live there with not a tree in sight - seems so sad. If that is your home tho, that will be what you love the most ! Amazing how adaptable humans can be, but the greatest thing is the vast expanses of empty land - I love that, it puts us humans into our rightful position in the world - we should never forget it can survive without us !

9:20 That's "my" puppy: the black one! This cutie was all over me when my wife and I took a tour of Kulusuk in July 2019! I recognize him. Wow! Great video ... you have a great camera. East Greenland is amazing for sure. We also took off (and returned to) Reykjavik City. We did the walk to the village from the airstrip, but took a boat back across the bay -- although it was still something of a hike, LOL.

Thank you Katie - it might the order I made them in?! I'll confess I have not been to the Maldives - but I saw a documentary about it and they were discussing the difficulties they have disposing of things there. I thought it a bit ironic that a more conventional paradise such as the Maldives shares a similar problem. I live in London UK. There are 5 more videos I've done of Greenland (which is probably my favourite country) on my channel, and some of other places too.

I'm glad to hear that - well I'm impressed; my understanding was that you can't generally film the aurora in real-time, though the Sony has a reputation for low-light, and I guess the aurora were really bright when you saw them. I'm also surprised my Helheim video has attracted such attention, compared to my other videos. I know its got quite a few shares but I sometimes wonder where the traffic is coming from!
