Greenland: Agriculture or Mining? | ARTE.tv Documentary

Nickel, gold, iron, zinc, uranium... Beneath the pastures of Southern Greenland lies a host of natural resources. With global warming making them more easily accessible will Greenland choose to mine them? Or alternatively take advantage of a milder climate to develop the agricultural sector?

thank you for this documentary that it shows the dilema of Greenlanders. I admire their wisdom as they want progress but not at any price. Sustainable agriculture and ecoturism makes much more sense but depending on the type of mining and the scale of it could also be reasonable.

What Greenlanders need to do is travel to other countries where mining is just gearing up, in progress, and have shut down to due exhausting resources and talk to the residents. See what and how things work or don’t.

Is it not more economic to bring in supplies, where possible, from Newfoundland or anywhere along the East Coast of Canada, US. Even flying it would seem to be cheaper. Why the dependence on far away Norway? Independence involves making sound economic choices and relying on shipments from Norway doesn't seem to be one that encourages independence.

Open mines in areas Far from population centers. Promote tourism and Support farms. Build more farms in tawed areas, grow beets, carrots and potatoes. Build green houses for vegetable needs, Export lamb and Import grain. Built small dams and canals in streams, with wind turbines and hydropower produce cheap energy. Pump the water and irrigate the grass. Built aluminium and fertiliser industry with cheap electricity. Built consumer goods industry in big cities.

You can only open mines where there's an economicaly minable ore deposit... Hydro power has an issue as most rivers worthy of a dam ends up in a glacier... And you don't want your dam washed out by a glacial outburst. Aluminium industry, they ( well the Danish government ) missed the opportunity at the Ivigtut Cryolite Mine to do more than mining. ( on the other hand that's a mine that didn't do much damage since the ore was transfered straight from the open mine pit to the ships by a crane. ) It's not as if there hasn't been mines in Greenland before, but with the exception of Ivigtut ( for good reasons ) all the mines so far have been... well mines ( read : underground, with galeries )... not open pits.

Darum geht es vom Grundprinzip her.

Why either? With greenhouses food can be made 6 months of the year and stored by drying/freezing. Mining can be less destructive these days so could be "tolerated"? Covering the Island with Wind Turbines could provide 100% clean energy with Batteries as storage and could join up to feed Canada/USA/Data Centers??

Expanding food production is good but with short seasons Greenlanders can never be self sufficient. Farming and food is not a route to a 21st century economy which can support full political independence. Only the first year growing these vegetables have been tried? Either farmers lack entrepreneurship or the Danish and Greenlandic governments have not been offering the right grants and incentives to support new industries other than mining. Similarly not clear why Greenland cannot find more native tourist guides. Interesting film but one wants to know more.

Greenland can have mines but they should be nationalised, owned FULLY by the state, operated by state workers. But thats a dream, because the big Corporations will pay the Greenland politicians enough under the table and suddenly the mine is open, corruption is inevitable in a Capitalist country.

I hope they will develop a local economy based on native knowledge and Viking-influenced farming. In the long term, that is more sustainable than mining, which may provide a short-term profit but a long-term loss.

I am surprised at the topography of today's Greenland, I finished reading a book named" The ice at the end of the world " by Jon Gertner it's about vast the ice sheet and glaciers of Greenland and Antarctica from 1888 to2018. Now it looks all green and no central ice sheet and glaciers. It is a sad sight. At present the money and power hungry are discussing ,what industry should be pursued in Greenland rather then where has all ice gone, I would like to cry at the state of our perilous earth. 😢😢😢😢

The documentary is filmed in South West Greenland... Which is Green ( it's the reasn why the Vikings called it Greenland after all ) If you go in the National Park ( That's about half of the Greenland ) you will find icecaps, icebergs and glaciers ending up in the sea. Personally, as one of the few people ( that year ) that was allowed to visit the North Eastern Coast, in the national park, on the summer I went there, it's a sight to behold and something preserve. The debate on the Uranium mine is moot anyway, Greenland passed a law banning the mining of Uranium, but the mountains in that specific area are so rich that almost any metal/rare earth can be mined there.
