I'm trying again! A couple years ago we had a swimming pool full of green water, and now I can't make a bucket-full to save my life. But I'm gonna give it another go. Like Yoda said: "Do or do not. There is no try." And maybe we'll get some mosquitoes out of the deal too to feed the fish.
Here we go. The day after I uploaded this video I got this email from the local assembly about west Nile virus (WNV):
Dear Neighbor,
The Coachella Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District has detected 91 mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV) in La Quinta, Palm Desert, Mecca, Thermal, Oasis, Rancho Mirage, and Indio.
Recent Detections:
• La Quinta: Madison St. & Avenue 52, Monroe St. & Avenue 60
• Palm Desert: Fred Waring Dr. & Warner Trail
• Indio: Jackson & Avenue 50
• Mecca, Thermal, Rancho Mirage and Oasis: Continued detections this week
This number is significant considering there were zero detections at this time last year. The increase highlights how important it is to take steps to protect ourselves and our families.
Protect Yourself:
• Use Insect Repellent: Apply EPA-registered insect repellents containing at least 30% DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535. Avoid essential oils as they are less effective.
• Avoid Peak Mosquito Activity: Stay indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.
• Secure Your Home: Ensure window and door screens are intact to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Prevent Mosquito Breeding:
• Eliminate Standing Water: Regularly check and drain water from potted plants, bird baths, tires, and any other containers.
• Maintain Drains: Clean lawn drains regularly to remove water and debris.
• Upkeep Water Features: Ensure swimming pools, ponds, and fountains are maintained with working pumps.
About West Nile Virus: WNV spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito, which acquires the virus from birds. While most people infected show no symptoms, some may experience fever, headaches, and body aches. In severe cases, hospitalization is required, and it can be fatal. If you experience symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
