Just helping Gordon Ramsay improve his fire safety skills in the kitchen. I don't think he wants to listen though...

    that goes to show why what Gordon Ramsay just did was stupid on many levels. If he just calmly controls the fire by putting a lid on, some people might learn the right thing. If he throws the pan in to sink and adds water to create drama, then he might know what he is doing - but people watching might get the wrong idea.

    Nice bit of theater on Ramsey's part. I have two kitchen fire stories. First, I was working as a camp cook, making hash browns on a six-burner stove. I had gotten the oil nice and hot, and dumped a bag of frozen hash browns on the huge steel square pan that covered four burners and was miserably heavy. I didn't know that over the humid summer, the freezer had got opened a lot, and the hash browns were accompanied by a ton of ice! The ice pushed the oil off the pan onto the burner, and I had a foot-high fire going at the back of the stove, luckily with a high back with a warming/utensil shelf on it. What could I do? Breakfast was at eight. I just kept stirring and kept an eye on the fire, which burned itself out. The second one: one day I was driving home from work, and I got a call which began, "Mom, first of all, we're all OK." Now there's a sentence guaranteed to raise both pulse rate and blood pressure. One of the kids had wanted to make popcorn and covered the heating oil. (We all make mistakes.) She uncovered the pan and the pan backdrafted and caught on fire. They started for some water, and then remembered a video of a firefighter dumping water on a grease fire. They looked at each other, said, "No water!" and grabbed the fire extinguisher and put it out. Was a heck of a mess, but I was so glad they were ok.

  • @MonkeyJedi99

    @MonkeyJedi99

    2 жыл бұрын

    I have been the one starting a phone call to a mother with that phrase "First of all, we're all OK." It was never a kitchen fire. Usually, it was a broken window or water issue (burst pipe, leaky faucet, etc.) If it was an injury, we usually applied first aid and waited on the back porch (to avoid getting blood in the house).

    I mean... points to your kids for having enough sense and clarity to use an extinguisher (bonus points to you for having it around) instead of water. Pretty sure no one, parent or not, wants to come home to a scorched kitchen, much less a pile of ash and debris.

My wife and I have four- we bought a two pack, and then the previous owner of our current house gave us his two when he left. Nobody with whom I've talked about it so far (family, friends, coworkers) has a fire extinguisher in their own home. It's always "Huh, that's a good idea, I should get one for my house, too," followed by never actually following through on getting one. I should start gifting them on birthdays and holidays, might just save someone's life.

    I'm pretty sure the reaction to the idiot sandwich throwing spaghetti water on the fire was staged, or at the very least dramatized. You can see his genuine reaction to that kind of incident in Boiling Point. He just takes the pan and moves it somewhere it can burn itself out safely, either that or puts a lid on it. And I'm pretty sure being a genuine chef for as long as he has, he would know in that situation to just grab a fire extinguisher if the fire escaped the pan.

    I've been dishwashing and had chefs putting pans of flaming oil into the sink full of water I was using (with warning). A fireball is created but disappears quickly. It got to the point I'd turn away to save my eyebrows and keep working. I was even scrubbing away and cleaning whilst the pan I was holding was on fire. You get used to it. Other times a pan has caught fire and the chefs gave 0 Fs and declared they cook with fire. The Gordon scene was clearly played up for the cameras and it made him seem inexperienced.

    It's a scripted event for TV drama. Gordon's shown how to handle grease fires several times on Hells Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares. Painful truth is, Gordon stopped caring about food and, more specifically, cooking half a decade ago or more. He's earned it, but he needs to stop promoting himself as a food/cooking expert anymore. He only does it for the money now.

    You do a really nice job green screening yourself into shows. This whole scenario looked staged though. 99.9997% of the time, taking the pan off of the burner for a minute is sufficient to put the fire out in a pan. I don't know what they were cooking, but in my kitchen, I would've taken the pan off of the burner, grabbed a sheet of foil to tent the meat, smother the fire, and set the pan down outside to cool off. In any case, I don't know why she had the pan so hot in the first place; it didn't look like she was searing the steak - just burning the shit out of it.
