Thank you so much for bringing light on this issue. I have a Samsung galaxy S20 plus. Before even 6 months after buying, the screen suddenly switched off while I had the phone in my hands after a software update and there was a green line on it. Even when I went to my local Samsung Service Centre they denied my claim that it didn't get physically damaged and put the blame on me that I was the one who had damaged it and they did not fix it even when I still had the warranty. After a couple weeks another line had appeared. I went on Samsung's website and under the S20 plus topic there was nothing but complaints about the exact issue I have. Samsung had not responded to any of them and acted like they didn't exist. I went on youtube that same day to search up if any youtubers were talking about it but alas there was only one person and he said that youtube had shadow banned his channel because he informs people of these type of issues that tech companies just slip under the rug. Again thank you for making a video about this.

Recently, a KZreadr by the name of @a2dchannel uploaded a video in which he mentioned that 'most phones experience heating issues during software updates,' and as a result, our displays may exhibit green lines. In the video, he shows the connection between the display and the motherboard, resembling ribbon-like lines. In some cases, these cables are soldered to the motherboard, and excessive heat can lead to the detachment of the soldered wires, potentially causing the green line issue.

Actually the reason for this issue has been found. Yes it is an hardware issue, not software and it has do with the display connector ribbon cable. Apparently these ribbons are soldered to the display using some adhesive which when heated causes the contacts to fail, thus lines occur on the display. The reason it happens after a software update in most cases is because during a software update a phone is pushed to its limit in installing the update and this produces a lot of heat. Also it is more likely that the users charge their phones during the update which in turn produces more heat! All these heat results in the adhesive to loosen and eventually these lines occur. For reference: A Tamil KZread channel called "A2D" has broken down this issue more elaborately.

Brands do not want to take responsibility. I have a Samsung s 20 plus and I got a green line after a software update. after visiting the service centre the person told me that they could not repair my device for free because it had scratches. I do not know how the brand expects the device to be brand new without any scratches after 2 to 3 years of usage. I always keep my device in a case and have tempered glass installed. I have just started to make a video whenever a software update comes. I had to pay close to 18K to get it repaired. PR and originality are two very different things.

In my country, if you do trade in with samsung, they'll overlook the green lines on your phone. Basically they'll treat it like the line never existed, and if your phone is in mint condition (minus the lines), they'll just offer you the maximum number regardless. But anyhow, interesting that they cite "software update" as a reason. My guess is probably heat. Software updates can run for a long time and the update itself is a CPU intensive task that heats up the phone. Since a phone typically eject heat from the screen, excessive heat can be an issue, especially if you use a flip cover case or put your phone on places that it can't let the heat out. Temps would rise uncontrollably and could damage the screen since OLED panels are very sensitive to heat. Not sure if the heat can damage cables at that temperature though.

If the service staff ask you to left your phone better record the process and took image of the phone from all side to protect yourself.

I recently encountered a similar problem with my Realme X7 Max. When I posted about the issue on Twitter and tagged Realme customer support, they refused to acknowledge that the green line problem was their responsibility. This was really frustrating, and over time, I noticed that my screen pixels began to deteriorate. Realme is also unwilling to provide a free repair for my phone. It's frustrating to think about paying for the repair when the issue isn't my fault. Now, my phone is essentially unusable and has become nothing more than a paperweight. This is pathetic.

Hi pratik, thank you so much for making this video. I have this small request as well. Samsung and most of their phones has this issue of back glass/plastic panel popping off due to poor adhesive after probably an year of usage. Even IP rated flagships like the fold 3, the s21 ultra, the s22 ultra, note 20 ultra ,you name it, everything has this issue at one point or another. I have so many friends who have temporarily lost their data due to slight rains, just because nobody checks their back panels everytime they go out. The slightest amount of liquid is enough to kill even a flagship device after one year of usage. Samsung doesn't care about this issue. I hope you'll make a video on this and understand the severity of this issue. Replacing a screen, that is just a one part change. This kills the entire phone. Keep making awesome content!!❤❤

Thanks for again bringing the light to this issue. I had the same issue with my Galaxy S20 Ultra which was purchased outside India and hence did not get any help from Samsung Customer Service in India. The issue literally started while the phone was rebooting from the Software update. This is both related to hardware and Software as some software update can make small changes to the power delivery and optimization to the displays. Now, why that is not happening to all phones receiving the software update, no two physical phones are made exactly identical and there will always be minor differences in terms of Silicon used, Display panel used and even the circuit used, due to nature of Solid State Electronics. For example, when you see Laptop reviews, you will see that exact same laptop with exact same display sometimes have smaller deviation in maximum brightness, color gamut coverage etc. So, those software updates affect some models more than others.

From my knowledge, i think so when the phone undergoes in a software update, the nand is flashed and the updates are usually 3-4 gbs and since these days storage is fast, it produces heat and after heating the solder in the display connector is melted which results in an not so connected port. This not so connected port causes the green line of death. I have personally acquired a ton of phones but none did so 😂

Dear Pratik Ji, Hi, Software CAN cripple the display.... or any other hardware part for that matter. While installing Linux/Unix (the kernel on which Android was initially based), it was always a precaution clearly passed down that ONLY install if you know your device specifics. The software, in case of these kernels, controls the entire flow of current / voltage to the hardware, so a minor fault in the kernel code, may actually end up sending wrong current/voltage and will end up blowing the display.... or other hardware. PS: I have seen a friend's CRT monitor blow up (stopped working permanently) while installing Linux... So trust me... it can happen.

I visited the service center and they blamed me that i must have physically damaged the device by either pressing against it or droppping it which I know for a fact that I didn't. They then told me that I have to now replace the entire display which costs around 30k. I think I'm done with Apple now and would buy thirteen 10k Oppo/Vivo/Redmi phones instead of one 130k iPhone.

My theory regarding these issues is that brands are deliberately crippling the devices so that consumers will buy newer models. Before Covid the only known hardware issues were of only three devices. As per my knowledge the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 explosion, Iphone 6 and 6 Plus "Bendgate" and way back with Iphone 4 was the "Antennagate" are the only known hardware issues and manufacturing defects. But in the past few years specially after Covid there are a lot of quality control issues with smartphone brands namely Poco motherboard and camera dead issues, Oneplus Nord 2 explosion of some units and now these green line issues with the majority of smartphone brands involved. I think most brands are playing these dirty game to recoup the losses they made during covid years and as they know that smartphone innovation has plateaued the only way a consumer will buy a new phone is if there is a fault in the device and so they are deliberately crippling our devices with these hardware faults. The sad part is almost all the manufacturers are together in this game so we as consumers are totally screwed and we can't even vote with our wallet. The future is bleak for us consumers.

One thing is for sure: ICs can be damaged with wrong software configurations as well.

I consider myself a tech enthusiast, always eager to explore the latest updates and features, while my sister, on the other hand, is more of a casual user. I advised her not to update the software on her phone, but I, being the tech-savvy one, couldn't resist updating mine whenever a new software version arrived. We both own 5G-capable phones, yet my sister has remained loyal to the factory version, never updating it. Interestingly, she received the latest software update on the very day we bought the phones, but she never bothered with it. She didn't even receive the 5G update that I got. She's perfectly okay with 4G. Surprisingly, her phone performs exceptionally well. It's at least 100 times ( 😉) faster and smoother than mine. She never encounters any lag or performance issues. Still her one is like the very first day we bought the mobile,

Let me clarify the problem and how to avoid purchasing a phone that may develop this issue in the future. Don’t worry, it’s simple: just check if the display is AMOLED, Super AMOLED, or OLED. If the phone you are considering buying has a Super AMOLED or AMOLED panel, it’s better to avoid it. This is because Samsung, who manufactures all kinds of AMOLED displays, has problems with display quality, causing many smartphones with AMOLED screens to develop green lines. So, if the phone you’re looking at has an OLED panel from any another brand like LG, BOE, Visionox, TCL etc., go for it without any doubt!!! just make sure to check which brand’s OLED display panel the phone maker and are using. I hope this helps, and I’m sorry for those who already have this issue. Please be careful when buying your next smartphone.

@@Kiryu-gf1jt Bro Even iPhones that used Samsung AMOLED display have faced, and continue to face, display problems due to the poor quality of Samsungs displays. However, most of the new iPhones now primarily use panels made by LG or BOE. The iPhone 14 series, which used LGmade panels, had some issues, but these were software related and were resolved by Apple through a software update. We are seeing fewer issues with iPhones because iOS is different compare to android and Apple invests a lot in research and development for their smartphones. They even calibrate the display according to their own standards. Else, you can personally investigate whether other phones with OLED panels from different brands have had same issues or not. This will provide you a clearer picture.

I've complained about a problem with my phone, visited their service centers, and even emailed them. But they won't replace the screen free because there's a small crack on the back of my phone. It's frustrating because the issue came from their update, and they won't fix it for free due to the crack or their ridiculous policy. I've thought that these companies take advantage of people who don't know their rights, making them pay for services or buy new phones. I'm really upset because I spent a lot of money on my Vivo X60, and it now has four lines on the screen. I'm a student and can't afford a new phone, so I've been using it like this for four months, trying to find a solution. I hope things get better soon.

So it's over heating that cause the ribbon connection that is soldered to come loose, it happens when you update your device and charge simultaneously causing it to heat up more. This is why you don't auto update.

Well I have a Oneplus 6 from 5 years back that has fallen 5-7 times (2 times in water), not taking into account minor falls, been working perfectly as a secondary phone for the past 2 years. Using pixel experience based on Android 13, with perfect monthly security updates, so don't know how brands mess with updates, when outside developers provide better software support. Also, since this is a display with 60z I'm guessing the issue happens with higher display rate displays, maybe.

That the phones with high refresh rate are more susceptible to this issue is my thought. Of course there are a few exception to this (iPhone X or something) but it's generally the case. iPhone, despite implementing high refresh rate screens way later than Android brands, still fucks up some of their phones with 120hz displays. So your best bet? Choose a phone that can be easily repaired everywhere. This will depend on your own country. For that, I would choose an iPhone

I am facing the same problem with my Samsung M52 phone. The first greenline appeared randomly when I was watching a video. When I visited the Samsung service center, the executive over there said that my phone's warranty period has expired (16 months old) and that the issue is due to physical damage. I tried to convince the executive that the phone did not face any physical damage at least in the last 2 - 3 months (before that there was a minor fall) and there is no visible damage to the screen (not even a scratch). However, Samsung is not offering free replacement of the screen or any other solution. The funny thing is that now there are 3 lines on my phone. The green line gradually becomes white and thicker. It's like every month one new green line is appearing. Thanks for letting me know that the issue is being faced by almost all the brands and also about One Plus offering lifetime warranty. I was considering purchasing Motorola edge 40. However, now I think I should go with some OnePlus model.

The problem in most of the cases is with the phones with low refresh rate display, the phones with greater refresh rate aren't facing any issues ( at most of the cases). I think it may be software update issue, it is sending more voltage to the display than required which is making the display damaged and green lines pop up ☠️

The green line just suddenly appears on my S21+. I was playing mobile game, then the second i look away from the screen to lie down, it just popped up. I was baffled at the sight. Like how and why did that happens? I rarely dropped the phone, i took special care to protect the phone form any physical abuse and the device certainly do not make contact with water. But then i remembers i had my latest software updates 2 weeks ago. Not trying to be a conspiracy theorist, but are they pushing out updates that intentionally screws our phones so we would upgrade our devices more frequently? You are spot on about older phones never having this issue. I used to own an S7 edge from 2016-2021. Never had a problem until the motherboard burns out. 5 years of use was worth the price i paid for. I can't say the same for my S21+

when mobile phone is updated every chip in the PCB + display + battery + controller is heated . sometimes the heat is far more than than the threshold . usually when phone is hot the CPU will downclock but updating will always on full power mode . All the build up heat will move through display backplate . the FPCB of the display is very heat sensitive so all the buildup heat can damage the connection . in some case the connection of display chips a broken . the only way to fix it is either reball all the chip or use flex bonding machine which is around 10Kusd . Due to the cost and technicality required only manufactures have it . i am failure testing engineer in global foundries i only know this problem after watching @a2d video . it is possible to fix it but the initial cost is so high a normal repair guy or even service center cannot fix it ...
