‘Green-left think tank’ wakes up to renewables unreliability

Sky News host Chris Kenny says Grattan Institute have “finally woken up” to renewables being unreliable.
“On this Grattan Institute report, now they are a green-left think tank,” Mr Kenny said.
“They have been full on for the renewables transition for decades.
“Yet they have finally come out with a report saying, hang on a second.
“We are headed for disaster, we are not going to have enough power, we are not going to build enough transmission in time.”

If these solutions were as economical as they are advertised, the price of power would be going down, not up by 30% and about to go up by another 20%. Numbers are numbers, they aren't opinions.

@@TangRev power prices is on average far cheaper in countries with high share of renewables, as it is obvious that renewables produce a kWh for a fraction from a thermal powerplant. Power is a trade asset, the price is decided hourly on the commodity market, and true production cost play a little role, as especcial oil, coal and nuclear is heavily subsidiesd (tons more than renewables, where every cluelss clown brings this stupid and false argument up) True cost from solarfarm: 2 to 4 cent/kWh, Wind onshore 3 to 6 cent/kWh, thermal powerplants 15 to 30 cent/kWh, nuclear 20 to 50 cent/kWh.... just to give you a glimpse of reality

Australia had its own Computer System called CSIRAC supposedly quite formidable and on par with what the USA and UK had at the time. The British Government wanted to export their technology and used our wool exports as method to derail it and thus with a stroke of the Australian government pen the OS Computer industry imported ICL mainframes and shutdown the local IT industry and ever since its been mostly importing tech from overseas.

Amazing that the Green / Labor agenda has caught up with the authors. In building any transmission line there will always be a 'blue spotted frog' or aboriginal sacred site' or unique something that will slow the construction and add to costs - look at any recent civil works project in AU. For any analysis the cost is not the cost at the place of generation but the cost at the consumer's house / factory. Getting energy from source to point of consumption was always part of the system costs (not just monetary but also societal/ environmental etc.). Tom Sowell has long made the point that for any project there are no solutions only tradeoffs.

Building battery storage is the key, we need as much renewables as possible, and we need huge battery storage facilities. The idea that we could or even should keep burning coal, oil or gas as our normal source of power generation is absurd, only complete morons would want that. We need to transit to EVs as fast as possible, as this is extremely effective to get primary energy usage down, furthermore with technologies like V2G, V2H there is a huge benefit to the powergrid, while reducing oil usage by vast quantities. Stop this ridiculous bashing of renewables, get educated about it, it's shocking enough that we still need to discuss the necessity to move away from ICE cars and grids that are driven by thermal powerplants.

@@antontsau 1GWh battery storage is roughly 100.000 US Dollars right now and will be a third of that in a few years. And (besides the obvious environmental gains) do the math and calculate the costs of fuel, oil, gas, coal, uran you would otherwise need to burn every year. Power out of renewables and battery storage is today cheaper than power out of a thermal powerplant, and the real benefit is the much less environmental impact, besides the fact that fossile ressources are finite and need more and more energy to be found, mined and processed.
