Rekka Bellum works as half of Hundredrabbits, which is exploring the planned failability of modern technology at the bounds of the hyper-connected world. They explore low-tech solutions and document their findings with the hope of building a more resilient future.
Operating on a sailboat, they rely on solar energy to power their workstations. Sailing to far away places, they often come into situations where bandwidth is an issue. Visiting image-heavy websites is costly, and sometimes impossible. A website can be made to load faster by optimising its images for the web. It is an extra step that is worth taking because it ensures greater access for everyone.
Green Hacks is a series of artist-made how-to videos unpacking practical tips to educate, inform and inspire their community. From non-toxic analogue development techniques, to DIY lens upcycling, to lengthening camera lifespans through alternative software, each short video offers a creative but concrete step, demonstrating how to produce/show/think about and make art in more sustainable ways. Small actions with significant impacts.

great overview!
Nice and simple advices to make the web just a little better
Great advice, especially the imagemagick options are helpful. A few other tips I know of: You can drastically shrink some PNGs without any quality loss by processing them with tools like ImageOptim. This process can be very slow, which is why image editing programs avoid it. And of course vector graphics are much smaller with diagrams. If you manage to get a page's size down to about 14kB or less it can be transferred over the internet in a single data packet, allowing it to load quickly even on very slow connections. I know of a blog author who doesn't use any CSS because it actually increased the number of readers, so you can likely get away with very minimal styling.
Easy instructions explained in a great format - thanks
Loved the video. Thanks.
