I’m not huge into Green Day, but this song is an epic masterpiece. I kinda wish you would have listened to the studio version first. You cant truly get the feel of a song when its played slightly differently every night live. The studio version is just masterful. Thanks David.

I officially wish he had started with the studio version, all of the little anticipation things they are doing with this live version require that the listener actually knows the song.

I could have written the same comment but this song was extra important to me because in 2005 I was marooned in a foreign country then I heard it and all those swarmy warmy feelins kicked in.

The entire album is an epic masterpiece dude. It's genuinely one of the best albums ever composed.
They were a trio from their founding in 1987 until the release of their rock opera album American Idiot in 2004. That album required more musicians and they’ve been more than a trio since.
Officially they're still a three-piece but they expanded their tour lineup slowly over time

Saw them a couple weeks ago in London, they were SO GOOD live! Still got it!
This is a heck of a song to start your Green Day reactions with! I love this whole album, and this and Homecoming (which is actually slightly longer) are very underrated. I know you don't pay much attention to lyrics, but right about the time that you'd noticed the similarities to "Ring of Fire", he's singing "I've walked this line, a million and one fucking times." so it's quite possibly a deliberate reference to another Cash song.

Homecoming!!! I doubt this guy could last the distance. Nuts song!!!
I went to see these guys live a couple of months back. For being in this game for 35 or so years now, they still owned that stage with so much energy and enthusiasm that I couldn't help but be impressed. They are, at heart, a 3-piece band but the tour lineup accomodates for a lot of the stuff you hear on studio releases that they themselves otherwise don't do. The 3-man stuff you'd be more likely to experience on their earlier albums, so anything pre-2000.
Seen them play two weeks ago in Glasgow. These guys know how to put on a show!

Wow a surprising one. Green Day is the band that really shaped my musical tastes back in the day. Nirvana wowed me first but Green Day changed me. I was just at the perfect age. Green Day are primarily a three-piece but after this album they almost always had that second guitarist. To make the guitar fuller and so Billie Joe could perform more onstage and not have to be bogged down playing guitar so much. Also their music expanded so they need touring musicians to recreate the music on the records live. Fun reaction. Great score. Seeing your Ramones shirt, I'd really love to see you react to some really old Green Day. When they were a true 3-piece.

He should react at least the Chicago live performance (it’s on KZread aswell fully) but more specifically “she” from that performance, he deffo needs to head back to some Insomniac, Nimrod, Kerplunk, 1039/smooth and of course the all time classic Dookie ! Even warning and shenanigans had some amazing songs on them!
Great reaction! I love green day, they always put on a great show!
Loved seeing a review/reaction in which there is actually a review of the music involved and not only watching a clip!! Keep going, thanks!!
I’m playing this whole album live here in Geelong, Australia on Sunday and am stoked to see this on your radar. It’s worth a listen in its entirety. It’s a great story, and there’s no weak tune in there. See you down the rabbit hole!!
Excellent David, loved your reaction/review and analysis. This is a great performance, I always really liked this song and very happy with your score. Thanks DH, love the shirt btw!
Thanks for reacting to Jesus of Suburbia. I found you after watching all of your BabyMetal reactions (love those too, btw). American Idiot was the first album I bought with my own money that I earned working part time at IHOP when I was in high school, so it holds a special place in my heart. A lot of those songs on that album did get uber popular (American Idiot, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Wake Me Up When September Ends), but I find it's best to listen to the album as a whole. It's a concept album, a story about a guy (Jesus of Suburbia) from the bad part of town, sick of all the shit he's going through (that's this song), decides he's gonna take matters into his own hands and try improve his life (which ultimately fails), finds a girl (Whatsername), has relationship issues, gets dumped, wallows in sadness (Wake Me Up When September Ends), then goes back home and years later reminisces on the relationship he had with Whatsername... at least that's how I interpret it. For me, all of the songs hit a little bit harder when you listen to them in the context of the story. Letterbomb is my personal favorite song on that album, it's fast paced and is where the climax of the story happens. It's a letter written by Whatsername to Jesus of Suburbia breaking up with him. She says "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia / the St. Jimmy is a figment of / your father's rage and your mother's love / made me the idiot America." I don't know why that line resonates with me, but it does. There are actually two 9+ minute songs on the album, but they're basically broken down into 5 smaller songs that lead into one another (the book with the lyrics in it say as much). Homecoming is the other one, I think I actually like it better than Jesus of Suburbia. Probably because it follows Wake Me Up When September Ends, and it's good to get back to a higher energy song. As for the other musicians on stage, I'm fairly certain the two keyboard players were session musicians hired to join the tour. The other guitarist is Jason White, who toured with them to fill out the guitar sounds, as you said, starting in 1997. He was an official member of the band from 2012-2016 and worked on the *¡Uno! ¡Dos! ¡Tre!* albums, then resumed his previous role as touring musicain for them.
loved your reaction and commentary throughout the song!
As always fantastic reaction and review David!! For me this song is the best of Green Day and in "in their style" the album American Idiot is a mssterpiece. The studio version is also better to appreciate all the things inside this great and long song! But what is sure is Green Day make incredible live performances. Thanks for this video David!
If you're going to listen to American Idiot green day you have to listen to the album cover to cover. It's a rock opera and the lyrics make a lot more sense in the context of the narrative. Songs flow into each other and the album switches between fast paced to slow depending on the point of the story. One of the motifs is Rage and Love, and they display that throughout the album. The production is also solid and the ending is very powerful. It's a much better listen as a cohesive story than playing random songs out of order.

100% its an absolute masterpiece end to end. And what a HUGE, bittersweet ending to the story with Whatsername. My favorite song of all time.
The drummer actually does a lot, just the camera was mostly ignoring him unfortunately.
This is quite possibly my favorite Green Day song. The time changes, the lyrics, ahh
To me this is the punk/pop opera. Catchy. It fits in very well with the album concept. And yeah, any rock music fan should be blown away by their live show. Billy Joe may have melodic pop hooks, but he has a punk heart.
Just saw this live in Dublin, it was amazing! Kind of wish they would do Homecoming live though, it's the other long song on that album
Just seeing you in Ramones Tshirt listening to Greenday, I wanna tell you, they were playing Ramones songs when Ramones were included into Hall of Fames in 90s, thats actually a great performance worth checking out
Writing this from a hospital bed (I'll be okay) and watching DH at 5am just for something normal to see. Loving this song and performance and green Day's Himbo bassist.
What an awesome performance!
Should've done the Bullet In a bible live version.

REAL!!!!
This is from a punk rock opera that they made called "American Idiot" about the disillusioned youth during the Bush presidency. This is the 2nd track and there is another 10 minute song at the end of the album called "Homecoming".
They had 2 epic medleys on this record… this was the more commercial of the two… the album as a whole was massive and hit enough rock opera checkboxes to be turned into a broadway show. The other long track/medley is called “homecoming”. Agree with your 8.4…. Id give homecoming an 8.6/8.7…. Recommend you check it out on your own time
I’ve seen Green Day so many times I lost count. I’ve saw them do this song many times. Seeing this live is amazing . I love the song.
Give it another go through and really take in the lyrics. Its telling a story of feeling stuck, self pity, and a realization that you have to move on and change your life and go find yourself.
this is the album that made me a musician. i was 13 when i heard this album and it changed my life.
This song is honestly a show of how many ways a song could potentially go with different riffs and styles while keeping the punk genre. It's amazing.
This is one of two medleys that are part of their rock opera "American Idiot". The album was actually turned into a Broadway show as well.
Love the Zero Signal song in the intro of your videos. Would be cool reacting to some Fear Factory.
I grew up as a son of white upper middle class parents who got divorced while I was four (back in 99) and lived with my dad who got remarried he was always working and my stepmom hated me and prioritized her own child but never in front of my dad so I got quited fucked up in the head, started doin a bunch of shit, always in trouble. Doing all kinda drugs ever created outside of opiates even tho I was out of a “rich” suburb family. Nowadays I’m doin well making around 60-70k a year with a stable job but on the weekends still going insane and never grew up even tho I’m close to 30 and this song still speaks to me I moved back to my moms when I was 13 cause I couldn’t deal with my stepmom anymore tellin me she hates me but when I told my dad sayin she never said that Things got better as my mom was and is great (and my stepdad is a well enough guy aswell but never scolded me as he didnt feel he had the right to) but she felt responsible for the divorce (which she was as she cheated on my dad) so she gave me leeway on everything which just allowed me to fuel my bad behaviors I think this song speaks to people as a lot of those suburbian families try their haredst to seem perfect to the outside but inside there are a fuckton of fucked up families that supress it to keep up their appereances ps sorry for bad english I’m from Germany
First pause in you question the necessities of the 3 other guys but you gotta realize this is a song with 7 or 8 different melodies and uses a lot of instruments that can’t be played by only 3 people, especially after American Idiot had dropped and Green Day was one of the biggest bands in the world and could afford to use a few extra guys to play background instruments

Also, Billy joe is one of the best live performers I’ve seen Green Day puts on a great show
dude you have to check out more Green day especially live videos there one of the best live bands I've ever seen!!!
Hear a lot of different influences here.. The Who come to mind big time. Fun song, good review 🤙🏻
Strongly recommend watching the whole "Bullet in a Bible" concert dvd. You can really see their showmanship on display. (I think it's on their YT page)
More more more more live Green Day
Haha ... just today I thought "What if David got a request for Jesus of Suburbia?" ... seriously ... no kidding ... 🙃😂
The other guitar player on stage is Jason White, he's been touring with them since 1999 and was briefly an official member of Green Day, the keyboardist is Jason Freese and he's been touring with them since 2004, They're both still touring with them today. The sixth guy you see with them is Jeff Matika, who toured with them from around 2009 - 2018ish. He was let go after getting into some trouble on Instagram fighting with his ex-girlfriend and telling Green Day fans to go harass her on Instagram. He's been replaced by Kevin Preston.
It's such a amazing song. ...and, I've never even been a fan of GD. But damn this song is so good!
Have to listen to the official live version when you get a chance, from the Bulletin In A Bible video. Much better sound quality and not sped up like this version is. Sounds way better.
Very underestimated band. So, when are you going to review The Stone Roses?
They’re one of the best live performers I’ve ever seen, saw them in sanfrancisco about a year ago, literally almost 2 hours of pure energy, and i think they have wayyyy better songs than this one that you’d like
This tune is one of the best!
I’m not a huge GD fan but my understanding is the album this song came off was a concept album that tells a story throughout. That story’s message…I’m not sure. That would explain the length of this song. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

If you want a long punk song try The Decline by NOFX. It's around 17-18 minutes long and is a masterpiece, especially if you listen to the version they did with a full orchestra, but listen to the original version first.
Haven't really listened to much green day since dookie. Quite enjoyed their first 3 albums though. 1039 smoothed out slappy hours, and kerplunk.
After a million listens, the bridge is still a weeper but the headbanging is ever better.
Could JOS be the greatest GD song ever? Brilliant!!!
This whole album is a rock masterpiece, this album wasn't actually supposed to happen. The album they recorded was deleted or stolen so they had to re write a whole new album. This is what came of it, the lyrics tell the story so you should react to the album with lyrics.
oh shite some fuckin' GREEN DAY
Japanese concerts always have such incredible audience interactions
American Idiot is a fantastic album even for someone who isn't into Green Day. Totally worth a listen.

"The Decline" by NOFX is the greatest 10 minute song.
did you have this "long feeling" with 10 min of Ghost love score? I remember your answer)
PLEASE review Panic Song from Green Day on their album Insomniac... I think you would like it. It's their heaviest album and during a dark time in their career. Cool sounds.
Yea I really wish u listened to the studio version first then a live cuz the live is never the same
Good song
Green Day is and isnt a 3 piece. I'd say more of a 3 front man band Billie Joe Armstrong [Lead Vocalist/Rhythm Guitarist] Mike Dirnt [Bass Player] Tre Cool [Drummer] They are the 3 faces of the band and the most popular and known members by name. Jason White is their lead guitar player and has been with them since 1997 but he isn't really one who decided to be the face of the group. He is just the lead guitarist but likes to stand further back when it comes to members. They do also have the keyboard players for the background sound like piano and all that for the filling in the live shows considering they have used many instruments in the studio recordings and they obviously need those people to play those instruments live. But as far as the image of the group is concerned its a 3 man image In recent years Jason has become more upfront in the band pics and in his popularity in the group and is more well known now. But they have always had other members especially for live shows but Billie, Mike, and Tre have been the 3 front men and the personalities for the band
The other guys are touring members one of them does keys and acoustic guitar, another does keys and saxophone and the other plays lead
When talking about long punk songs, we need to see a reaction to "The Decline" by NoFX, right?
Yeah...they're smooth operators; consummate professionals. Can production values interfere with...the value of the production...? Seems I remember being disappointed on occasion in the past when a band a liked would start taking itself too seriously with a lot of strings and woodwinds...hehehe...I think Green Day's style benefits more from low production values than this, more glitzy, style of presentation, which "takes the edge off", as it were. Nice review, Dave.
your t-shirt made me laugh because in high school i was the ramones fan who had to get used to green day. I adore them now but i spent literal years insisting I didn't like them. i distinctly recall making my green day fan friend watch rock and roll high school. not even remotely relevant given how you reacted, but i felt the need to share.

I'm honestly not a huge fan of the album but this live was great haha
I saw Green Day live twice, and dozens of other bands throughout, except weird al, you can’t top those guys live.
So I know it doesn't make sense with all these extra people in the band but.... this whole album is basically a punk rock opera, it's meant to be listened as a story. Hope that helps dude
Good
This album was turned into a broadway show too
Bro u have to do come as you are by nirvana if u haven't heard that song before ur really missing out

Studio they're a 3, the other guitarist's been with them for tours for at least 15 years
This live version is sped up by 15-20% compared to Studio Version.

Damn you liked my comment just as I was adding more to it so your like went away. Haha. Anyway, fun stuff. I wish you did a little more punk rock. Some really good bands. Not sure if it's totally your thing though.
It's a shame the lyrics come through so muddled in this recording, as I find they really help elevate the several changes in tone and pace throughout the piece. Then again, you really seem to enjoy their on-stage presence, which is clearly absent from the studio recordings.
I have a real punk song that’s 18 minutes long, if you’re up for the challenge :)

Nofx , the decline 18 min ,one song 😊
You do know that NIN is a one piece except on tour right?
You do know that NIN was a 1 person band, and the first Foo Fighters album was 1 person?
They steal a riff from black sabbath in this. Children of the grave
The problem you have here, imo, is that the track is pretty much the start of concept album 'American Idiot'. Listening to the whole album is pretty much a necessity. Great review however. 👌
It's not really a 'song', to be fair. It's 5 bits put together, like The Beatles did at the end of Abbey Road, which is fine - and I always loved it - but there you go..
Do yourself a favour and listen to the album version.
B r u h who is requesting some of these versions of songs? Yall are paying and waiting for so long and don't even have enough good judgement to request a decent version. This is your first Green Day reaction DH and def should've been the studio version. I can only apologise that it wasn't, hopefully future requesters have a bit more sense 🙄

Well to be fair, this request was made back when requesting was free, so nobody had to pay for it. It got bumped up to the top because it won a Prioritization Poll, so it was voted up to the front of the line.

This is 1 of 2 mixed ballads that Green Day put on an album. The other one is called Homecoming and it's just as good. In my personal opinion I like Jesus Of Suburbia more, but Homecoming is also amazing you should check that 1 out too. But to be real just listen to Green Day and you'll be satisfied. The song is irrelevant. Unfortunately I had to downvote this and I won't watch It. Because anybody that makes music reactions should be intelligent enough to know that you don't make reactions to live versions......EVER. We don't request that you listen to the shittiest possible version of a song. Listen to the song we WANT you to Listen to. The Studio version ONLY. So you can give us an honest opinion on the song and the music. On something WORTH HEARING. You only listen to live music in person. It's pointless otherwise. Listening after the performance of a live version is simply ALWAYS subpar to recorded versions. Its so certain it may as well be a law of nature. Do better. Especially with amazing bands like Greenday.

I used the specific link the requester gave me to use. This is the exact video the requester wanted me to use. Sorry if you don't like it, but you didn't make the request.
