It was loud but fun getting a chance to talk drums with Tre Cool at NAMM.
Tré Cool is the drummer for multi-platinum, Grammy® Award winning band Green Day. Even though Green Day had released two records prior (1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994's Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance.
Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod, and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations(winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, which won a 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold "Know Your Enemy," which was the first song ever to top Billboard's Rock, Alternative, and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously, and the double-platinum "21 Guns," which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist.
Later that year, Green Day collaborated with Tony Award winning director of Spring Awakening, Michael Mayer, for the stage musical of American Idiot. The play bowed at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009 and set attendance records during its limited engagement. The play went on to Broadway and ran for a year at the St. James Theatre and won two Tony Awards. The North American Tour of the stage musical launched in December in Toronto, Ontario and Cool will return to the studio this year to record Green Day's next studio album.

"It's not that hard, man. It's just drumming." Stewart Copeland said something similar, and, as a drummer, it remains a mystery to me that drumming is somehow 'just drumming'.. That said, I appreciate that it comes easily to some people.

This infuriates me so much. Drumming seems to be something some people can just do, like its in their DNA or something. I have a friend who had never played an instrument in his life, and I put him behind a kit and we got through a 5 song set of Ramones covers. I know its not the most technical stuff, but this man had literally never played any kind of musical instrument before this, and he was doing fucking good. Crashes were consistent, his bass and snare were nearly always perfectly in beat, he even kept a steady hi-hat going. Meanwhile I've been practicing for months and still find myself losing the rhythm now and there.

I find it kind of funny when punk bands play with click's because you almost think can they even keep on time with out it, also what he said about laying a solid drum foundation for a song and then add to it. I saw and interview with Jordan Burns from Strung Out and they asked what would be good advice for a drummer and he said become a solid drummer first and worry about all the flash later.

How is Phil Collin's kit big? it is rather small,it is only 7 drums...tre has a five piece kit standard kit...so OOoo WOW Phil's kit has only 2 more drums ...and that somehow equals really big kit to them? and the phrase "wouldn't know what to do with that kit,its crazy"....they have strange thinking to say the least
