Green Beret Silver Star Destroying Tanks w/ Javelin | Hearts and Minds Podcast | Jeff Adamec

Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more!
Today we hear the Combat Story of Jeff Adamec, a longtime Green Beret with six combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan as an 18B and a K9 handler.
Jeff earned the Silver Star during the Battle of Debeka Pass in Iraq in 2003 during his first deployment. In his final deployment, Jeff was knocked unconscious by an RPG during a gunfight in Afghanistan while based out of FOB Cobra. He broke his back in four places and was medically retired for those injuries and the TBI sustained as a result.
He went on to find success in the corporate sector in network engineering and logistics and hosts the Changing Hearts and Minds podcast that focuses on military history of all eras prior to 1995. Jeff’s understanding of military history and weaponry absolutely shines through in this episode and will, I hope, attract some more listeners to his podcast.
I hope you enjoy this fast paced and wide ranging interview with Jeff as much as I did.

My daddy was World War II Navy a chief petty officer. He spent 26 years in the navy. He and his friends would get together and they would tell their stories. Let me tell you what a riot it was! And so has his daughter I still love listening to these stories from our servicemen and women. It's important that we hear them

Listening to this has helped me understand my best friend that is a combat veteran. I have PTSD from childhood trauma. His is from combat. We have no contact anymore and listening to all these vets talk is helping me understand his side. Thanks to all vets . I tried to be a Marine but I also have ADHD so my dream wasn’t going to happen. Thanks ………David Paul from west Cincinnati.

I have been watching your podcast for a year now. I have not been in the military nor do I know anyone in the military. I’m just a Vegas housewife but I am ADDICTED to hearing these stories of truly fascinating, BRAVE and heroic people. It’s a true eye opener for the “average person”. Also, I just hafta say you have a great voice, good hair (LOL) and the perfect decorum for a podcast. You were meant to do this. My husband and I are die hard fans. ❤

Hey Ryan, Just a shout out for what you're doing. I'm very impressed with your interview skills and the obvious enthusiasm/empathy with your courageous guests. It shows with the rapport you're able to achieve with all the vets. As I have watched each video I tell myself that is my favorite but then the next one follows and I then realize each one has it's own merit. As a vet who never was in combat I realize I was lucky when I hear all the after effects they experience. It makes me understand more about why my brother had changed so much after Viet Nam.

Very relaxed and humble story Sir. Thank you, for sharing your experiences and for your service 🙏 besides world war II films I think the first film I saw about Vietnam was the Green Berets, obviously with John Wayne starred in the film It had its unique perspective about that war when it wasn't very popular here in the United States with a lot of the younger people. But certainly painting the NVA as sneaky and ruthless with their booby traps etc was a real eye opener for a young teenager (too young to serve or be drafted in that war,) anyway my recollection is that they didn't glorify war but they certainly glorified or (paid tribute to the Green Berets).

I spent 7 years in Iraq and 1 year in Afghanistan in combat zones as a contractor. The Iraqi would Incase the mortar round in ice and place it in the tube. When the ice melted the round would fall in the tube and go off. By than the Iraqi people who setup the mortar was long gone. Trying to kill them in the position the mortar was fired was useless because no one would be there.

In short words: "If you are a surviving soldier you can tell a lot of stories feeling like a hero or you are DEAD!" I thik by all this political lies and misuse of soldiers you must be a strong character as a human to divide wrong from right so that you can stay at last in front of a mirror...❣️

1:01:05 you say the Pilot's got released n its policy and you wanted to say, if the pilots were out there that they did nothing wrong or wasn't their fault and they thought they were saving your lives, well yeah dude I hate to tell you and be brutally honest but you gave bad intel, bad Directions, and you weren't clear. There was two batches of Tanks, one set of abandon with friendlies and one area further away which is enemy, you failed to specify that to the pilots at all, which is hands down some of the most important info that should have been priority to mention. so I don't know brother I hate to say it but whoever was on that radio, that's on him. Just how you make it sound is like it's on the pilots, I mean you're not blaming them at all but the way your wording it kind of does sound like it's their fault, saying of they thought they were doing the right thing and saving lives. And sound like you're deflecting and still at the end say how, you cant ever come to blame them. Like wtf, no one should blame them. Just because they dropped the bombs but it's your fault because you gave the bad Intel and unclear information. I mean having two sets of Tanks, one with friendly and one an attacking force, I mean that is huge valuable information that needs to be clear! One set of Tanks is enemy, one set of Tanks is blown up abandoned with friendly Kurds. Smh they cant tell and cant tell the difference, they are going so fast. You're their eyes basically. So i just dont like that whole conversation and the tone and how u made it sound. Patronizing too.

The A-10 is the most commonly-involved US aircraft in fratricide events, followed by the AH-64 Apache. The A-10A didn’t have a lot of tools other than pilot’s eyeballs to PID and set up for a CAS run at the time. A-10C now has FLIR with Helmet-cueing and JTIDS/LINK-16, along with GPS. I have called in A-10A and F-16Cs for CAS. A-10s are actually a very slow-flying aircraft by design, meant to support helicopters from the Vietnam conflict problems they had with A-1 Skyraiders not being able to carry big enough weapons to bust tank chassis AAA like the ZSU-23-4. Jeff is making sure the pilots know that he doesn’t blame them for that incident, because there are many other incidents where they deliberately attacked friendly forces, even ignoring IFF signals that were common to Coalition per SOP (VS-17 panels on vehicles). It’s pretty clear you have no relevant experience in this area, so I would probably just erase your post.

I haven't really started to listen to this, but I'm already pissed off. I never got to shoot a javelin while I was in. That was the one weapon system I truly wanted to fire at least once.. It's just so f****** cool coming out of there all slow like and than pew. Gone. Can't wait to hear the rest of this, although I'm going to be a little bitter that I never got to shoot that thing. The back... That is what got so many of us. Three back surgeries . RLTW 3/75

We had this E-5 not show up to work one day when we were doing ranges at Bragg, so I had to cover down on a detail he had been assigned to after I just got done running a zero range all day. My PSG had me and some PFCs in a Cargo HMMWV do go guard some ammo at another range. As we were pulling up to that range, we saw Javelins being launched off in rapid succession, as if they were as common a .22LR. We get to the range, and there’s a flat bed truck packed with pallets of Javelins. These guys in all kinds of civilian clothing, flight suits, and sterile BDUs with sleeve pockets are firing off not only Javelins, but the Hk GMG 40mm off a tripod, RPGs over on the left side of the range, AKs, Hk G3s, and not a one of them had a military vehicle. I had never seen anything like it. They almost let me fire off some RPG rounds, but the launcher was too hot from being fired repeatedly.

A Javelin Missile does not cost $20 Million!!!! 😂😂 cmon man! You’re a retired special forces 3rd group and you think that one javelin missile costs $20 million, you think they go crazy on the budget like that? They cost a little under $200k which is still expensive! So you did fire millions of dollars worth all together! But I’ve heard that the beginning ones who closer to the $120k price point per missile. It’s the clu that is the expensive part, the extra missiles to reload only cost $78k per. So the real money comes from the original setup of the clu. Such an OP weapon to have, I’m say all you have to do is give 20 guys like 25 javelins and 10 mini guns and 10 50 cals along with other weaponry like rpgs, 240 grenade launchers, I mean, think about how expensive just one of those 2,000 bombs are! And they have to go through hell just to get one too. Might as well just go stupid with the guns and ammo because it’s the cheapest shit competent to one jet and the fuel alone. Never give up the AC-130 though, I believe that every freaking oda should have one whenever they leave the wire because that is the f’ing baddest machine!
