Greek Music of Byzantine Empire

Музыка

The music of Greece is as diverse and celebrated as its history. Greek music separates into two parts: Greek traditional music and Byzantine music, with more eastern sounds. These compositions have existed for millennia: they originated in the Byzantine period and Greek antiquity; there is a continuous development which appears in the language, the rhythm, the structure and the melody. Music is a significant aspect of Hellenic culture, both within Greece and in the diaspora. Greek musical history extends far back into ancient Greece, since music was a major part of ancient Greek theater. Later influences from the Roman Empire, Eastern Europe and the Byzantine Empire changed the form and style of Greek music. Greek folk traditions are said to derive from the music played by ancient Greeks. There are said to be two musical movements in Greek folk music: Acritic songs and Klephtic songs. Akritic music comes from the 9th century akrites, or border guards of the Byzantine Empire. Following the end of the Byzantine period, klephtic music arose before the Greek Revolution, developed among the kleftes, warriors who fought against the Ottoman Empire. Klephtic music is monophonic and uses no harmonic accompaniment.

The Byzantine Greeks (or Byzantines) were a medieval Greek-speaking Orthodox Christian people. They were the main inhabitants of the lands of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire), of Constantinople and Asia Minor (modern Turkey), the Greek islands, Cyprus, and portions of the southern Balkans, and formed large minorities, or pluralities, in the coastal urban centres of the Levant and northern Egypt. Throughout the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Greeks self-identified as Rhōmaîoi ("Romans"), but are referred to as "Byzantines" and "Byzantine Greeks" in modern historiography. The Ottomans had begun their conquest of the Balkans and Greece in the late 14th century and early 15th century. In 1445, Ottoman-occupied Thessaly was recaptured by future emperor Constantine XI, at the time despot of Mystras, but there was little he could do against most of the other Ottoman territories. Emperor Constantine was defeated and killed in 1453 when the Ottomans finally captured Constantinople. After the fall of Constantinople, the Ottomans also captured Athens and the Aegean islands by 1458, but left a Byzantine despotate in the Peloponnese until 1460. The Venetians still controlled Crete and some ports, but otherwise the Ottomans controlled many regions of Greece except the mountains and heavily forested areas.

@@Universal.. You truly believe that Albanian Emperors existed? The Flag you used to give us an example of Illyrian Origin isn't correct cause the people who live in Illyrian Teritories (today) have origins that come from Northern Europe (Slavs,Bulgars) and even from Asia like the Albans. Illyria in the early ages of the Roman Empire was civilized by tribes who are now called Greeks. The Byzantine Empire destroyed and it's lands were taken by foreign Tribes (mostly by Mongol Tribes like Turks) and other modern-day Balkanian Tribes. So Emperors with Illyrian Origins were nothing more than Greeks

My guitar teacher afterwards told me that this scale is known as the “Byzantine scale”. This is why I came here to look it up. It makes sense that my musical intuition would lead me here because my mother is a Greek Cypriot and I guess this music must’ve impacted me, especially as a child. But now I am off to try and write my original, progressive Rock music, that will be heavily influenced by the Byzantine scale!

@HellenicNationalist spread Christianity to whom? Slavs? Big deal :D part of your history (and mine too) yes, unfortunately.. Greece was strong? haahaha no, rather Byzantines had more intresting things to do like campaigns in Persia, the exactly same centuries that a huge (if not most of) Greece suffered by Slavic raids, for which Byzantines started getting intrested at, nearly after 2 centuries the last time that Greece was strong was in Peloponnesian wars, or under Alexander the great. The near eastern Armeno-anatolian empire would never even care about Greece

@HellenicNationalist that's what we learned in gymnasium, but with a small research you can find that with the exception of anatolian coasts, which hardly made up 30% of anatolian population, the vast majority of anatolian population was not Greek, they were phrygians lydians cappadokians hettites gallates etc, and no, they didn't care about Greece. It was byzantine empire which attacked Persians first, in a period that mainland and nearby islands suffered from slavs. There hardly was a 3% Greek originated emperors in the Empire, the vast majority were Armenians and non-greek anatolians. Greeks are not middle eastern people, and the core of their mentality is liberal like most of Europe. In contrast to that byzantine elite as non Greek was DESPOTIC, and despotism was a trait that ancient Greeks attributed to oriental people Worth mentioning that the term Hellen was negative in byzantium The easy way is to classify a political entity by its language, but like it or not, language makes byzantine empire Greek as much as English make the EU British. Heraclius made Greek the official language in byzantium because there was no Latin speaking population, meanwhile anatolians had adopted Greek since the time of Romans And what Greek civilization did byzantine empire have? How many Parthenons did the byzantines build? Can you show me any ancient Greek building similar to hagia Sofia? What has ancient Greek statue to do with byzantine icon? You can call yourself nationalist only when you will understand what a failure the dumb called byzantium was and how alien its spirit was for ancient Greece

That isn't how it works. The culture it was based on is dead and gone. The closest you would get is a crumbling of states and the Orthodox church stepping in as the major power in the region and setting up a government and ruler which conforms to their culture. But that would not be the Eastern Roman Empire, it would be its own empire in its own time and place. I die inside to think I don't live in the late 19th century in the northeast United States. I literally ache when I think of it. But its never coming back.

Then the other foreign scientists (apart from Serbia), qualified the halogroup I of not Illyrian and which is not native of the Balkans. Exemple : I2 ( not Illyrians ) = Older research considered that the high frequency of this subclade in South Slavic-speaking populations was the result of a "pre-Slavic" Paleolithic settlement in the region, the research conducted by OM Utevska (2017) confirmed that haplogroup STR haplotypes have the greatest diversity in Ukraine , with the result of the ancestral STR marker "DYS448 = 20" including "Dnieper -Carpathian "cluster, while the younger derived result" DYS448 = 19 "including the" Balkan cluster "which is predominant among the South Slavs. This "Balkan cluster" also has the highest variance in Ukraine, indicating that the very high frequency in the Western Balkans is due to a founder effect . Utevska calculated that the divergence of the STR groups and its secondary expansion from the middle course of the Dnieper or Eastern Carpathians to the Balkan Peninsula occurred about 2,860 ± 730 years ago, reporting back to the time before the Slavs, but well after the decline of the Cucuteni - Trypillia culture . Source : Fóthi, E .; Gonzalez, A .; Fehér, T.; et al. (2020), "Genetic analysis of male Hungarian conquerors: European and Asian paternal lineages of conquering Hungarian tribes", Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences , (I2a, or, more specifically, the South-Slavic subclade of I2a, I2a-L621, is not 'Illyrian'. There are some dubious websites claiming it, but it's wrong. ... From there, it spread to the Balkans with the Slavic migration, via founder effect, leading to todays high frequencies among Croats, Bosniaks, Serbs etc.) E-V13 (Haplogroup E) is one of the Haplogroups that were common among Illyrians, yes. E-V13 as Haplogroup Y originated from the so-called Neolithic settlers, who entered the Balkans from Anatolia about 8500 years ago. These Neolithic settlers were the founders of the Minoan civilization, the first European civilization in history. They also played a major role in the ethnogenesis of the Mycenaeans, Greeks, Thracians, Dacians and Illyrians that followed. E-V13 is one of the haplogroups that were common among the Illyrians, yes. Thus, although E-V13 is not exclusively "Illyrian" but rather paleobalkanic in general, it was one of the main Illyrian y-DNA haplogroups. In addition to E-V13, the Illyrians probably possessed the haplogroup R1b, originating from the Indo-European which gave them their languages, to the Thracians and Greeks, and J2b, another Mediterranean Neolithic haplogroup common to today's Albanians, Greeks and Italians, among others. It is also worth mentioning that the three haplogroups so typical for today's Albanians have also been found in Neolithic and Bronze Age remains on the eastern coast of the Adriatic (ancient Illyria) ! : E1b1 (Haplogroup E) - R1b - J2b2 . - source : ( The genomic history of Southeast Europe ) However, research on genetics is not reliable because there are several hypotheses.

The Illyrians 🇦🇱 contributed a lot to the Roman/Byzantine Empire 🦅 (Fearsome Warriors). Here is the list of Roman Emperors 🤴 of Illyrian origin (🇦🇱): - Justinian I - Justin I - Anastasius I - Marcianus - Valentinian II - Gratian - Valens - Valentinian I - Jovian - Constantius II - Constantine the Great - Maximianus "Herculius - Diocletian - Probus - Aurelian - Quintillus - Claudius II "Gothicus - Hostilianus - Decius Source: The Grand Strategy of the Roman Empire: From the First Century A.D. to the Third by Edward N. Luttwak, page 178, "high-grade cavalry (equites Illyriciani)" This region was late Romanized. It was famous for its excellent soldiers, frustrated but courageous. In Illyria (in the geographical sense) was indeed the most powerful of the Roman armies, in charge of watching over the Danube (nearly 12 legions, that is to say 130 000 men)....

Nope they did not, only the cities names..and most of them stull the same..they did not force you to use the new names...if it were like you said, many of the peoples names woyld have beeen changed in Greek or Balknians..but the Bulgarian governments forced the turkish minority do deny their turkish heritage and made them.believe that they were muslim bulgarians..you can not bear to see a muslim turkish minority in your caountry, can you?Although they are pesceful people who just want to live their own countries in small villages..I tell you this is a very disturbing sickness who also eats its owner like cancer...it is called facism..and one can not discuss anyting with a rypical fachist because they are so bigoted, narrow minded and prejiduced..
