2004-2006 was mythical for Greece: 2004 Euro champions in football, won an astonishing (for a 10 million country) 17 medals at the Olympics (6 gold) ranking 15th overall and 2nd in medals per Capita. 2005 Greece basketball wins EuroBasket and Eurovision and in 2006 this. Also hosted the best Olympics ever according to many in 2004.

@@Definitely_Someone Nah, you lost fair and square. Spain also had an extremely tough match against Argentina in the semis with Ginobili who was a two time NBA champion with the Spurs at that moment. Also, Spain's best player Pau Gasol was injured and missed the final and still Spain kicked Greece's ass. Spain was just too good during that World Cup. So stop making excuses.

Precision, smart defense and game awareness were their strong attributes. They didn't have the tough physical play most NBA players have, but if you let them roll their game, they will wipe the floor with you. Don't believe me? They had no idea about that Greek team and they paid it...Arrogant people...once again Greece teaches you ;)

The Greeks have proven once more what they have been doing for thousands of years now; winning and prevailing against all odds. Besides the Greek excellent and well studied game, interesting were the faces of the USA players; arrogant and disrespectful at the beginning but worried and bewildered when they had realised that they might have lost the game. Respect however to the very talented USA players. As regards the commentator, he knew nothing about the Greek players besides their names and he did not give them the respect they truly deserved.

the refs tried to help us a bit but u cant win vs those threes, but the commentary wasnt too biased vs the greece , like other games i saw

Grece destroyed team USA defense through good passing, shooting well, off ball movement and not dribbling too much.

Real talk: This is one of those games that definitely inspired a young Giannis. I was 18 at the time, I remember watching the game all alone in my small uni flat and I couldn't stop laughing and dancing.

Big love for the Greece team. Gotta love the reactions of them cocky players when they loose

the two highlights that unfroze and "woke up" greece 29:59 missed dunk from soft and block from diamantidis 34:09 assist from papaloukas, dunk from sofo after that onwards, the game was a joy to watch 48:26 THAT stepback, omg...

Everyone says Diamantidis, Spanoulis, Papaloukas Legends etc but in this team there were also many other very good players like Shortsianitis,Zisis, Fotsis, Papadopoulos, Kakiouzis etc. Without these players Greece wouldn't reached the final.

Football is far more famous but we are talented in basketball, and people love the basketball team more that the football one. Of course it has to do with the fact that we won a European championship in 1987.

basketball is not the #1 sport in American. American Football is the #1 sport and it is not even close. After the NFL, College Football is the 2nd most popular sport. You obviously don't know US sports at all.

for those who knew about international bball it wasnt such a HUGE surprise , in 2004 it was close with 77-71 , in 2005 greece beat everyone and took the gold in eurobasket , papaloukas/diamantidis/spanoulis euro legends at almost nba starter level .and all the other key players were nba bench/role level players , greece played exceptionally well , and if these same teams played 10 times dont bet that usa would win more than 4-5 , the best greek TEAM ever , team usa with superstars but not huge experience and team bonding back then , great game

This is Greeeeeeeece! Greek Gods were with us that unforgetable day. Our Boys taught the arogant (and millioners) American NBA players a great lesson they will never forget. If only we had Efthimios Rentzias, our best center, in our team. Congratulations guys even after 15 years.

Arrogance by Team USA. Especially the staff. They thought they could just play iso ball 4 quarters and beat Greece. Came way under-prepared. Defense was shocking, so many easy open shots for Greece, and no structure offensively just Americans taking turns 1 on 1. P.S.: that US commentator is the best. Was almost rooting for Greece.

The USA team has been beaten before,since 2002(by Argentina),not once,Greece was a reigning European champion,very good and solid team,stacked with a great players at each position(Spanoulis,Papaloukas,Diamantidis,Fotsis,Papadopoulos,Dikoudis,Sofo),plus the USA team were outplayed tactically in coaching by Giannakis,so it wasn't such a surprise.

Legendary Game I Watched it live back in 06 and just by chance I had recorded on a VCR back then. turned out to be the best decisions I've ever made lol. bring back a lot of memories because I would watch after school and then hit the courts and play with random dudes who were much older than me good times

For people talking about Spain. Guys.. it is obvious that this over here is the final of 2006's world cup. These are the best teams of the tournament. I haven t even wayched the Spain game, i just know they didnt play hard..who cares, we blew out the tyrant, and thats what matters.

Being Greek, this is my favourite basketball game of all time. This is the best greek national team ever, because even though we didn't have a Hall of Famer such as Nick Galis or a superstar like Giannis Antetokounmpo, we had a deep roster which was more than capable on defence and there was a variety of players who could carry the offensive load. Now, being an NBA fan, I wasn't able to follow the NBA consistently back then as I do now, so this was the first tournament I ever got to see LeBron James play and thus I didn't get the hype about LBJ, so having this as the first impression, I wasn't a big fan of him ever since (even though he turned out to be one of the all time greats). On the contrary, I did watch the '06 NBA finals and I was instantly hooked by Dwyane Wade's performance in those finals series and he was the one player I was worried about in this particular game. Last but not least, I was always kind of Meh-ish about Melo. I consider him as a good player, but I've never considered him as a great player.

All the USA Olympic Teams since 1992 were better than this team, except the 2004 one. USA tends to pick younger stars for the FIBA world cup. I'm Greek but I'm not delusional.

My countrymen had three sensational passers.Diamantidis, Spanoulis and true floor general in Papaloukas.

This is so legendary...For all the basketball buffs like me self!

This was the best generation of Greek basketball and with experience. On the other side USA had one of their best generations, but with luck of experience.Greece played one of the best (if not the best) game ever played. USA did not play a good game that night.

Andreas Papadakis Yes, probably the 1984 team would lost the game against this Greek performance and in a neutral court. I don’t think that they drop the towel though. They did fight till the end of the game. Now, about the gaming style that you refer to, actually that was a transition time for NBA, going from a sane 3 point shooting to today’s insane 3 point shooting. The luck of big 3 point shooters was an issue for the old USA teams.

I remember I was in first grade (in Greece) when the game was played. We didn't have class the final one or two hours and I remember some sixth graders sitting around a radio listening. Such an atmosphere! I couldn't really understand the patriotism back then, but the tension in the air will always be in my memory.

The USA was a powerhouse with Le Bron (31.4 ppg that year in the NBA), Dwayne Wade (2006 NBA champion and Finals MVP), a top-form Carmelo (26.5 ppg), Dwight Howard (2nd in rebounding in the NBA with 12.5 rpg), Chris Bosh (22.5 ppg), Chris Paul (Rookie of the year), Elton Brand (10 rpg that year), Shane Battier (81 games for the Grizzlies who later became 2x NBA Champion) and Antawn Jamison (82 games for the Wizards, 20.5 ppg and 9.3 reb) and YET they still got outclassed by the Greek team...! What an incredible feat! As a Greek, I'll never forget that night.

Nick Galis although 3 inches shorter is a way better rim attacking sg that Wade,,period..His mid air adjustments are more ballanced and his strength to absorb body contact greater..he also never misses the rim from his eyes so even some of his impossible circus shots were successfull...he can also hide the ball from the defender to his side or undernrath his body and bring it up when its too late for the defender to do anything...too bad he didnt sign that Nets contract..

One of the most epic wins ever! Schortsianitis, Papaloukas, Spanoulis, Diamantidis, Papadopoulos....Legendary team! Now...imagine how good was Spain to destroy Greece without prime Pau Gasol in the final....

yeah and If my grandma had wheels she would probably be a car, USA team still had big NBA names in their team...period you have to accept your loses with dignity that's what sports is about.... 'If' are just excuses,in the finals Hellas lost from Spain,they were better,you accepted and move on

This eliminated the 🐐 debate for LeBron. Not only was his woeful this game but all tournament. He was probably their 3rd best behind Carmelo and Wade. Nobody can do what Jordan did and accomplished. People should just leave that man's name alone.
