Greece: EU’s New Camp for Migrants on the Island of Samos is Like a Prison

Refugees and asylum seekers are trapped in camps in miserable living conditions on the Greek islands, and, despite promises of change, the European Union (EU) is instead doubling down on its inhumane containment policies.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) general director Stephen Cornish recently visited the new Multi-Purpose Reception and Identification Center that's being constructed for refugees on the Greek island of Samos. This new prison-like camp is intentionally more isolated than existing facilities, with increased security, surveillance, and segregation from the rest of society that will limit access to essential services and remove any agency or semblance of a “normal life.”
“This is the new approach to migration in Europe, where we are seeking to criminalize, to humiliate, and to punish the refugees and asylum seekers rather than to extend their rights,” said Cornish. “It's time for citizens to see what's happening with their taxpayer money and to instead of investing in this kind of criminalization, invest in a caring, dignified approach to asylum seekers and refugees arriving in Europe.” Read more at bit.ly/3gsrmMv

Having humane places for refugees to stay needs money and Greece doesn't have any. Europe does send decent amounds but most of it ends in the pockets of politicians

Prison-like camp? No papers, no visas. They're lucky to even be allowed in.

This is now a common knowledge. It's not desirable to be in a place like this, in person simply because of seeking safety and Asylum. But at least they have a shelter there and hopefully are also provided with their basic needs and most importantly their situation is clear. For some of us, they have made the situation even worse than what you present here. If MSF really cares about Refugees, I wonder where you were while I have been on a nearly 4 years protest at the door of the UNHCR's main office just 100 meters away from your main office in Athens! I have now effectively been without shelter since May because they destroyed my shelters there and I can no longer afford to pay for another shelter. Yet, despite all this and regardless of reaching out to all the actors in person, one of them your organization, still nobody is willing to offer any help. I would say you are all in this together. Profiting from what is happening and our life, our safety and well-being never mattered to anyone of you at all.

well, this is what we sometimes see from NGO organisations: Trying to make their case with false information. First: the new camp in Samos is not at jail. Refugees and asylum seekers er free to leave the camp, as long as they return and sleep there. The quarters are quite fine and up to date, but off course it was easier to show footage from the old camp, where the living conditions was very bad, than actually show footage from the new camp. And yes, there are fences and access control. These are people with no passport or other identity papers, and as soon as their identity is established, they are shipped of to other parts of Greece. A well known and respected organisation like Doctors Without Borders should be better at refraining from spreading false information.
