Greccio was founded, according to tradition, by a Greek colony or family, who fled or exiled from their homeland following wars and destruction who fell in love with the amenity of the place and the comfort of natural defense it offered, and settled there. Hence the name Greece, Grece, Grecce and finally Greccio.
The first certain information dates back to the 10-11th century. when the fragmentary possessions of the Abbey of Farfa were reunited and the fortification of the curtis proceeded. The Benedictine monk Gregorio da Catino (1062-1133) refers to the locality of Greccio (curte de Greccia) in his work "Regesto Farfense".
From the remains of the ancient buildings it can be seen that Greccio became a fortified medieval castle surrounded by walls and protected by six fortress towers. It had to sustain fierce fights with neighboring countries and suffered destruction by the soldiers of Frederick II in 1242.
Between 1223 and 1226, Greccio hosted Francis of Assisi several times, who here recalled the representation of the Nativity scene for the first time.
The saint loved to visit these places for the beauty of the landscape, which reminded him so much of that of Palestine where he had visited, and for the simplicity of the inhabitants of the country.
The representation of the crib was the pretext to send a "political" message to Pope Honorius III, who at that time resided in nearby Rieti: it is not necessary to reconquer the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem by means of the Crusades, because the birth of Jesus can be commemorated everywhere
In the 14th century the town is mentioned several times in the municipal statute of Rieti and in the papers of the cathedral archives, as the seat of the podestà. It underwent ups and downs until 1799 when it was again destroyed and sacked by the Napoleonic army.
Today it's a beautiful little town, famous for its Christmas cribs (I hope to film them at Christmas too!)

Thank you, Riccardo, for taking us for a walk in this beautiful little town, which I would never have known existed. St Francis of Assisi is my favourite saint (not for religious reasons), but because he's a lover of animals 🐈🐇🐕🐑 That would be amazing if you could take us on a walk at Christmas time to see the presepi in some of the towns 😊 (a Christmas present) Again, awesome drone intro👍

Grazie mille Riccardo!

Love it just want to pack up sell the house move to Italy…. I have always had a interest in St Francis I went to school in a tiny Irish village and there was a painting hanging at the back of the classroom of St Francis and every single day I would have to stand and look at the painting I was only 4 but something caught my imagination and I had lots of questions and I wanted to go to Assisi and finally 3 years ago I got there and it was the best day ever I loved it. I also collect nativity sets and hadn’t made the connection with St Francis until a few years ago. Now I get to see the town where St Francis held the first nativity. At 4:30pm are most people in their houses for the evening? It seems the tourists have gone for the season so there's not much reason for shops to stay open. It's a very peaceful town. Indeed, go back during the Christmas festivities.

Indeed Sharon, it was a little more quieter than I expected, but loved it very much this way actually. I'll try!

Dear Sharon! Let me bring to your attention a film that Luca Ventrella shot in a small alpine house near the Swiss border. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hGd-scWgZtbcfdo.html Appreciate his laconic style and culinary skills. No translation required.

@@sharonlouisedoud9769 Dear Sharon! Perhaps the atmosphere of this film will seem pleasant to you and you can even feel the taste and aroma of a simple but nutritious rural dinner ... In our place such films are readily watched by residents of large cities, tired of noise and surrogate food.

@@vegavit2984 Would you believe that it was the lack of noise and too many people that first drew me to Still Wanderer? Although I haven't had to live in a large city for many years, I'm drawn also to further watch the video you suggest.
