@@Finis.Terrae That is not true at all, they have advanced greatly since then. Had you seen those trailers in full HD on todays monitors you'd see flaws. That being said its all about the creation, lights, angles, filters and how they are used. Any CGI from any decade will look bad if its in the wrong hands

There has not been much improvement in graphics over the last 5-10 years, not to be confused with playing on larger resolutions and/or higher frame rates.

That moment in The Old Republic trailer when he realises what he has just done is gut wrenching. The music syncing with the change of his eye gives me goosebumps everytime

The For honor trailer is an absolute masterpiece, how they switch from one faction to the other, from one type of warrior to another, the chaos.. everything... Just wish i could say the same for the game itself

Check out some of the 4k upscaled vids using AI. Incredible how much more detail all the vids can get, when in the original there were just blurs or smudged details.

I partly agree with you in alot of aspects The World of Warcraft - Lich king Cinematics is on a shelf with a few others that has seen no peers. The Video that is in this list (dreanor) aint even in the same league. WOTLK is for me even better than the Burning crusade that i held close for a long time and is at breaking point of Diablo II cinematics (for instance the best of em : Act III). Conclusion is simple, Blizzard / Blizzard North before Activision bought our future and killed it was ALWAYS the best.

That is a piece of ART down to the smallest details. The brothers hold hands the same way over and over, helping up each other, until the last time, that last moment together. This short cinematic holds more passion and a more tragic story than all of the trash Hollywood produced in the last 10 years.

Wraith is better on lore, but the cinematic isn't as good. You see a guy wake up from a nap, wake a dragon from the ground, and a bunch of undead goons do a fist bump. It would have been better to incorporate some action in. WOD might be meh on lore, but the cinematic is a masterpiece

I've watched the WoW "Warlords" Cinematic at least 10 times over the years and though I truly love ALL of the Cins Blizz have made, this one I still think tops the rest. Everything in it clicks, the artistry, the superb action, the importance of the characters involved, the voicework (oh man, the voicework) and the awesome backdrop theme music, just all blends into a glorious show. :)

This is a thing about Activition Blizzard. They have been wanting to create a cinematic series of movies from most of their work, but the sheer cost of the production and distribution is off-putting to say the least. The movie Warcraft the Beginning is just an example of how off-putting the price tag on Blizzard's movie can be as they were forced to use actors and adapt the scenario to a simpler setup than they wanted due to the production cost skyrocketing through the sky. As one of my friend in movie production said: Activision Blizzard has a lot of talents in creating original stories and designs, but they don't have what it takes to make a commercially good movie. It's not about the talent to render stuff or the story or how cool looking stuff is looks, but about how you can make the content flow in a great way from start to finish, but while staying within the length desired and all that with as little change to the environment as possible because, in movies, changes is the costing bit.

2:25 I still crying everytime I see the trailer to "Heart of the Swarm" . It was not just a crazily animated trailer, it was the long awaited revenge on mengsk and the continued story of Kerrigan and Raynor!

as soon as i seen force unleashed, went straight to it. My opinion, this is the only trailer that still gives me goosebumps. And to top it off, thats how the game actually plays! Love it!

I remember there was a time that every gaming shop had the DC Universe Online intro playing on loop forever, that intro was amazing at that time, for me it's one of the best game cinematics ever.

That drop ship trooper cinematic for planetside is still one of the best for me. And I’ve never even played Planetside.

Blizzard knows how to make good cinematics. Literally had some revolutionary cinematics for their time in the early days.

dunno man, if compare something like sc1 cgs with something like parasite eve which released earlier, its not even fair how far ahead PE was. and if you compare the later games from square? ff viii and ix? and that's on a psx! then there was ffx and kingdom hearts 1 and 2.

The opening cinematic from the 2019 Battletech game is an underrated masterpiece of storytelling. It doesn't have super detailed visuals or epic action scenes. It doesn't even have a single line of dialogue. In about two minutes it recaps the story of a setting with decades of history and highlights its themes in a way that makes even long time fans of the setting tear up by bringing forth every emotion from the setting's many tales.

Okay but that whole sequence from 19:40 onwards is incredible and just feels so damn cool

eso was such a crazy game when it first came out, fighting in an open field 100v100 and then third faction come running it down. Was one of the first games where it felt like a big giant war happening. Sieging keeps with 100-200 people, defending one was truly great at the time.

When I saw the title of the video I knew that Starcraft 2 had to be there. Simply epic all its Cinematics.

I have to say, I wasn't ready to see only one WoW cinematic here. I was not prepared.

The Assassin creed was the best imo, the music with it is just insane.

That was the best thing I've seen from Star Wars since the original movies.

The Diablo IV with Lilith and the blood membrane cape deserves to be on here

I still love ToR's The Return cinematic. They have some of the best lightsaber battle choreography of any Star Wars product

The SWTOR one is from an expansion not from the original core game. But ALL of the cinematic trailers from SWTOR are amazing!

Final Fantasy 14: Realm Reborn is the best ever for me. The one with Bahamut exploding and destroying everything. SWTOR when the jedi is fighting Malgus and his Master is up there too. Assassins creed revelations i think was great as well

Wonderful cinematics here, great memories too.

Another great one is Onimusha 3 Demon Seige. The time that the trailer was released (2004) was beyond magnificent.

Star Craft and the Black Flag Assisans Creed Trailer were hands down short films, not even video games, just brilliant short films! They have a story in just a couple of min which some 2 hour films fail to do.

You could make a whole trilogy on just that one Star Wars the old republic cinematic

man force unleashed was on a different level back in the day, in both combat, and visuals. still really good 13 years later in both. i need a force unleashed 3. probably the best star wars game out there.

There are countless reasons to shame ubisoft but that that For Honor trailer is just amazing.

Diablo 2 still has the best cinematics ever along with Halo 2 anniversary edition. For years I wanted Diablo 2 to be a movie. The whole wanderer story and him becoming Diablo was magical

You picked some relatively recent stuff… for the most impressive stuff in history, I’d say the opening for the title screen of Mechwarrior 2, Command and Conquer Red Alert 1, 7th Guest Star Craft 1 and Half Life 1 were mind bogglingly awesome when they came out. Of course it’s not an apples to apples comparison, but I think those games deserve a shout out.

the opening cinematic with the song to Metal Gear Solid 2 is the greatest ever. i will accept no argument on that

Like many others here I struggle to understand the choice of the WoD over the WotLK cinematic. Draenor was longer and arguably visually more impressive by today's standards, but for long time fans of the Warcraft universe, the Wrath trailer had a much greater impact despite being a shorter cinematic. The fantastic narration by Arthas' father, the music, the scenery, and all put together with every move Arthas makes in the scenes - It's perfect.

I'm not a WoW fan, I only played vanilla but Wrath of The Lich King cinematic is with Mist of Pandaria my favorite WoW cinematic. Both of them have a very cinematographic style and have something unmatchable, they tell a story that don't need to know the lore to be understood (as the opposite of WoD, Shadowlands or Dragonflight)

There's just no argument to be made that the Lich King raising Sindragosa while King Menethil speaks in the background is a cooler spectacle than Grom Hellscream attacking Mannoroth with the Blackfuse Company's gadgets. "Ohhh I cast a spell on a dead body with my scary LichSkullPowerDeathSword! Ohhhh..." Please. Such a pretty boy under that helmet.

@@keamu8580 First of all I think you and I look for very different things in cinematics, and unlike me you don't seem to be interested or invested in Arthas' story, which makes this almost a needless discussion. Anyway: I don't think you understood what I wrote either, as the WoD cinematic being a "spectacle" was my point. You got to check off more boxes than "cool" to be concidered one of the greatest cinematics. If making an impact on the viewer was just about having them go; "Ooooh, things go boom boom, hell yeah!", then sure, it's great. But I was hardly invested in that story at all, so it was nothing more than a spectacle to me, with very little impact. Grom's story ended in WC3 as far as I'm concerned, and I've disliked Garrosh from the very beginning. He was a selfish, warmongering prick with no redeeming qualities, certainly not any I'd bother go looking for. So to me it was indeed just a spectacle with very little impact. So I don't think the spectacle makes it a better cinematic at all. I am a fan of Arthas' story, and I think the WotLK cinematic was a perfect re-introduction to bring him back from WC3. Feel free to read the OP again as to why. Though the Lich King certainly has no redeeming qualities, Arthas used to, and he had a far more interesting journey than Garrosh. You may disagree 100%, and that's fine, i don't mind. But to claim that the WoD cinematic is better than the WotLK as undisputable, that's a little silly. Especially if we're going by subjective standards.

Kudos for writing all that text. That reminds me of one time when I attended a picnic with my auntie Judith. I remember it like it was yesterday. “Here, put this in the basket.” Judith directed the children like a sergeant on D-Day. A flurry of activity centered in the kitchen as they prepared for the Annual Ladies Auxiliary picnic. She placed the container of floweret cut radishes in front of Cindy. Will was in charge of sandwiches. He opened a beautifully wrapped sandwich and took a bite. “Ew. What’s this?” Judith snatched the food from his hand. “These are cucumber sandwiches.” She placed the rest into the picnic basket. “I told you children that these are for the Ladies Auxiliary. Everything has to be perfect.” “Won’t there be hot dogs?” “I’m not sure,” she wiped down the counter with a tea towel. “I made you peanut butter and jelly just to be safe.” Cindy rolled her eyes, “What a stupid question, doofus. These are ladies, and they won’t have the yummy food like hotdogs and chips.” “But it’s a picnic.” “It’s not that kind of picnic.” She held out her pinky finger and put her nose in the air. “The hoity-toity will be there.” “That’s enough, kids.” Bill walked into the kitchen. He lifted the ice cooler and handed it to Cindy and Will. “Load this into the wagon.” The kids rushed out of the kitchen, eager to get away from their mother. Judith noticed Bill’s weary expression. She knew he worked hard, and it was because of her. Ever since her best friend Annie married a wealthy man, Judith wanted the same thing. “It looks like it might rain. Are you sure you want to go to this shindig?” Annoyance made her reply sharp. “This is a big deal, not everyone gets invited, you know.” Bill walked around the table and hugged her. “Judy, Judy, Judy,” he started his horrible Cary Grant imitation. She leaned into his hug. A shout from outside broke the moment. Bill sighed. “I got this. You finish here, and we’ll hit the road.” Judith carried the rest of the items out to the station wagon and overheard Bill talking to the kids as they cleaned up the mess. The cooler had tipped over, and everything was in the driveway. “…this is important to your mother. You two have to be on your best behavior the whole day.” “Why does she care about a bunch of old ladies?” Will ran in circles not really helping. Cindy crawled under the tailgate to retrieve a soda. “Ever since Aunt Annie joined them she’s always so mad.” “Aunt Annie used to be fun too.” He stopped spinning. “Is Mom going to stop being fun?” Cindy snorted, “She already did. And she’s not even in the club yet.” Ha ha, those were the days.

WoD for Warcraft's choice was ok but i think it could be better with Mist of Pandaria or even Battle of Azeroth. Yet... i know... WoW's lovers would choose WotLK but we speak about cinematic guys, not lore. No Diablo ? 😶

I definitely don't agree, MoP's cinematic is one of the worst in terms of character appearance. It's better than Dragonflight, but that isn't setting the bar high.

If you've never seen the opening cinematic to Onimusha 3: Demon Siege you NEED to see it. THAT is the greatest videogame cinematic ever made imo.

You only Missed the BEST one ever made, The Diablo 4 announcement Trailer...Sent shivers up my spine when I saw the look on Lilith's face as she surveyed the world in which she was newly "born" into and the crouching, humble figure in front of her. She took him in as one might look at an ant on the ground.
