@@boomstick1919 lol, I live in Buffalo, only like around the block from Quebec. Used to go up to Canada to see Zeppelin and Genesis tribute bands all the time when I was younger. I have no idea how these guys have have remained hidden so long, with 8 studio albums.

You made an EXCELLENT observation about prog rock catching on due to home hi-fi influences. Classical listeners and jazz listeners who had the disposable income already were into this, so it's no surprise to me that rock music with classical and jazz influences would join the party.

What really started it was the arrival of stereo.

Just discovered your channel. My intro to prog came from my older brothers love of The Moody Blues and Procal Harum, and my sisters love of The Beatles White album and her purchase of Fragile. I heard "Roundabout", but the track that did me in was "Heart of the Sunrise". From there I found Tubular Bells and my album collection began to grow. At 16 years (1972) while most of my friends were saving for their first car, I saved $600 for my first component stereo. Late snowy winter evenings with Tales from Topographic Oceans (through my much beloved Koss headphones) were magical! Of course I discovered King Crimson, Tull, Genesis, Geenslade, and Tangerine Dream (starting with Phaedra).. The list is, as they say endless! So thanks for this wonderful trip down memory lane!

One of the best things about 70s Prog Rock has to be the incredible artwork on those album covers 👌....you can see why Vinyl was king especially with those wonderful gatefold sleeves .

Yes it is the whole experience.

The truth is, the whole world was full of excellent prog. rock bands in the 1970s from Japan to South America, and from South Africa to Sweden. Thousands of excellent albums born at that times all over the planet Earth. I was a teenager boy in the 1970s and I feel I am very lucky adult guy now. 👍

So true. Lots of people have been recommending great prog bands from Italy (or course), France, Germany (Krautrock and beyond), and Scandinavia has produced many in more recent years. But, like you say, great bands all around the world.

I first started listening to Prog Rock when I was about fourteen. Bands like Jethro Tull, ELP, and King Crimson come into mind as being the first. I still liked pop music and rock n' roll, but this was special. A new and different way to see life and all its wonderful and mysterious ways that changed my consciousness. It lit a fire throughout me that will never change. Soon after I discovered Pink Floyd, Yes, and then finally Genesis - I was a goner! I was hooked! The two albums I listened to the most was Foxtrot and then Selling England by the Pound. So much so that I often drove my car to the foot of the Tucson Mountains (just behind where we lived), put the external speakers on the roof and laid myself out on the hood to take in the beauty and to dream. Keep up the reviews. I was amazed that I was not only agreeing with you, but at times knew which bands and what albums were next.

Yes...it was...and still is,something like feary tails for adults+... something near spiritual.Resolving some subconscious "issues". It was realy interesting....reviling...nice to listen. Still is👍🙂

A great list with some pleasant surprises. Prog is a gift that keeps on giving. I like your iconoclastic choices (I never thought of Frankie as a prog band even though i loved the album!). I've got my listening for the morning lined up. got a ticket booked on Big Big train. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the classic albums by Renaissance (except the first, perhaps only because it's a different band). I'll be back for part 2!

I totally agree with your analysis of prog music. These musicians were serious musicians that were masters of their instruments and the complexity of the music takes a listener that is more bent toward classical music than straight up rock & roll. This music touches your soul and your spirit! I’ve seen Genesis, Yes, ELP, Kansas, in the 70s and Steve Hackett lately. Otherworldly experiences.

Very good review. I've loved prog almost as long as you but you've got a much broader experience; I'm definitely going to check out some of these suggestions, cheers. For me Yes's greatest album is Fragile which is superior in every way to The Yes Album. However, you've persuaded me to give Close to the Edge one more chance. I'm also going to try Supertramp and Barclay James Harvest. Thanks for the recommendations!

Still Life sets the bar for prog...The title track, La Rossa, Childlike Faith in Childhoods end has the most profound lyrics in the genre...But VDGG is to Prog what Sabbath is to metal...Godbluff, H to He, Pawn Hearts, et al. are all unsurpassed in the prog sound; overall...Every great prog band has their master works :)..I love that you have Lizard behind you...I of course subtract Yes or Genesis, they're basically in their own genre... The Lamb is the single greatest album ever produced by a musical group...I've spent decades absorbing every nuance of it...It's beauty from the opening of the Lamb to "It" moves me and I have to hear the entire album whenever I play it...:)

It's true, I'm 65' and was lucky to be born at the right time to have seen most every Classic Prog and Rock band many times from Boston, Ct to NYC some 120+ concerts from the 1970s -80s and lesser later on. Y-tube has made Prog more popular than Ever and I'm so happy to see younger people Loving the best Music and the "Very Best Musicians" there ever was !!!! Bands like Gentle Giant especially have never been more popular and the Top guys like Genesis w/Gabriel, Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, ELP will always be really popular but it's great to see bands like Nektar and Focus getting respect and their do know !! Weather it's based o Classical, conflict/war, Fantasy, Art, Space, folky etc !! ✌🎶🎸🎹🎻🎤🥁🎼

I remain firmly rooted in Prog, something to do with In the Court of the Crimson King being released on my 15th birthday? Still listen to it, and many of your other mentions to this day. Finally, saw ELP twice, and even saw Gentle Giant and Barclay James Harvest as a student. Great days 👍

Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Errata Corrige, Museo Rosenbach, and many, many more else. Premiata were recorded also in English, paraded and marketed in U.S. That's why they are well known worldwide. But, trust me, they are only the point of the iceberg of Italian Prog. And there are the Brazilians too!

Italian prog is a universe unto itself! Many great mentions here. Deserving of attention: Picchio dal Pozzo (almost Zappaesque, quite brilliant). Really, any prog-inclined listener would be enriched by taking a deep dive into the Italian Prog scene. Much treasure lurking there. On an irreverent note: would French prog be called "Frog Prog"?

The Italian prog rock scene was one of the greatest in the 1970s. I add to this list Alphataurus, Formula 3, Le Orme, Laser - Vita sul pianeta and so on …

Great intro/analysis of prog....interesting points at start....I'd say many just don't want to put the work in to listen to music...prog or any band inspired by classical music =long symphonies, riff changes, experimental angles...listening to music is to a point also about how much work you put in to reap the benefits...lots of bands inspired by various forms of prog similarly demand input from the listener to be able to get into it....many modern heavier bands who are great get overlooked by so called reviewers for very similar reasons (e.g. Devin Townsend, Opeth, Tool, Dream Theatre and many other under the radar bands...) Oh been meaning to get that first Renaissance album....been on my wish list since 2019☺️

Great video....although you did mention Transatlantic (which contains Neal Morse) Neal's band "Spock's Beard" is also another fabulous prog band (and all of Neal's solo and NMB prog things). Thanks again....prog on!

I see you have Smallcreep's Day back there, I'm a big fan of that album and it's a very underrated work, Rutherford's finest, if you ask me

My Top 10 Prog bands: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd (sometimes called space rock), Gentle Giant, Tangerine Dream, Nektar, Camel (regretfully the only band I never saw live but enjoyed all the rest) and King Crimson of course. Of the Neo Prog I love: Marillion, Pallas, Arena, Fish, Sky, Glass Hammer, Porcupine Tree, IQ and UK of course. Never was into Peter Hammill & Van der Graaf but a special mention of Rush, Saga, Renaissance, PFM and Uriah Heep (heavy but some Prog). Nice review but there is so much more :-)

This is al all-time Top 5 prog band and this run of records rivals anything anyone ever put out. Your all time Top 5 btw, are King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, ELP, and Gentle Giant. FULL STOP. Van Der Graaf Generator gets to be first man off the bench. Ok enough snobby elitism from me for now LOL.

Thanks a lot. I must admit I don't know Airbag's music well enough to comment. RPWL a little more, but still I'm no expert. Gnidrolog I do like, Hackett of course (I'm going to do a best of the Genesis solo albums, and he'll feature strongly), Camel I love (I mention them in the 'Part 2' video), Trower - Bridge of Sighs and For Earth Below are the ones I return to, but I think he's blues-influenced and not really prog (I kind of feel the same way about Procul Harem, although they were definitely more progressive). Parsons is pleasant, but never really grabbed me (TOMAI is my favourite), Gentle Giant I give a good going over in 'Part 2', and Uriah Heep (the second of third band I ever saw) much more like hard rock (like Deep Purple), with groggy tendencies!

I think Parliament deserve a mention. They had prog elements but are often lazily classed as funk by people who dont pay enough attention. They had concept albums, complex arrangements, crazy solos, folk and classical influences all over the place. Nobody ever mentions them. Its a shame

Love the way you pick an album, but then do the where do you go to next. Think that is brilliant. For Genesis I would have picked Trick of the Tale of Foxtrot only because I think more accessible for people, just me though. Really like the way you did this. What is your take on the second wave prog like Spocks Beard or Porcupine Tree? oh you covered PT LOL

The two albums that I heard at age 15 that blew my whole world wide open and made me want to be a musician is Pink Floyd the Wall, and Genesis Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Love what those albums did for me and my taste in music.

This video just showed up on my KZread feed. Never knew of you before David. Love your style. Prog rock has always been my favorite genre of music. Only 1/2 way through this video and you have mentioned some of my fav albums, notably BJH Live, Phaedra and Ommadawn.

I have my Crime vinyl on display right now too haha. Love to see the Oldfield up there as well.

You covered some great albums . A band that never gets mentioned is the Strawbs , understandable I guess because they were generally viewed as folk rock early on . They do , however , have a couple of prog albums in the mid 70s entitled Hero & Heroine and Ghosts that are terrific . There are others as well such as Camel , Kansas , some albums by Procol Harum are pretty close to prog , same with Moody Blues ( On the Threshold of a Dream ) . It depends on your definition of prog I guess . You mentioned Jethro Tull's Aqualung , which is fabulous , but I would also add Thick as a Brick and A Passion Play which are terrific as well . That about covers it. I was in high school and college from 1970 to 1977, so prog was very important to me! As operations manager of a small college radio station, I had access to all the albums of the day, so I and my cohorts on the air staff played them all. It was a great time to be alive if you were a musician or a music lover. New listeners would do well to give ANY of these albums a spin.

Enjoying the comments almost as much as the top 10! Prog starts here 25:00 and peaks here 30:50, I totally agree! Surprised and pleased to see Barclay James Harvest show up. I had forgotten them since college days. Also - would Al Stewart deserve an also-ran mention? His pop-music turn wasn’t nearly as shameless as Genesis’ !

My favorite Genesis track is Back In NYC. Of course it has to be at 100 decibels or more. Larks Tongue in Aspic Part II for Crimson as well.

The first time I heard Genesis was one afternoon in the first week of January, 1974. KOME FM's Dana Jang, in introducing the song "The Musical Box," seemingly for the first time, proclaimed up front about Genesis that "this band is going to revolutionize rock." I guess the band did have an influence on many subsequently successful bands and artists, and it seems that every now and then one of them comes out and says so. Somewhat fascinating is Tony Banks' remark not long ago that "we were always under the radar," and I'd say I sensed something similar even during their commercial peak.

Very interesting video and great selection indeed. I agree when you say making progressive music requires great musicianship. In my opinion it is the same as listener, to appreciate this genre, it is necessary to be initiated before e.g., like cigars and brandy that aren't valued by a person under 30 years of age🙂

So right about having to listen! Heard Jethro Tull’s Aqualung first time, hated it 🤯. Two weeks later, I bought it and been listening to it ever since,and that was 1971!

Selling England by the Pound is the greatest prog album, greatest album of all time IMO.

Every type of music fills a need but prog as a whole has more structure and melody and paints a picture and story that no matter how many times you listen to it there’s always something different to find and it never gets boring or predictable,example- close to the edge, I have been listening to it since 1972 and it never disappoints.magic,god bless prog!!

Amazing video

Just discovered this. Have to say I agree with almost every choice. Crime of the Century, Ommadawn, Ricochet and Phaedra, Barclay James Harvest Live (saw them 3 times), Selling England and The Lamb Lies Down (my favourite album ever!).

Oh just got into Moody Blues via a Bruce Dickenson interview....I think they have many admirable qualities.... for sure I'd say they are prog....Infact I'm pretty sure they inspired lots of great bands including King Crimson....and Iron maiden🤘🤘🤘....oh he also mentioned Van Der Graf Generator....getting into those guys too...

I really like them. Like most people I got into them via 'Moving Waves' and 'Focus 3', and their two famous singles. I recently bought their big box set, which I've been working my way through.

Very good selection - love to see Barclay James Harvest mentioned, saw them live a couple of times, IMO ‘Mocking Bird’, and , ‘After the Day’ are classics but my favourite BJH tracks are ‘She Said’ and ‘Dark Now My Sky’ -(all available on the BBC Sessions) - just so overlooked as a band. In terms of Big Big Train I would recommend getting the 2021 release of Underfall Yard.
