Great White Sharks at Anacapa Island

On Sunday July 26, 2020 my parents, Steve Patton and Lisa Patton spotted not one, but two great white sharks feeding near Cat Rock off of Anacapa Island. They took their boat, the Baja Midnight out to the Channel Islands for some free diving and spearfishing and ended up capturing iPhone video footage of both incidents. I had the opportunity to go down to the Channel Islands harbor where their boat is docked in order to sit down with my dad Steve and talk with him about the events surrounding the shark encounters that day.

Cool! I love Anacapa but you make me think about when I used to dive off of Alviso and I'd be waiting for my friend to come back from fishing and pick me up. I'd lay on the top of the thickest kelp I could find, right in the middle. From what you are saying here, it wouldn't have helped much if The Man in Gray did come.

I saw two in three days at fish camp. A giant breeched 100 meters while trolling yt. Two days later a 13 14 footer and bull sea lion were having a feed on the head and shoulders of a 250+ black seabass. Thing rammed by 16' bay runner skiff. Rattled my fillings then chased me Like a junkyard dog. Footage is on KZread. I'm spooked of that zone. No shame.lmfao. great vid. Mahalos

I've also heard that the Channel Islands also are a favorite hang out and feeding area for really large Mako sharks (the 'granders' IE: 1000+ pounds); a 10-13 foot Mako almost looks like a Great White and, truth be told, there are very few things a grander Mako can't handle. Apparently they are also quite fond of sea lions and the deep drop off makes it a great place to hunt.

The marine mammal protection act makes sure there's lotsa food; the 'no kill' law in place for great whites makes sure there's going to be more of them...all with the best of intentions, of course--not that I mind, more alpha predators in the wold isn't a bad thing. It's their territory, after all. Truth be told, it's almost like watching dinosaurs.

I know there are many differing opinions on this, and I don't mean to judge anyone, because who am I and what do I know... but, you say "we HAD to pull away" when the sea lion was trying to get onto some part of your boat, right? It's really sad that the shark makes the sea lion suffer like that for so long, i can only imagine how painful that must be, agonizing. And it must've been so sad that it tried to save itself with this human made object and the human pulled away. So sad. Did you have to do that to not intervene for legal reasons? Or did you want the shark to have his meal? Or did you think the sea lion would suffer too much if it had to die naturally with you?

THIS is what makes Southern California worth it to live there. The Channel Islands are what California was BEFORE white man. These Islands are a best kept secret; people can live their entire lives in Ventura and NEVER go there...what!/ OK less people less damage. I live in Northern California nowadays BUT I revisit Ventura and the Islands every year! My HS Principal's family were the caretakers of Santa Cruz Island for over 50 years! for the owners who raised sheep of all things LOL. We took many trips out there, to all the Islands. I LOVE to snorkel in the kelp forests with all the cool fishes. Lastly you people are cool...I wanna meet you. I'll look you up next time I'm down. VERY cool shark story...I bet you have Many good stories about those islands and the California coast. Again, Thanks for neato film!

Would you also save the creatures that the sea lion eats? Or maybe patrol the ocean endlessly and prevent sharks from eating so they starve as well? I believe they were observing prey that was already badly injured anyway, were they supposed to haul it on deck and have a helicopter fly it to a veterinarian or something? You can't magically snap your fingers and turn them all into vegetarians. This applies to dogs and cats too ya know; other creatures must die to provide the nutrients they need to be healthy. Humans need a fair amount of protein too btw, and I think many of us are perhaps a little too detached from reality/nature. P.s. I'm not a psycho, I respect and care for random creatures often, even spiders and snakes and rats, but I also don't cry if a snake eats a rat.

The instructor said noo there are no sharks. Turns out! Yes there are many especially Great Whites and Makos. I have a fear of deep water and Great Whites. I'm deathly afraid. Don't mind seeing sharks but I'd never want to be in the water during that. It's not the sharks fault but it's fears just like snakes and dangerous spiders. Thank gosh I didn't jump in and did more research after that. Turns out Channel Islands and Oxnard is the nursing grounds for greats. Haha...

Sometimes beaches close for an hr or 2 everytime a shark is seen close by and that is sometimes 2 to 3 times a day. There are predations sometimes in 3 ft maybe less of water and the whites are 16 -19 footers.

There's something sick about sitting around for half an hour watching a panicked, injured animal waiting to be devoured. Then deny it access to your boat, insuring it will be eaten. Then once again sit around for another half hour to see it happen to yet another animal. Yeah, it's nature but taking a dump is nature, too, and no one wants to see that. How you can relay this story with a smile on your face is disturbing. Most people have compassion for an injured, doomed animal. You seem to be lacking in that area. I'm glad I don't know you in real life. You better hope karma isn't real, or you'll find yourself helpless and rejected from someone who could have easily saved you.

Death is the best thing that could’ve happened to that sea lion. Thr suffering that animal would have had to endure if it survived the attack with the injuries it had already sustained would be unbearable. What would you do, take it to a vet?

There is one simple truth. If you are in the water ,you are in the water with sharks. Always. The only question is proximity. I live near Cape Cod in Mass. I will not go swimming anywhere up by wellfleet or north of it. Too many large White Sharks for my liking.

Yea I think u might be right and that probably is the reason them 2 sharks were moving pretty quickly in circles. As I was watching I was wondering only due to the speed of them sharks they were moving to fast and it felt different then a white. Whites are fast but its not a norm when they circle prey and whites usually don't spend that much time playing with their food.

What I don’t get is that you said the sea lion was trying to escape onto your step and you didn’t help him? I have seen many people save seals and penguins and sea otters. I would feel terrible to just sit and watch him get eaten up poor guy. 🥲

@Maniac 5000 I totally get that although I have had several sea otters, a penguin, and a seal survive by getting on the boat out of danger. I feel being there at the right time to help. Never touched any of them. It’s like the baby seal on the little glacier all alone with the orcas surrounding it. If I could I would rescue it. I know that’s life and part of how they all survive. When one swims to me for help I can’t say that’s your way of living, sorry. I figure if I can help I will. Maybe that’s just how a female responds compared to a male. I know what you say is true but I just respond differently. Thanks for responding, I appreciate that. Happy ⛵️
