I absolutely love games that no one knows who’s winning but I love it even more when you realize you’re just a few points apart. You guys are great!

Really excited to check this video out. Have been hooked on original Great Western Trail for the last couple months since finding it through your channel. My buddy and I can't get enough.

"Leicester" - made me chuckle! That's my nearest city! I'm actually from Loughborough - try pronouncing that one :D Mildly interesting: spelling it as a child... "Lions Eat Ice Cream Every Saturday, Tigers Eat Rice" :P

DOG! I've only ever played base GWT on BGA, but this looks really interesting if quite a step up in terms of moving parts. Thank you for the playthrough.

Ah shit. The previews/rules overview left me thinking I was fine with just OG 2e. But seeing you actually play has me convinced I was wrong. Well played.

Good playthrough. I am glad to see the difference in play between the original GWT and This one.

I've only played Dune, Terraforming Mars, Anachrony and Eclipse second dawn as I entered the board game scene and GWT it hurt my brain the most learning. But once you learn it's worth it and a great play.

You got the disc rule backwards. White discs goes on black or white and black discs can only go on black bordered spaces. There is however a special case where if only one disc remain and it's white you can place it on a dark bordered space

This is during rules explanations btw. Also sorry to point out but during setup there is a specific order to respect for the 4 bonus cards. They have to be placed in numerical order for wheel, barrel, bell and compass. So you should have had wheel bird, barrel yellow sheep (was correct) bell building upgrade bonus #6 and finally compass with blue sheep #7

Just starting to watch, but looks like you didn't sort the "choose-4-from-10" bonus cards into Wheel < Barrel < Bell < Compass by the card set ID number. Higher set-number cards tend to be "better" and so should cost more gold to acquire.

And when seeding the worker market (and starting hazards), the 12 tiles (for 2p) you pull from bag "A" should be _in addition_ to the 1-of-each (pre-printed on the board). So I think your should have drawn 4 extra.

I've been intrigued with GWT since the base game first came out, but I've played none of them. I tend to avoid games that are 2.5+ hours, multi-player solitaire, limited strategic paths. Knowing that about me would you predict I would enjoy New Zealand if I made that my first foray into Great Western Trails? One thing I won't do is start with the original GWT because the newest one seems much more interesting right from the look of the box. Thanks for the playthrough!

So on the time, this one is going to be long at first, especially at 3-4 players. but all the other categories I think you'd be in the clear. There's not a ton of interaction but at higher player counts more buildings get built which cause a bit of that interaction stuff. Argentina probably has the most interaction though

@@TheBrothersMurph Thanks. I should have mentioned that I do know Maracaibo and, at the time, I had heard GWT and Maracaibo were "related", but I went with the latter because it was visually appealing.

I got this because I can't pass up a game based on my country. Of course I am interested in GWT otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. This will be the first one I play. I think I am starting to grok the rules and hope to play it soon solo, but I can't imagine teaching this to my wife (who also has never played a GWT game). How easy is it to explain the high level concept and just jump into the game? All the details of the rules just won't work to be explained up front!

It's not simple it's a mid-heavy Euro. You could explain the turn structure (move x spaces, do action where you land) and then start playing, but then you'll have a lot of questions as you go.

  • @TheBrothersMurph

agreed with the other comment there will just have to be a certain amount of rules overhead but ultimately the turns are quite snappy and easy to understand so I feel like to start you could just explain general concepts and then go into explaining the neutral buildings and how many of them allow you to discard certain color cards for money etc. then get into more specifics from there.

Oh my Brother's Birth, believe me when I say that I not hypothetically unequivaclaviclely can't not wait for your GWT comparison vid. I will be patiently waiting here, sucking on one Tic-tac at a time as my only source of calories until you pop that vid out from your creation void. So light a fire - you wouldn't want poor Tic-tac boy to whiiiither away out here, now would you?

My friend and I both found GWT 2nd edition to be very fiddly, unclear rules, and not very enjoyable. There are a lot of little fiddly rules to remember and fiddly actions to take, and a bunch of fiddly tokens and chits to deal with. Also, the insert it came with was damn near useless. I got rid of it.
