Day 2 of my Southwest Tour from August 10th - 13th comes from 2 stations on the Riviera Line and South Devon Line being at Exeter St Thomas and Starcross which I visited both for the first time.
Exeter St Thomas
1. A 2 car Class 150/2 departs Platform 1 on a service to Paignton from Exmouth via Exeter St Davids
2. Passing Platform 2 is a 8 car Class 43 HST mostly in FGW livery on a service to London Paddington from Penzance.
3. Another Train passing Platform 2 is another 8 car Class 43 HST this time from Paignton.
4. Passing Platform 1 is a 8 car Class 43 HST slowly coming back up to speed after stopping at Exeter St Davids.
5 & 6. Passing Platform 2 is A 3 car Service formed of a 1 car Class 153 in Visit South Devon Livery and a 2 car Class 143 Pacer in GWR Livery on a service from Paignton to Exeter St Davids. Then this would return back passed Platform 1 lead by the 2 car Class 143 pacer heading back to Paignton.
7. A 5 car Class 221 Voyager on a CrossCountry service from Plymouth to Newcastle.
8. Next is a 2 car Class 150/1 although heading to Exeter St Davids from Plymouth in fact was a empty stock movement.
9. A 1 car Class 153 in Citizens Rail Livery passes platform 1 heading to Paignton from Exeter Central and also at this point I had company close by in the waiting shelter which was a Grandmother and 2 kids which explains the shouting in the background.
10. A 7 car Class 43 HST passes Platform 1 on a CrossCountry service to Paignton from Leeds.
11. To conclude from Exeter St Thomas is a 4 car Class 220 Voyager on a service from Paignton to Manchester Piccadilly.
Starcross
1. A 3 car Class 150/0 departs on a service to Paignton from Exmouth calling next at Dawlish Warren.
2. A 5 car Class 221 voyager passes Platform 2 on a CrossCountry service to Newcastle from Penzance.
3. Just caught this at the last moment was a 5 car Class 800 on a GWR service to Paignton from London Paddington passing Platform 1.
4. A 8 car Class 43 HST with the front Loco being in GWR Green on a service from London Paddington to Penzance.
5. A 5 car Class 221 Voyager passes Platform 1 on a CrossCountry service from Manchester Piccadilly to Newquay.
6. Passing Platform 2 is surprisingly a service formed of a 2 car Class 150/2 from Paignton to Exmouth via Exeter St Davids running non stop here.
7. Passing Platform 1 is a 2 car Class 150/1 on another empty stock run from Exeter St Davids to Paignton.
8. Passing Platform 2 is a 8 Car Class 43 HST with the front Loco and coach 8 in GWR Livery with the rest being in FGW look on a service from Penzance to London Paddington.
9 & 10. Arriving on Platform 2 is the same 3 car service seen earlier at Exeter St Thomas and a 3rd time in this video this time forming a service from Paignton to Exmouth via Exeter St Davids. Which then departs to stop at Exeter St Thomas.
11. To conclude my filming at Starcross and this video is passing Platform 1, a 4 car Class 220 Voyager on a CrossCountry service from Leeds to Plymouth.
Exeter St Thomas first opened on the South Devon Railway in May 1846 although at first just a single line however in 1861 the viaduct the line runs on was widened which resulted in a 2nd platform.
Today it's unstaffed and although it's the only station in Exeter to be Grade II listed which Exeter St Davids next station to the North and Exeter Central first station out of St Davids on the Avocet and West of England Line aren't. However nowadays the original station building has gradually fallen into disrepair.
Starcross opened at the same time as Exeter St Thomas however it was rebuilt in 1906. The station sits next to the River Exe which a ferry is provided from here to Exmouth although operating between Easter and October. The station itself has been unstaffed since 1971, the former station building was demolished in 1981 however the footbridge dates from 1999 replacing the original which dated from 1895.
On Platform 2 there is a waiting shelter however there is no shelter available on Platform 1 leaving it vulnerable to the elements of bad weather.
Like Exeter St Thomas only Exmouth to Paignton trains mostly call here although there are odd occasional services that run non stop through here.
