Great Sodor Engines ~ E20: James Goes Green (NOT MADE FOR KIDS!!!)

DISCLAIMER: This video is not made for kids! It’s for older fans and adults only!
Plot: James and Henry found themselves bickering again over which color is best suited for an engine. However, when the Steamworks ran out of red paint after Kevin accidentally dropped the last of it, James had to be temporarily repainted in green until after Christmas much to his chagrin. Will he learn that being useful is important than the type of livery he wears?
And so, here we are with our final episode of Season 2! Yes, I know it’s too early for Christmas (though you do all remember back when the Christmas-themed episodes of the official show such as the Brenner era were released on DVD around October before their initial broadcast on TV, right? Not every specific holiday-themed episode can be released on a particular date). Moving onto the episode, the main inspiration came from when I first saw the S22 episode ‘An Engine of Many Colors 6 years ago, especially in the second fantasy scene where James imagines himself painted in green. I laughed and called it Fire Engine Payback. When you think about it, this is kind of a inverse of James and Henry arguing over which is the better paint job for an engine via said-story and in Henry Sees Red, Henry gets painted in James’ color. However, I am honestly surprised nobody ever attempted a story where James was repainted in Henry’s color. Yes we have Tickled Pink and a few other fan-stories with blue or black but that’s beside the point. So I wrote this story not just for fun, but to also conclude James and Henry’s arc about colors (which I also used a little inspiration from An Engine of Many Colors as well). The thumbnail itself was a lot fun to make with James (I know I changed his safety valve, but drawing one from an actual L&YR Class 28 is more tedious looking). The scenery with all the snow I tried to make it more whimsical with all the different gradients and shades (I used the inspiration from the Thomas Story Library illustrations which also goes to some of the previous thumbnails).
Fun fact, I had originally written this episode to be a part of S3. However, I decided to push it back for this season to stay consistent with the 10 episodes as planned. Why is writing a fan series not an easy task when it comes to episode limits? Speaking of Season 3, it will take a while for it to slowly start production as there is a lot of thumbnails to do (plus, I will be planning something for the Thomas franchise’s 80th anniversary next year though it’s also gonna take a long time for it to come into fruition). Plus, I need the time to slow down and focus on other things but I’ll still be here for voice lines, occasional posts and other stuff. As a certain lyric would say ‘life is so simple if you have time to spare’. Finally, I like to dedicate this episode to another important person in Thomas’ legacy and history: Margaret Awdry as this year is the 35th anniversary of her passing that month. She is the wife of The Rev. W. Awdry and it was because of her urging her husband (Rev. W. Awdry) to publish The Railway Series to everyone, so without her, we would never have got exposure to the engines of Sodor. Yes, I know it’s still several days away, but it never hurts to give my own blessings now, right? As always, I hope you enjoy it!
And kudos to TrainFanProductions, Johnny Koboyakawa, Jonathan Asiamah (the new voice for Henry) and BlueTraxDak for their splendid character performances!

Well that was something. First Henry gets painted red, and now James gets painted green. I guess the two engines really did have their own experiences of change, so that makes a lot of sense. By the way, great story you've written!

I've always found Henry and James' dynamic rather interesting. Like two friends/brothers who often bicker and can't seem to agree on anything. Another thing, Jon does a damn good job as Henry. His Kevin Frank impression is amazingly spot on!

What a great story this was. James really was being vain and boastful again. The green livery sort of helps him to realise his behaviour towards Henry was wrong. But it was good of him to come to Henry's rescue when he broke down.

Well, James really is a An Engine of Many Colours!😆 While I love the dynamic between Thomas and James, I will say that dynamic between James and Henry is pretty amusing! They keep getting on each other's nerves! Also, Kevin, Kevin, Kevin... A good chap really, if not a little clumsy!😅 The bit where the Troublesome Trucks were singing had me laughing!🤣 Jonathan Asiamah's voice for Henry was quite surprising! It sounds just like Kevin Frank!👍 A great way to end Season 2! Well done to everyone who was involved!👏

Thanks! Since the engines themselves don't turn their heads to see what's behind them (unlike All Engines Go) it makes sense for Henry having not notice James until Spencer blurts it out (yeah I know Thomas' Train had Thomas look back to realize he's left the coaches behind, but this is more subtle and works well within the context of their own universe).

My goodness! Poor James sure looks different in that green livery. Mind you, remember one of the Thomas learning segments? No pun intended. It had a scenario of James painted green. I also used the scenario of Thomas being painted red in the same segment to create my original character for my series. His name is Josh and he is the youngest brother of Thomas. Rest in Peace, Margaret Awdry. You and your husband will be missed. Anyhow, I'm so looking forward to Season 3 of your series. Wouldn't be surprised if you based one episode off of mine of George and the Dump Truck Twins' rivalry, but, in a different way or if either Diesel 10 or Splatter and Dodge appeared in your series since Diesel 10 is your favorite T&F antagonist. As for the Season 2 finale episode you made there, terrific job and keep up the good work.

I didn't even know there was a green James in the learning segments. Well, there is a completely different Pack episode for S3 (but I will be 'hush-hush' for now). As for Diesel 10, he might appear one day in the future (I'll just need to figure a way to incorporate him while he is still my favorite villain. Otherwise, I might do a flashback story based on the events of Magic Railroad, though just a little loosely different).

As if being in pink or yellow and black wasn't bad enough, James has to look like the Grinch for the whole Christmas season! And just what exactly were the freight cars singing? Got the lyrics? 😆 Love the little ref to "Henry Sees Red". Good old Margaret...

Excellent episode once again! It reminded me a lot of both Tickled Pink and Henry Sees Red, and the dynamic between Henry and James really reminded me of their argument in James and the Trouble with Trees. Also, speaking of Henry, Jonathan Asiamah's Kevin Frank impression was surprisingly accurate! Overall, a great way to end Season 2! I look forward to when Season 3 starts!

Indeed he was - even if from the beginning both he and James started that colorful argument in Fire Engine. Then again, they're always at each other's throats being second best to Gordon. It's a shame this dynamic was never shown again since S5!

Well, youre early for Christmas. For me in my state most of the time every year on August I always see Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas stuff already put in stores early. Im dying from laughing at the thumbnail of James' angry face... 😂😡 My mom thinks he has botox because of his 3 wrinkles. Poor James can't catch a break from being repainted into colors that don't make him happy can he? The remaining half of this season seems to have finished rather quickly these past 2 weeks.

Great story (and very funny to my surprise). See you in S3~ Suggestions for other content: * another audio series (maybe one that involves analysis of fan content focusing on one character or group of characters on the show) * an audio analysis of fan series + stories (the true definition of Thomas fan series and stories) * a timeline video of Sodor (from its earliest years to the present) * review videos on other movies and TV shows (besides Thomas stuff) * rewrites/adaptations of either King of The Railway, The Great Discovery, or Journey Beyond Sodor
