We don't do full consultations at our salons, we ask them what they want at the basin or when the hairs been washed! I much prefer to do full consultations like this.

I really do understand that type of culture you are talking about, because I used to work in a couple salons that performed that way. So it's stepping away from that culture that has been widespread it seems like throughout the industry. Even in high end salon and spas. Because it doesn't always result in desirable results for your guests. Which is why I won't fit in at a massive chain, faster paced environment. I don't really like that aspect of our industry. Quantity over quality at that point!

Soooo true! U never learn how to communicate with the clients from school! That's why when u cut and style your friend's hair they end up very happy (u know what they like) but the first time u cut a new client's hair it may turn out OK but after a few appointments u see the client react with clear enthusiasm. That's because u get to know their needs better! Amazing and extremely helpful video !

Im so glad you & Andrew made this video.!!! As a student, asking the right questions is one of my top priorities & this video showed me how important it is to listen to those keys words so I can give not a good haircut but a good experience Thanks :)

Extremely great points made in this video. I'm a new stylist fresh out of school, and I'm really trying to perfect (or get close to it) my client consultations and talking to a client. A client consultation and the way you talk to them is 80% of the experience after all, and while the school taught me that, I felt like it didn't totally give me everything I needed. This is a great tutorial for someone like me to go by and learn from, as well as a lot of your other videos. Thank you very much. ^^

mistyhollowpro You are so correct and congrats for wanting to make your consultation the best it can be! In today's world, it's value that will help you build and retain a client base. Be an exceptional listener and add value to all of your appointments, whether it's another minute at the shampoo bowl giving a great head massage, or showing them tips & tricks that will help them to replicate styles at home - these are all things that will grow your business. Here's another video about the consultation. It's older, but the info is still solid! kzread.info/dash/bejne/Y2F3pqSJesy4mLw.html Good luck, my friend!

I completed cosmetology recently! I don’t feel I have the skills to make the offers/promises you are making in this consultation. Other than practice, is there any advice for professionals new to the industry for consultation? How does a haircut look sensual? I was under the impression it’s all about attitude. I know an exceptional hair service can evoke confidence but I’m missing the connection to words like fun, or sensual? Is it all in the styling?

Stephanie Hunsaker I hope your journey is going well. I’m sure by now (1 year later) you probably have learned that the best way to know what a client means by words such as “fun/sensual/etc” Is to simply seek clarity. “Describe what a sensual look is for you, you can name off some celebrities if that helps.” Most likely the client will name a celebrity or influencer, and you can take that time to look up a few pictures on google, trust me the client will appreciate you going the extra mile to be on the same page with her/him.

To be honest and let’s not lie ok.. women over 50’s all they want is to look younger ! And if they are really cooperating with their own looks, dress up the part/ style their hair, do a bit of make up, keep themselves healthy exercising and a bunch of all other beneficial habits that will bring up their self stem to feel confident! Lot of women lack all that.. age is a # and it’s all in your head! Get therapy !!!
