Yeah the legend of zelda isn't an RPG. It's an action-adventure. It very deliberately has all the action be in real time, only has one character (so it's not really role playing) and doesn't have stuff like levelling up (unless you count getting the white Cape thing or whatever it's called that turns link white and ups his defense). Zelda is closer to a metroidvania than an RPG. That game and metroid and kid icarus coming out all at the same time were all meant to be in the same kinda vein, Nintendo's attempt to expand games from just being arcade replicas into something bigger.

One of the best Christmas's of my life. 1986 me, my brother and sister opened our very own master system. We played Wonder boy and Snail Maze for weeks. Shortly after we got Double Dragon. Needless to say some of the best times of our childhood. Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Alex Kidd, California Games, Astro Warrior, After Burner and Hang on. The only game I ever saw my dad play was Hang on. I remember how impressed we were that he beat the night level. Lol. I have him and my mom to thank for all the amazing memories. Miss ya, dad.

Hey thanks for showcasing Kenseiden! It's a more methodical platformer that may not be for everyone. Some of the platforming segments are frustrating because Hayato (the samurai) gets an insane amount of knockback when hit that you often can't recover from quickly enough if you are near an edge. Things get a lot easier when you obtain more moves for the character, as well as the HP extension and defensive charms. I actually prefer it without the FM sound, surprisingly enough. You're quite right about both Asterix games and Ninja Gaiden on the SMS (I think it plays better than NG1 and 2 on the NES and ties with 3).

As a NES owner in Brazil back in the 90s, I was blown away by Shadow Dancer on the Master System. I just couldn't find a comparable game on my console and that pissed my 12 years old fanboy brain sooooo much.

One nice thing to note in Kenseiden is that the sprites of the character are asymetrical, always left handed whether the character looks to the right or to the left. In 99% of the games of that time, the characters are symetrical, left handed when they look to one side and left handed when they look in the other side

Golvellius, definitely a looker especially in side-on and vertically-scrolling dungeon levels. The original Sonic is superb (I like the others too, but the low-gravity jump mechanics take a bit of getting used to, and the games don't run as smooth as the original which, admittedly, has less going on). I get the impression that Desert Strike was pretty good as well.

I really enjoyed Kenseiden. It was hard but fun. I never heard of the Ottifants, and with scrolling like that, I'd have needed motion sickness pills to play it. That Tectoy Virtua fighter actually looks like it has less animation lag than the Genesis version.

I am so happy that your are covering SMS as it has quite a worldwide fanbase. There are many classics hope you can cover individually. I am still surprised that Phantasy Star hasn't been highlighted. It was the first console RPG that was years ahead of it's time. It was also developed by Reiko Kodama who is one of the original OGs of Sega who contributed to their early dominance.

I decided to give a little commentary on why I wouldn’t have picked the games I didn’t care for to give a little insight into my thinking. Some took it as me crapping on their opinions, but that certainly wasn’t the case. I wouldn’t have done the episode at all had there been no respect.

Deep Duck Trouble is a fantastic game for the Master System! That is one game that every SMS fan should play! Also, while I don't usually tend to agree with much of what RGT85 has to say, I have to admit that his suggestion of Jurassic Park for the system was great one. I happened to play that game as a kid on the Game Gear and was admittedly quite impressed! It's a very solid game and a good looking one too.
