Great Irish Cathedrals, Churches, and Monasteries (With Religious History/Music)

During our two week trip through Ireland, we saw many great cathedrals, churches, and monasteries. Personally, I'm very interested in the religious history and architecture. We visited Christ Church Cathedral (0:00), St. Patrick's Cathedral (4:30), St. Canice's Cathedral (8:59), Cobh Cathedral (12:10), St. Fin Barre's Cathedral (15:04), Killarney Franciscan Church (18:08), St. Mary's Church of Ireland (18:24), St. Mary's Cathedral (18:43), Ross Errilly Friary (18:51), Kylemore Abbey (20:51), Glendalough Monastery (23:23), Daniel O' Connell Memorial Church of the Holy Cross (26:58). I hope you enjoy the religious history and music!

Thank you for this well presented video, however all cathedrals and churches prior to 1533 when Henry the 8th was excommunicated from the Catholic Church were Catholic therefore it would be greatly appreciated if the full history could be communicated. As Irish citizens it is disappointing that visitors who go to the trouble of visiting and documenting our history select only the story perpetuated by the conquerors at the time. It would be lovely to see the full story told one day.

Absolutely beautiful post! Thank you for it. We love Ireland, too: and watch on askance as their Political Class attempts to 'deconstruct' the Nation, so that there are no 'indigenous' Irish people. Your focus on Ireland's Christian heritage is a brilliant counter-argument to the nast 'lefties' like Varadkar.

Most but not all. And there is one that went the other way. The church at the Abbey of Kylemore was originally Church of Ireland when built. The older Church of Ireland churches were indeed Catholic before the establishment of the Church of England, of which the Church of Ireland was part, after King Henry VIII broke with Rome. The newer Church of Ireland churches like St Finbarre’s in Cork, though built on sites of older churches, were never Roman Catholic.

Being Church of Ireland myself and also a member of the Anglican Communion. The episcopal seat of Ireland is Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in Armagh, Northern Ireland, where His Grace The Lord Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland resides. Dublin has an Archbishop but he is not Primate of Ireland. The Anglican faith is Reformed - Protestant - as set out in the 39 Articles of Religion and to which all member churches agree and will be found in the Book of Common Prayer. The Church is Catholic as the Christian church as a whole. This should not be confused with Roman Catholicism. It does not venerate the BVM or any other Saint apart from those on an appointed Saint’s day. The Archbishop of Canterbury for all the troubles facing the Church presently is appointed by the Monarch, having recommendations been made to them.

Whenever I see a cathedral, I think of the thousands of people who lived in squalor and poverty while the Church spent their money on these huge buildings.

It is important to remember that the finest churches and cathedral's in Britain and Ireland were originally Catholic, they were almost five hundred years old when King Henry VIII destroyed the Catholic faith and confiscated these beautiful Catholic buildings.

The tour guide for the monastery with St. Kevin is ill informed or likes revisionist history. IHS is a Latin acronym standing for Iesum, Hominem Salvatorem, which translates as Jesus, Savior of Mankind. The devotion to the Holy Name, as it is called, was popularized by the Jesuits. It makes me think his other facts are not correct, either, as that's a basic fact.

The misrepresentation of IHS as I have suffered is one I heard as a joke. But while it is not the original or most accurate representation, it is not completely inapt.

Catholic Cathedrals. Gothic is a false term.

It's an old post but I must say that gothic refers to the architecture style. Catholic churches have used numerous differant styles through the ages but that one is gothic.

  • @theresaortego2674

Yes, Gothic is one of many forms of Catholic church architecture. There's also Baroque, Romanesque, etc. In the late 18th century, corresponding to the Oxford Movement, a French heretic went over to Great Britain and built many new churches in the Gothic style. The Gothic style of churches comes from France during the time of Charlemagne, I believe.

Gothic is an architectural style used pre-reformation when all churches were Catholic. It is also a feature of some newer churches built by the Church of Ireland.
