  • @AndrewTrice

    Thanks! I'm digging it too! I will say that the neck is a little chunkier at the headstock/nut than I would normally prefer b/c its a full classical guitar nut size (~52 mm) and has a truss rod. I was afraid to go any thinner at the nut out of fear of carving into the truss rod channel, and that volute probably doesn't help with the chunkiness. That said, it's strong, I'm not the least bit afraid that the neck is weak, it looks good, and it still plays great.

  • @BBQ1953

    You built a beautiful guitar and unlike some of the guitar builders (though not all) in this challenge, you have some strong chops. I’m sitting here looking at my Córdoba C7-CE, thinking to myself that you’ve probably built the heaviest nylon string guitar in the world?

  • @AndrewTrice

    @AndrewTrice

    3 жыл бұрын

    thanks, and hah! it's not *that* heavy. It feels like any other electric guitar, just with a wider, classical sized neck. I do wish I had made the chambers even bigger, but that is more for resonance than weight reduction. It's not uncomfortable at all & doesn't feel any heavier than my Strat (and you have to turn it up *really* loud to have any feedback issues). Now, if i hadn't chambered the body, then yes, it would be the heaviest nylon string guitar in the world.

    Thanks for the tip! I did almost exactly that, but I think the CA glue I had was too thin, and it went *everywhere*. I used "super thin" viscosity glue, and was halfway done when I realized it had wicked completely through the fret slots and was accumulating on the opposite side of the neck. Was a real mess, and took quite a bit of acetone and and sanding to get it cleaned up.

    Inspiring Andy. I have enough woods to make two flamenci guitars & 3 electric. But your idea makes me want to make a slimline semiacoustic. Im guessing yoy are a fan of Paco de Lucia. I have a vudeo of him on my channel.

  • @AndrewTrice

    @AndrewTrice

    Thank you! Yep, I’ve always loved both classical and flamenco guitar sounds, and really wanted this kind of guitar. If you do make something similar, the one thing I would change for next time is bigger chambers in the body, and maybe reduce that solid strip in the center to almost nothing. I love the sound, but wish it had a bit more low end resonance. Making it more hollow would probably give that extra bit of resonance

  • @fusion-music

    @@AndrewTrice Totally agree Andrew. I was thinking standard flamenco bracing and cedar/spruce top, but with the ideas of electric guitar design too. And possibly a contoured top for comfort. Thin bodies always lack something, but there are advantages too. And I like variety of tones in guitars. But I'm also considering steel strung versions with necks that have the flamenco feel. I struggle now with Strat necks. Thanks for the heads up.

  • @AndrewTrice

    @AndrewTrice

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@fusion-music I've considered putting some "Silk and Steel" strings on this guitar, and it would give be almost exactly what you're describing. You could switch out the strings based on what you want the guitar to sound like. As long as the bracing is strong enough to support the silk & steel strings, then I think it'll work. I *think* the silk & steel strings are higher tension than traditional nylon strings, but much lower than a fully steel string guitar.

    Great build and guitar.... You skipped over install of electronics -- can you provide more details on piezo, preamp and how you handled this?

  • @AndrewTrice

    @AndrewTrice

    3 жыл бұрын

    It has a generic under-saddle piezo that I hooked up with a Schatten Micro Pre preamp. I only wired it up with a volume pot, but if I were to do it again, I'd take the extra 15 mins and add a tone pot too. Details here: www.schattendesign.com/PDF/MicroPre.pdf. It does impedance matching to match the piezo output to a "normal" electric guitar signal.

  • @AndrewTrice

    @AndrewTrice

    3 жыл бұрын

    The pickup is one of those generic/inexpensive under saddle pickups that I got from the local guitar store for about $5... nothing fancy. Then I have a Schatten MicroPre active preamp that makes a massive difference in tone/output. If I were to do it again, I would add a tone knob in addition to volume, and I would also make the chambers significantly larger to get more low end resonance. While it sounds great, it is a bit brighter than I normally like, and I compensate by lowering treble on the amp. Here’s the preamp I am using: Schatten Micro-Pre Guitar/Instrument Piezo Buffer Preamp, Single Channel reverb.com/item/4129284-schatten-micro-pre-guitar-instrument-piezo-buffer-preamp-single-channel?

    Yep, it has classical dimensions. 650mm scale length, neck width is 52mm at the nut, and has a standard classical bridge. The neck is a bit on the chunky side b/c of the 52mm width, so keep that in mind - you may want to adjust to your tastes. I don't remember the blank dimensions, but it was pretty big b/c I cut the headstock slope out of the same multi-laminate blank (no scarf joint). You can kind of get a sense of the thickness by looking at the 2nd picture in this post: instagram.com/p/B_On55PBOdW/. I glued on "ears" to get the full headstock width.
