In my world I simply made a continent that was basically reptile themed. The major powers were a dragonborn empire and a yuan-ti empire with some advanced lizardfolk cities here and there. And on that continent the dinosaurs were simply the local wildlife. So instead of packs of wolves there were packs of velociraptors.

Lovely video, and one I was pleased to see! I have been building an AD&D 2E world over the last few months and this video was a nice relevant surprise. It is a world populated by dinosaurs, psionic Saurial folk based on the parasaurolophus alongside other reptilian races like Lizard Men, as well as the descendants of human refugees who came to the planet a millenia ago on their arcane (coughspelljammercough) airships. So (as always) it was nice to sit down and hear your thoughts. You always manage to reflect my own back at me in a much more comprehensive way, which helps me to make headway when I hit a block. Thanks for the topic!

Glad to be the mirror! 2nd Edition - I didn't think anyone played that anymore, good grief, that would bring back memories lol. Your world sounds interesting. As I mentioned though, you'll need more than dinosaurs and lizardfolk - in my opinion. But you've got it in the form of a different human species that grew out of the original colonists etc. Let us know how it goes!

Ever since I discovered the 2013 re-print (three years after the fact) it has been my go-to D&D edition again. I like 5E a lot for its simplicity and cleanliness but I feel like magic is much too proliferated. Almost everyone has it. 2E has nice separations between classes as far as magical abilities go - only giving healing to priests, spellcasting to spellcasters, etc. Plus all the classic material (like Dragonlance or classic Dark Sun, Spelljammer, et al) that can be played without having to go through all the work of converting rules. I will be sure to keep you updated. ;-)

Additional sources of inspiration: There was a 'Lost World' TV series loosely based on the Conan Doyle story. Also the British series 'Primeval' which had dinosaurs and creatures from other prehistoric periods arriving in the model world through space/time anomalies. They got around the effectiveness of modern weapons with a need to return the creatures to their own time so as to avoid changing history.

I like to use dinosaurs on isolated islands, or hidden valleys un reachable from the outside. Although, I have not yet considered a mad scientist unleashing them upon the world. That's something to think about for some upcoming games

Something I’ve been toying with is a fantasy type setting where dinosaurs are just another common type of animal, so there’d be a lot of diversity of reptilian and bird like animals, with relatively few mammals. In a standard dungeons and dragons type fantasy setting, there’s a bit of a strange dichotomy between normal things like deer and wolves, and magical fantastical animals that make the world feel like you’re exploring, and those two don’t always mesh super well. It sort of makes you wonder why there are regular wolves when there are also dire wolves filling the same niche, and why average villagers seem to have no cultural or ecological relationship to these magical animals. I think using dinosaurs could be a fun solution to this, because they’re animals and it’s clear how they live in an ecosystem with a real sense of place like having deer and cows would, but they’re also impressive, fantastic, and potentially dangerous just like an owl bear or a dire wolf.

I loved this, very helping in the atmosphere, goals, and fun that should be considered in the setting. I can't help but thinking there's more to it, so these are ideas I was storming while watching the video. You spoke of an enemy and focused heavily on aliens and antlantians, but I was waiting for you to say elementals. Other worldly elementals who are capable of influencing dinosaurs (maybe by simply making their climate uncomfortable), who seek a sort of destruction in the natural world. Very intelligent beings in more human-like states who may be revered as gods to the other local homosapiens. My mind also went to troglodytes, the first sentient creatures driven to madness. I can only wonder what they would be like in a session as the main villains with more intelligence and the same savagery. Perhaps they live underground already in savage cities. I very biasly play medieval roleplaying, so your mentioning of the modern setting offset me. You could have a medieval world that tries to grow as the dinosaurs still roam, with their cultures more crude and living in the mountains to fend off from most of the dinosaurs. I believe Aztec civilization would be near what I'm talking about, or something along the lines of a more threatening setting based of the Monster Hunter series. The last thing that I though of from this video was a strange 3rd party class for Pathfinder I found. The description alone gives an idea for a villain. www.d20pfsrd.com/classes/3rd-party-prestige-classes/bastion-press/dinosaur-cultist It would be really neat to see more videos on setting in the future.

If anyone is looking at a game that includes dinosaurs, Palladium has their Rifts title. It has the advantage of being something you could spend time with, then travel to a different area and you're in magical kingdoms or bandit infested wastes.

You could have a region where all the other creatures stay out of it. Because its ruled by a dire T-rex with resistances to all elements and flesh like stone. It has intellect on par with a dragon. Maybe there is a story about how a red dragon tried to make a lair in this place and his bones are in the middle of the valley as a message to and would be usurpers.

Hi, I'd like to see an episode about how to deal with a PC dying, and how to replace him/her with a good balance between being punitive and allowing the player to feel good playing a new character, I've seen the episode about introducing a new character in an adventure, and it gave me some ideas already, but I would like your tips and tricks about dealing with a dying PC. Keep on the great work.

I am writing a campaign where players are Martians and their goal is to save dinosaurs from extinction. Except dinosaurs, they will have to fight with things that came to the Earth from Mars - radioactive creatures, revolted AIs and spiders.

  • @tyrongkojy

I always figured, in this world of dragons, interdimentional (technically and literally) portals, and just plain old magic, why would dinos necessarily go extinct? And assuming they did but were rediscovered in some out of the way place, there's NO way someone's not going to breed these things like horses and spread them around. So yeah, in my stuff dinos are akin to any other animal. Some places have wolves. Some lions. Some drakes. Some velociraptors. Some have a mix. Sometimes there's wild cattle, sometimes triceratops.

"Zombie Dinosaurs" I do have a setting with zombies and dinosaurs I made, though there aren't zombie dinosaurs unfortunately. Basically there's a war between technology worshipers and necromancers, with some medieval-fantasy themed factions (who've domesticated dinosaurs) caught in the middle.

How to be a Great Game Master I haven't quite started the campaign just yet (still gathering players and such). I made the setting for a computer game that I'm building with RPG Maker, but I like the setting enough that I wanted to try converting it into a pathfinder setting and running a campaign in it. The setting's a bit like a less dark 40K, I'll describe it in more detail here: The sun was gobbled up by a sentient black hold Cthulhu monster called Apollyon, but before it could humanity built a super AI deity known as Metatron. Metatron invented FTL travel and evacuated the human race. They formed a technologically advanced republic known as Zion with Metatron as the deity of their state religion. They also discovered magic and aliens (who are usually feudalistic and most of them worship aspects of nature and what have you). Unfortunately, some humans became disgruntled with Zionite society for various reasons so they started practicing necromancy and demon worship and rebelled. They eventually ceded half of Zion and formed The Enigma, a brutal psuedo-communist dictatorship. The two have been in conflict for centuries, and the aliens keep getting dragged in.

I think lots of people overestimating and underestimating dinosaurs at the same time...Because,if you really think about it,dinosaurs in a modern city? It's not that big of a threat, really.Yes,there would be an initial shock, because, lets face it,it's a friggin' dinosaur!, in reality, what is it? Just a big animal, really.I think even police have some big enough guns.Or you can get one somewhere.Yes,it could eat 2-3 people (if it is a meat-eater),and cause lot of other death and destruction, but nothing catastrophic. On the other hand,if you are somewhere far away, and there are dinosaurs, you can have the best gun available to you...if you don't have ammunition.Or you can have a truckload of ammunition...but your truck ran out of fuel. The thing is,you have limited resources. And there are hungry carnivores around.Sooner or later, you will run out of stuff. Then, you will have a problem. Then again,it's just another "survive in the wild" type of thing... A completely different type of question:Could something like Transformers be a setting..? In sci-fi,yes,but in fantasy..? Maybe some kind of sentient golem/construct? Maybe combining dinosaur and transformers...? (Beast Wars came to my mind recently...) Just think of it..."oh,it's just a raptor...-Bigclaw...Transform! - Oh sh**

A dinosaur with spells is really just a Lizardman shaman? Or a dragonkind mage? I think the thing about dinosaurs is what makes them special is that they are just big, scary beasts. Adding things to them either reduces them to cattle, or makes them a fantasy creature. I could be wrong.

  • @TheTechnatron

I feel that Lizardman and Dradonkind are too humanoid. And with keeping dinosaurs more beast-like is a good way to go. Have them break into a potion shop and eat all that is in there, or have a group of them trapped with a enchanter testing all type of stuff on them. Big Shocker Lizards to Godzilla never a bad way to go.
