Wet markets are a great place to find good food at great prices in Penang. Today we went to 2 pasar in Penang, Taman Free School and Batu Lanchang. The former is opened in the mornings, while the latter usually gets busy around lunchtime.
People usually would do their marketing and then stop for a quick breakfast or lunch before going home so many of these hawkers have been open for many years. The good thing is many recipes have remained the same and serve the same good food from decades ago.
We had char koay teow, wan than mee, ban chang kuih and even packed some Thai style economy rice dishes home for lunch, at these two locations!

Thank you for your video log. Down memory lane for me. Was brought up in Trengganu Road in the early 1960's. Vaguely remembered that hawker centre as Caunter Hall with its first low-rise flats in Penang. Si chan lau (pardon my hokkien) or the 4 storey flats as they were called at that time. Will visit the wet market and hawker stalls when back to Penang on holidays again.

Oooo, thanks for introducing the stall 88 thai food Wasnt aware of it until now. Next time, you may want to check out Tony ABC stall which is located on the next row from the famous nasi kandar. Their peanut butter ice cream is home made.

Oooh must go back again soon. After Cecil St market, I feel the food at Batu Lanchang market is quite good. A lot of variety and good stuff to be found!

It is simple economics, supply and demand. You can charge anything you want, the market will determine the real value.
