Great Eastern Main Line, 30 Years of Electric Intercity Services with Class 86, 90 and now the 745s

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Great Eastern Main Line. 30 Years of Electric Intercity Services with have been operated with Class 86s, Class 90s and now the Class 745s EMUs.
Using both still images and video clips I take a look back at over 30 years of electric intercity services between London and Norwich.
In May 1987 the project to electrify the entire length of Great Eastern Main Line was finally completed and electric services could now operate between London and Norwich. During the British Rail era London Liverpool Street to Norwich services were operated by Class 86 locomotives and Mark 2 coaches and used the InterCity branding.
In the early 1990s push-pull operation was introduced using driving brake stand open DBSO coaches displaced from from the ScotRail Glasgow to Edinburgh services after the introduction of the Class 158 DMUs.
As part of the privatisation of BR in 1997 the London-Norwich route became part of the Anglia Railways franchise. The franchise was awarded to GB Railways who introduced a new turquoise and white livery to the rolling stock.
In 2004 the franchise was awarded to National Express East Anglia who initially renamed the franchise as ONE and rebranded the stock with a new livery.
The new franchise owners also began to introduce Class 90 to the route replacing the ageing Class 86s as well as refurbished Mark 3 coaches and DVT displaced from the WCML after the introduction of the Pendolinos.
In 2004 Stoke tunnel just to the south of Ipswich station was closed to enable track bed to be lowered to accommodate the taller Hi-Cube 2.9m high containers carried on intermodal trains from Felixstowe docks.
During the closure a small number of Norwich to London services were diverted via Ely and Cambridge with the electric loco and stock being dragged by a Class 47 locomotive.
A few Class 86s were temporarily retained on the route with the final Class 86 Anglia passenger working between Norwich and London occurring on the 17th September 2005.
In February 2008 the ONE branding was dropped and franchised became National Express East Anglia with yet more liveries applied to the rolling stock.
In August 2016, it was announced that Abellio had been awarded the Greater Anglia franchise. As part of its bit Abellio had agreed to replace the entire fleet with over 1000 new carriages. This included 20 Class 745 electric multiple units which would replace the Class 90s on the Norwich to Liverpool Street services.

5:43 I always loved how you could hear the traction motors of the class 86's and class 90's whining as they accelerated upwards and out of the station, you could always hear the 90s powering out of Ipswich perfectly when stood at the Norwich end of platform 3.

0:52. The Class 86 + Mk2 stock, also had a Mk1 buffet car. On official duty, I used to have to cabride the Class 86, 90 and DBSO. But I never rode in a DVT.

Excellent contents and spot selection as always. I didn't know I missed those 86s til I saw this.

@@LinesideSouthEast I was raised riding trains on the GEML. Born in 2001 I only just remember the 86s and class 312 slam doors before retirement. Class 321s always hold a soft spot in my heart though!

I worked the Caledonian Sleepers with 86x,87s,90s&47s. The 90s should've been kept on the Sleepers.

Proper intercity services should be loco hauled. The FLIRT units aren't bad by modern unit standards (that is to say not brilliant) but they look and feel like cheap plastic toys compared to the mk3 and mk2 sets that went before. I'm glad at least the 90s live on with freight working and theres a handful of 86s that are preserved at least. I still think a properly refurbished mk3 set would have been the best option for the Norwich-London services though.

What? No video of a 745 being towed by a class 37?! (lol) Great video; pity the old 86's have been "stored" by Freightliner now - even though they're not the same physical locos Anglia used. The 90's however are pulling their weight for Freightliner although it's odd they're (mostly) still in Greater Anglia livery. No tangerine orange for them I guess. And - a bit of a sore subject for me - the class 755 regional Flirts; aka the shorter bi-modal 745's. Odd that they're bi-modal on regional lines never likely ever to be electrified - probably because the 4-car 755's are used for backup GEML use whilst the rest of us are left with 3 car 755's with basically the same number of seats as the old class 156's they replaced! It would, of course, be helpful if the 745/755 seats were as comfortable as the previous units...

Many thanks. The 745s always seem to behave themselves when ever I get to film them. Freightliner still have some Class 90s in the old triple grey livery from the 1990s so I doubt they be in any rush to repaint the ex Anglia ones!

The 755s work Norwich to Stansted Airport via Cambridge service, which has a not insignificant part of it's route electrified. I believe theres was also talks of bringing back a direct Lowestoft-Liverpool Street service too.

Thanks for a great video! Quick question - prior to electrification, what traction & rolling stock operated express passenger services? I'm guessing Class 47s and the same Mk 2D/E/Fs, but my ailing memory can't help!
